Docs-only: docs/design/system-traces-expansion.md (competitor gap analysis, Android/iOS parity port plan for system traces, section 15 domain trackers).

The authoritative as-built status is section 14.5 / 15.5 / 15.6 of the doc itself (verified against main). The earlier long status summary that lived in this description was removed because it duplicated those sections and had drifted from main.

All review threads were re-checked against current main and resolved with a fix or evidence. Open owner decisions are listed in section 15.5.

Design review — system traces expansion

Design-only PR (docs/design/system-traces-expansion.md at 0c75d6d). Reviewed against the current samplers (packages/browser/src/system-metrics.ts, packages/node/src/system-metrics.ts, packages/capture/src/system-traces-provider.ts), the onLine-first connection mapper, capture-provider lifecycle, @bugsee/performance (already owns longtask + web-vitals, not LoAF), environment envelopes, and docs/research/capture-apis/SYNTHESIS.md. Also probed process.constrainedMemory() on this Linux Node 22.14 host.

No P0. Three P1s would make ST1/ST4/ST5 ship the wrong wire or leave a standing rAF/GC listener running. Several P2s are the same class of failure this SDK already hit with orientation/connection: a browser-shaped value the viewer cannot render, or a quantity that is not the Android name it is given.

Overall risk: Medium

(No production code yet; the document is the spec for ST0–ST8.)

Merge recommendation: Request changes

Fix the contradictions below before this is treated as binding. The measurement-and-gate philosophy is otherwise sound.

Most important to fix

  1. Stop calling Node ram_js_heap_* an alias of process_memory_heap_* — total/free are different quantities.
  2. Keep navigator.onLine in the connection trace; connection.change is not a substitute.
  3. Give standing sources (rAF, GC observer, PressureObserver, battery/connection events) a start/stop seam. sample() cannot do it, and launch always constructs the sampler.

Positive

Runtime gating (“omit rather than synthesize”) matches shipped ELU / event_loop_lag practice. Deno PerformanceObserver('gc') blindness is a real correction of SYNTHESIS T2 (which listed Deno without measuring). Bun heap_size_limit is correctly rejected as a ceiling. Privacy non-goals and “nothing in @bugsee/core” are right. §8 is honest that probes were standalone scripts on macOS only.

Design re-review — system traces expansion

Re-review of docs/design/system-traces-expansion.md at b202982 (prior review was 0c75d6d). Design-only; no production code. Checked against the as-built samplers (packages/browser/src/system-metrics.ts, packages/node/src/system-metrics.ts, packages/node/src/guarded-system-metrics.ts), @bugsee/bun/@bugsee/deno re-export of the node composition, system-traces-provider.ts (sample()-only), environment envelopes, and docs/research/capture-apis/SYNTHESIS.md.

All eight prior findings are addressed: heap alias vs committed heapTotal, onLine-first connection, {start, stop, sample} lifecycle as ST0, cpu_pressure not thermal_state, disk_mem_* as integer MB on dataDir's volume, app_state mapped (not raw visibilityState) plus dark_mode_changed, Bun heap-stats bound cited as SYNTHESIS 69 ms, and constrainedMemory scheduled with the Linux 2^64 sentinel.

What remains is the same class of bug this repo already shipped with ELU: the call exists and returns a plausible number on Bun/Deno, so a typeof / sentinel check is not a runtime gate — and ST1 lands in @bugsee/node, which bun/deno reuse.

Overall risk: Medium

(No production code yet; the document is still the spec for ST0–ST8.)

Merge recommendation: Request changes

Name runtime flags for the ST1 APIs that exist-and-lie on Bun, and pin the remaining wire shapes (displays, charging, main_thread_lag_ms visibility) before this is treated as binding.

Most important to fix

  1. Do not implement ram_system_available / process_memory_limit / v8.getHeapStatistics as typeof process.availableMemory === 'function' (or a numeric sentinel) inside @bugsee/node. Bun and Deno both answer; bun/deno re-export that sampler. Follow measuresEventLoopDelay / measuresGc.
  2. Do not name browser screen.width/height displays — that quantity already lives in environment.hardware, and Android displays is not two numbers.
  3. Gate main_thread_lag_ms on visibility the same way as fps; specify the charging target shape before ST0.

Residual (not re-filed)

  • Q4 is still "Not checked": node/browser env builders do not read AWS_REGION / VERCEL / FLY_REGION. hardware.cpu_count and hardware.screen_{width,height} / pixel_ratio already exist.
  • Q1: @bugsee/performance already owns longtask + web-vitals; it does not own LoAF.
  • disk_mem_* conversion should go through existing bytesToMegabytes (binary MiB, 1024², truncated) — not / 1e6.
  • ST0 should also move today's constructor-side monitorEventLoopDelay().enable() and getBattery() into start(); they already violate the new factory rule.

Positive

The follow-up commit actually engaged the findings rather than papering them. Runtime gating, omit-rather-than-synthesize, cpu_pressure vs thermal, onLine-first, and the lifecycle seam as a required ST0 item are the right architecture. §8 is honest about macOS-only standalone probes.

Design re-review — system traces expansion

Re-review of docs/design/system-traces-expansion.md at 7455447 (prior b202982). Design-only; no production code. Checked against the as-built samplers (packages/browser/src/system-metrics.ts, packages/node/src/system-metrics.ts, packages/node/src/guarded-system-metrics.ts), composition roots (packages/{node,browser,bun,deno,webview}/src/launch.ts), system-traces-provider.ts (sample()-only, sync #emit), bytesToMegabytes, and env builders.

The second-round P2s are addressed: browser screen_size (not displays), main_thread_lag_ms visibility-gated, charging left as the shipped boolean until Q5, and the ST1 APIs now have named flags. The remaining P1 is that those flags are specified on the wrong seam, which is the same failure the names were meant to prevent.

Overall risk: Medium

(No production code yet; the document is still the spec for ST0–ST8.)

Merge recommendation: Request changes

Put the ST1 gates on createGuardedSystemMetricsSampler the way measuresEventLoopDelay already works, before this is treated as binding.

Most important to fix

  1. Pass measures* as GuardedSystemMetricsDeps into createGuardedSystemMetricsSampler({…}) (deno/src/launch.ts:29), and have them inject omitted readers. They are not launch options; captureLocalVariables: false after ...options (bun/src/launch.ts:32) does not reach the sampler.
  2. Name a runtime flag for handles_active / requests_active (always 0 on Bun/Deno).
  3. Pin disk_mem_* to bytesToMegabytes and omit when effectiveDataDir is undefined.

Residual (not re-filed)

  • Q4 is still "Not checked": node/browser env builders do not read AWS_REGION / VERCEL / FLY_REGION. hardware.cpu_count and hardware.screen_{width,height} / pixel_ratio already exist.
  • Q1: @bugsee/performance already owns longtask + web-vitals; it does not own LoAF (long-animation-frame is research-only in docs/research/capture-apis/browser.md).

Positive

The follow-up actually moved wire names (screen_size, cpu_pressure) instead of papering over them, and the charging recommendation is the conservative one (do not break 0.1.0-beta.3). Runtime gating and omit-rather-than-synthesize remain the right architecture.

Design re-review — system traces expansion

Re-review of docs/design/system-traces-expansion.md at 71a4025 (prior 7455447). Design-only; no production code. Checked against the as-built samplers (packages/node/src/system-metrics.ts, packages/node/src/guarded-system-metrics.ts, packages/browser/src/system-metrics.ts), composition roots (packages/{node,browser,bun,deno,webview,electron}/src/launch*.ts), system-traces-provider.ts (sync #emit inside onStart, no per-sample try/catch), capture-coordinator.ts (a throwing provider.start aborts the rest of capture start), and @bugsee/node engines: >=18.

The third-round commit lands the previous P1 and most P2s on the right seam: measures* are GuardedSystemMetricsDeps with omitted readers, measuresActiveResources is named, disk_mem_* uses bytesToMegabytes and omits without effectiveDataDir, WebView is a third root, factory-time getBattery() / node histogram.enable() are in ST0, and main_thread_lag_ms is a standing source. Q4 and LoAF are no longer residual.

What remains is the same bun/deno injection path the last P1 was about. ST0’s new “wrap a bare function as start/stop no-ops” rule, plus citing only system-metrics.ts:62-63 for enable(), still does not describe the production Bun/Deno sampler.

Overall risk: Medium

(No production code yet; the document is still the spec for ST0–ST8.)

Merge recommendation: Request changes

Pin ST0 so Bun/Deno start() actually runs (and enable() actually moves), before this is treated as binding.

Most important to fix

  1. Do not wrap bun/deno’s injected default as a test stub. Factories must return {start, stop, sample}; wrap only typeof === 'function' test injectors. Move histogram.enable() in guarded-system-metrics.ts:54-56, not only system-metrics.ts:62-63.
  2. Presence-check APIs that are missing on the Node 18 floor (availableMemory); isolate throwing readers so they cannot abort captureCoordinator.start() or become an uncaught setInterval exception.

Prior findings at 71a4025

  • P1 measures* on the guarded factory — fully_addressed
  • P2 measuresActiveResources — fully_addressed
  • P2 disk_mem_* units/path — fully_addressed
  • P2 ST0 existing factory work + WebView — partially_addressed (WebView / node enable() / getBattery() / function adapter are in; bun/deno path still wrong)
  • P2 main_thread_lag_ms standing source — fully_addressed

Positive

This round actually moved the flags onto createGuardedSystemMetricsSampler({…}) with omitted readers, named the fifth flag, pinned bytesToMegabytes, and listed WebView + the MessageChannel ping. Runtime gating and omit-rather-than-synthesize remain the right architecture.

Design re-review — system traces expansion

Re-review of docs/design/system-traces-expansion.md at 17323f5 (prior 71a4025). Design-only; no production code. Checked against the as-built samplers (packages/node/src/system-metrics.ts, packages/node/src/guarded-system-metrics.ts, packages/browser/src/system-metrics.ts), composition roots (packages/{node,browser,bun,deno,webview,electron}/src/launch*.ts), system-traces-provider.ts (sync #emit, no per-sample try/catch), capture-coordinator.ts (throwing provider.start aborts the rest of capture start), bytesToMegabytes (0-on-NaN/≤0), and @bugsee/node engines: ≥18. Re-probed this Linux Node 22.14 host: constrainedMemory() is still the ~2^64 sentinel.

The fourth-round commit lands the previous P1 and P2 on the right seams: factories return {start, stop, sample}; wrap only typeof === 'function' test injectors; both histogram.enable() sites (node system-metrics.ts:62-63 and guarded-system-metrics.ts:54-56); presence feature-detect ≠ honesty typeof; per-reader try/catch so a missing Node 18 API cannot abort captureCoordinator.start() or become an uncaught setInterval exception.

What remains is the same class of lie this repo already shipped with Deno event_loop_lag_*: a standing source that keeps running in a regime where the number is not the quantity it is named.

Overall risk: Medium

(No production code yet; the document is still the spec for ST0–ST8.)

Merge recommendation: Request changes

Pin ST4 lag so a hidden-tab completion cannot become the next visible sample, and pin ST6 so Electron cannot replace the node sampler, before this is treated as binding.

Most important to fix

  1. Treat the main_thread_lag_ms ping like fps: while hidden, abort in-flight, clear lastDelta, do not re-arm. sample() omit-when-hidden is not enough if the last completed delta was a throttle.
  2. ST6 must wrap the node LifecycleSampler and concatenate Electron samples at launchMain. Replacing systemMetricsSampler the way bun/deno do, with an Electron-only factory, drops shipped RSS/CPU/lag.

Prior findings at 17323f5

  • P1 ST0 wrap-functions-as-no-op + bun/deno enable() site — fully_addressed
  • P2 Node 18 presence vs honesty + sample() throw aborting capture start — fully_addressed

Residual (not re-filed)

  • §4 / §8 still say availableMemory “Node ≥22 only”; ST1 says ≥20.13 feature-detected (docs/research/capture-apis/node.md:142). Feature-detect is the actual gate; reconcile the version line so ST1 does not hardcode major ≥ 22.

Positive

This round actually split presence from honesty and stopped treating bun/deno’s injected factory as a test stub. Runtime gating and omit-rather-than-synthesize remain the right architecture.

Design re-review — system traces expansion

Re-review of docs/design/system-traces-expansion.md at 929fd62 (prior 17323f5). Design-only; no production code. Checked against the as-built samplers (packages/node/src/system-metrics.ts, packages/node/src/guarded-system-metrics.ts, packages/browser/src/system-metrics.ts), composition roots (packages/{node,browser,webview}/src/launch.ts, packages/electron/src/launch-main.ts), system-traces-provider.ts (poll-only #emit into traces.system), system-events-provider.ts (events.system, separate option), capture-coordinator.ts (unique provider names; option gate is startProvider, not addProvider), and createNodeSystemEventsSource / createBrowserSystemEventsSource (no extra-source seam).

The fifth-round commit lands both remaining P2s from 17323f5: lag now aborts / clears lastDelta / does not re-arm while hidden and omits until a visible-window ping completes; ST6 wraps the node sampler instead of replacing it, and availableMemory is feature-detected ≥20.13 rather than major ≥ 22.

What remains is the same class of seam mistake this PR already hit with bun/deno wrapping: who calls start(), and which provider the new signals actually enter.

Overall risk: Medium

(No production code yet; the document is still the spec for ST0–ST8.)

Merge recommendation: Request changes

Pin ST0 so LifecycleSampler.start() is owned by the traces provider (not launch.ts:866), and pin ST4/ST6 so events go through events.system, before this is treated as binding.

Most important to fix

  1. Do not call sampler.start() at the three addCaptureProvider sites. SystemTracesProvider.onStart/onStop must invoke it, after the CaptureSystemTraces gate.
  2. dark_mode_changed / freeze / resume belong on createBrowserSystemEventsSource, not the traces sampler — that sampler cannot emit events.system.
  3. ST6 wrap must forward start()/stop(), isolate Electron throws, and wrap the events source (a second events.system provider is rejected by name).

Prior findings at 929fd62

  • P2 main_thread_lag_ms hidden-tab lastDelta poison / one-shot ping — fully_addressed
  • P2 ST6 replace-the-node-sampler — fully_addressed (wrap + concatenate is specified; residual holes are filed below)

Positive

The lag visibility lifecycle matches fps (abort, clear, no re-arm, visible-window ping, hide→wait→show probe). ST6 now cites launch-main.ts:110 and forbids the bun/deno replacement pattern. Runtime gating and omit-rather-than-synthesize remain the right architecture.

Design re-review — system traces expansion

Re-review of docs/design/system-traces-expansion.md at 1cba75f (prior 929fd62). Design-only; no production code. Checked against the as-built samplers (packages/node/src/system-metrics.ts, packages/node/src/guarded-system-metrics.ts, packages/browser/src/system-metrics.ts), composition roots (packages/{node,browser,webview}/src/launch.ts, packages/electron/src/launch-main.ts), system-traces-provider.ts (poll-only #emit into traces.system), system-events-provider.ts (subscribes in onStart only), createBrowserSystemEventsSource (pagehide on window, visibilitychange on document), InterceptorBase (activate on subscriber presence), and createNodeSystemEventsSource (SIGTERM on onActivate).

The sixth-round commit lands all three remaining P2s from 929fd62: LifecycleSampler.start()/stop() are owned by SystemTracesProvider.onStart/onStop (not the addCaptureProvider sites); dark_mode_changed / freeze/resume are on the events source gated by captureSystemEvents; ST6 wrap forwards lifecycle, try/catch-omits Electron readers, and muxes events instead of registering a second events.system provider.

What remains is the same class of attach-site mistake: which object the new listener is bound to, and whether the standing hook is installed at construction or on provider start.

Overall risk: Medium

(No production code yet; the document is still the spec for ST0–ST8.)

Merge recommendation: Request changes

Pin freeze/resume on document, thread window/document into the traces sampler, attach the ST6 events mux on subscribe (not at launchMain), and make measuresGc: false skip observe(), before this is treated as binding.

Most important to fix

  1. Add freeze/resume on this.#document (they do not bubble; a window listener next to pagehide never fires).
  2. Extend BrowserTracesEnv with the same window/document the events source already takes, and pass them from browser + webview launch — ST4 visibility-gated rAF/lag cannot read globalThis while the rest of the SDK is bound to options.window.
  3. ST6 events mux must attach inner + Electron listeners in on()/onActivate, not in the wrap factory; measuresGc: false must skip PerformanceObserver.observe, not only omit gc_* from sample().

Prior findings at 1cba75f

  • P2 ST0 start() at addCaptureProvider vs provider onStart — fully_addressed
  • P2 ST4 events on the traces sampler — fully_addressed
  • P2 ST6 wrap missing lifecycle / throw isolation / events mux — fully_addressed (as filed; residual attach-site holes are below)

Positive

Provider-owned start()/stop() is the right gate (startProvider, not addProvider). Events vs traces is now explicit, including the independent-option case. ST6 wrap + per-reader try/catch + histogram-forward tests match the bun no-op-wrap failure this PR already lived through. Runtime gating and omit-rather-than-synthesize remain the right architecture.

Design re-review — system traces expansion

Re-review of docs/design/system-traces-expansion.md at c3b4642 (prior 1cba75f). Design-only; no production code. Checked against the as-built samplers (packages/node/src/system-metrics.ts, packages/node/src/guarded-system-metrics.ts, packages/browser/src/system-metrics.ts), composition roots (packages/{node,browser,webview}/src/launch.ts, packages/electron/src/launch-main.ts / launch-renderer.ts), system-events.ts (WindowEvents is add/remove only; DocumentLike has visibilityState), browser launch domDocument vs events wiring (launch.ts:660-661 vs :803), and Electron app.getGPUInfo (returns a Promise).

The seventh-round commit lands three of the four remaining P2s from 1cba75f: freeze/resume on this.#document; ST6 events mux attaches in on()/onActivate not at launchMain; measuresGc: false skips observe() with per-attach try/catch. The fourth (browser sampler env) is only partly addressed: the env fields are named, but “pass the SAME as events” copies browser launch’s {window: win} hole — events never receive domDocument.

What remains is the same class of attach-site / call-shape mistake: which object is bound, and whether the API is actually synchronous.

Overall risk: Medium

(No production code yet; the document is still the spec for ST0–ST8.)

Merge recommendation: Request changes

Pin browser document: domDocument on both events and traces, feature-detect matchMedia, treat getGPUInfo as async, and subscribe to browser-window-created, before this is treated as binding.

Most important to fix

  1. Browser launch.ts:803 must pass { window: win, document: domDocument } like webview already does — do not copy today’s {window: win} into the ST4 sampler.
  2. dark_mode_changed must feature-detect matchMedia on the events env (it is not on WindowEvents); an unguarded call in onActivate aborts input capture.
  3. app.getGPUInfo('basic') returns a Promise — try/catch in sample() does not catch a rejection and cannot complete inside #emit.
  4. Window focus/blur/unresponsive: attach via app.on('browser-window-created') plus existing windows; unresponsive is on webContents, not BrowserWindow.

Prior findings at c3b4642

  • P2 freeze/resume on document not window — fully_addressed
  • P2 BrowserTracesEnv missing window/document — partially_addressed (env fields specified; composition-root instruction still omits browser domDocument)
  • P2 ST6 events mux must not attach at construction — fully_addressed
  • P2 measuresGc: false must skip observe() — fully_addressed

Positive

Document-target freeze, lazy Electron mux, and the GC observe() gate are the right residuals of last round. Provider-owned start()/stop(), events vs traces, and omit-rather-than-synthesize remain the right architecture. @bugsee/webworker correctly stays out of this catalog (no DOM traces/events today).

Design re-review — system traces expansion

Re-review of docs/design/system-traces-expansion.md at 4ad2ae9 (prior c3b4642). Design-only; no production code. Checked against the as-built samplers (packages/browser/src/system-metrics.ts — createBrowserSystemTracesSampler(env = realEnv()) reads only performance/navigator/screen), events source (packages/browser/src/system-events.ts), composition roots (packages/{browser,webview}/src/launch.ts, packages/electron/src/launch-main.ts), traces provider (#emit → traces.system only), and environment builders (node rebuilds from SystemProbe at report time; browser hardware has screen/cpu/device_id, no gpu).

The eighth-round commit lands the four P2s from c3b4642: browser events/traces get an explicit {window, document: domDocument} pair; matchMedia is an env method with skip + try/catch (not WindowEvents); getGPUInfo is kicked from start() with .catch(() => omit); window hooks include browser-window-created and unresponsive on webContents.

What remains is the same class of composition-root / destination mistake: the object you pass is not the object the callee reads, and "context" is not a stream in this SDK.

Overall risk: Medium

(No production code yet; the document is still the spec for ST0–ST8.)

Merge recommendation: Request changes

Pin a complete traces env derived from the same win, pass matchMedia from that win, give GPU a real destination, and hook existing webContents, before this is treated as binding.

Most important to fix

  1. Do not pass the events-only {window, document} pair as BrowserTracesEnv — that skips realEnv() and drops every shipped browser trace (ram_js_heap_*, connection, orientation, battery).
  2. The same launch object still omits matchMedia, so onActivate skip-when-absent makes dark_mode_changed a production no-op.
  3. getGPUInfo is correctly async, but "context" is not a write path here — name environment.hardware (via an Electron getEnvironment wrap) or a one-shot named trace.
  4. web-contents-created misses windows that already exist at onActivate; responsive is also on webContents.

Prior findings at 4ad2ae9

  • P2 browser launch.ts:803 must pass document: domDocument — fully_addressed
  • P2 matchMedia not on WindowEvents / unguarded onActivate throw — partially_addressed (API surface + skip/try-catch specified; launch still does not pass matchMedia)
  • P2 getGPUInfo is a Promise — fully_addressed (async/.catch specified; destination is a new residual below)
  • P2 browser-window-created + unresponsive on webContents — partially_addressed (after-launch windows covered; existing webContents and responsive are not)

Positive

Eighth-round pins for the document pair, MediaQueryList listener, Promise-valued getGPUInfo, and browser-window-created are the right residuals of last round. Provider-owned start()/stop(), events vs traces, wrap-not-replace, and omit-rather-than-synthesize remain the right architecture.

Freezing this design doc at this commit. Review round 9's five findings (browser traces env, matchMedia from the injected window, GPU info destination, existing webContents/window lifetime, aborting in-flight Promises on stop()) are tracked as the pre-implementation checklist in §12 and will be resolved test-first in ST0/ST4/ST5/ST6. No further doc rounds planned.

Review (round 10 @ 5163ce4)

Design-only freeze of docs/design/system-traces-expansion.md. I re-checked the five round-9 items against the real composition roots (browser/src/launch.ts:797-804, webview/src/launch.ts:671-684, node/src/launch.ts:864-870, electron/src/launch-main.ts:17-26,110, browser/src/system-metrics.ts:44-101, core/src/client.ts:891,1091,1827-1833) and against Electron's current BrowserWindow / webContents event docs.

Round-9 leftovers (now §12): traces env, matchMedia from the injected window, and getBattery() abort are still real and are tracked accurately. Those three can stay as pre-implementation work. Two checklist entries are themselves wrong and will mislead ST6 if left as-is.

Findings

P2 §12.3 option (a) has no working seam: getEnvironment is a closure captured inside launchCore / createClient; SystemProbe has no GPU field and buildNodeEnvironment does not forward extras. Wrapping internals.getEnvironment after launchMain is a no-op for reports.

P2 §4.99 / §12.4 still claim win.on('unresponsive') never runs. Electron documents and implements that event on BrowserWindow (it re-emits webContents unresponsive after 50 ms). Attaching “window events” and webContents unresponsive double-records every hang.

Round-9 items 1, 2, and 5: partially_addressed (checklist is right; §4–§9 still contradict). Items 3 and 4: partially_addressed (named, but the named fix is wrong).

Verdict

  1. Overall risk: Medium
  2. Merge recommendation: Request changes — two small §12 corrections, not another prose rewrite.
  3. Must fix before freeze is implementation-ready: GPU destination must name a seam that actually exists (prefer the one-shot traces.system path, or add a node decorateEnvironment / probe field and teach the builder to read it); pick one unresponsive target and drop the “never runs” claim.
  4. Positives: Freezing after nine attach-site rounds is the right call. Lifecycle {start, stop, sample}, wrap-not-replace on Electron, per-runtime honesty flags, events vs traces split, and the §8 measurement log are in good shape. §12.1 / .2 / .5 match the code.

Review (round 11 @ 3ec51e7)

Design-only Q5 follow-up on docs/design/system-traces-expansion.md. I re-checked §13 against the shipped samplers (packages/browser/src/system-metrics.ts:156-160 boolean charging, system-trace-values.ts orientation wire, packages/node/src/system-metrics.ts:141-143 CPU names), the node environment seam (node/src/launch.ts:637-648 → createClient at core/src/client.ts:891,1091; SystemProbe has no GPU field), and Electron's current BrowserWindow re-emit of webContents unresponsive after 50 ms (electron/lib/browser/api/browser-window.ts).

Q5 itself is real work: viewer tables as de-facto contract, ram_js_heap_* ceiling, displays as a list, app_state strings, cpu_pressure ≠ thermal_state, and the boolean charging gap are the right facts to lock before ST0.

What remains is that this commit does not land the decision it just made, and the two round-10 §12 errors are unchanged.

Findings

P2 ST0 / §3.1 still say leave the shipped boolean; §13.4 says change it to {state: 0|1|2|3}. ST0 is the work order. An implementer following §9 ships the shape the viewer still cannot render.

P2 §12.3 option (a) wrap getEnvironment / node probe is still a dead seam. §13.6.3 even leaves hardware.gpu unconfirmed in the viewer — so (a) has neither an SDK write path nor a Q5-confirmed destination. Prefer named one-shot traces.system (b), or add a real pre-createClient seam.

P2 §4.99 / §12.4 still claim win.on('unresponsive') never runs. Electron BrowserWindow does emit it (re-emits webContents after 50 ms, enabled/not-destroyed). Attaching “window events” and webContents hang events double-records. Pick one target.

Round-9 leftovers in §12.1 / .2 / .5: partially_addressed (checklist still accurate vs createBrowserSystemTracesSampler(env = realEnv()) and getBattery().then). Round-10 GPU / unresponsive: not_addressed.

Verdict

  1. Overall risk: Medium
  2. Merge recommendation: Request changes — three small §3/§9/§12 edits, not another attach-site rewrite.
  3. Must fix before freeze is implementation-ready: point ST0 at §13.4 (and strike the §3.1 (a)/(c) default); drop GPU option (a) or name a seam that exists before createClient; pick one unresponsive target and drop the “never runs” claim.
  4. Positives: Reading the viewer/specs instead of guessing Q5 is the right close. Lifecycle {start, stop, sample}, wrap-not-replace on Electron, honesty flags, events vs traces, and the §8 measurement log remain in good shape. charging && level === 1 correctly left as the only open mapping question.

Residual (not re-filed): §4 app_state is still “optional until the viewer needs the step curve” even though §13.3 shows the viewer already has started/foreground/background. §13.3 lists cpu_usage_{user,system} as defined and omits shipped cpu_usage_process (percent, not µs delta).

Review (round 12 @ 8cfccca)

Design-only Q2/Q3 + GPU-destination follow-up on docs/design/system-traces-expansion.md. I re-checked §13.7 against the shipped environment write path (packages/electron has no environment builder; launch-main.ts:110 forwards to launchCore; node/src/launch.ts:637-648 closes over buildNodeEnvironment + SystemProbe; createClient captures that function at core/src/client.ts:891 and calls it at assemble :1091; SystemProbe / buildNodeEnvironment hardware is a closed {model, manufacturer, cpu_count, memory_total, device_id}), the shipped charging boolean (browser/src/system-metrics.ts:159), and Electron's current BrowserWindow re-emit of webContents unresponsive after 50 ms (electron/lib/browser/api/browser-window.ts).

Q2/Q3 themselves are the right close: ceiling-based ram_js_heap_* alongside committed process_memory_heap_*, and omit-rather-than-$$unavailable, match the viewer and the ELU/Deno precedent. Distinguishing hardware.charging (boolean env) from the charging TRACE ({state}) is also correct.

What remains is that this commit claims to resolve the GPU write path as option (a) by naming a builder that does not exist, and the other two round-11 P2s are unchanged.

Findings

P2 ST0 / §3.1 still say leave the shipped boolean; §13.4 and the new §13.7 both require the TRACE to be {state: 0|1|2|3}. ST0 is the work order.

P2 §13.7 "Electron environment builder" / §12.3 option (a) is still a dead write seam. The viewer destination (environment.hardware.gpu) is confirmed; nothing in this SDK can set that field today. Wrapping internals.getEnvironment after launchMain is a no-op for reports.

P2 §4.99 / §12.4 still claim win.on('unresponsive') never runs. Electron BrowserWindow does emit it (re-emits webContents after 50 ms). Attaching window events and webContents hang events double-records.

Round-9 leftovers in §12.1 / .2 / .5: partially_addressed (checklist still accurate vs createBrowserSystemTracesSampler(env = realEnv()) and getBattery().then). Round-11 charging / GPU / unresponsive: not_addressed.

Verdict

  1. Overall risk: Medium
  2. Merge recommendation: Request changes — three small §3/§9/§12/§13 edits, not another attach-site rewrite.
  3. Must fix before freeze is implementation-ready: point ST0 at §13.4 (and strike the §3.1 (a)/(c) default); name a pre-createClient environment seam (or drop (a) for a one-shot traces.system); pick one unresponsive target and drop the "never runs" claim.
  4. Positives: Owner decisions on Q2/Q3 with viewer evidence. hardware.gpu is the right viewer field. Mapping from getGPUInfo('basic') to {vendor, renderer} correctly left UNVERIFIED. Lifecycle {start, stop, sample}, wrap-not-replace, honesty flags, and events vs traces remain in good shape.

Residual (not re-filed): §4 app_state is still "optional until the viewer needs the step curve" even though §13.3 shows started/foreground/background. §13.3 lists cpu_usage_{user,system} and omits shipped cpu_usage_process. §13.6.3 still says GPU placement is open, which now contradicts §13.7.

Review (round 13 @ a9fba44)

Design-only §14 follow-up on docs/design/system-traces-expansion.md. I re-checked the new tracker/producer mapping against InterceptorBase (core/src/interceptor-base.ts:7-12,41-51), the traces provider (capture/src/system-traces-provider.ts:31-74), the browser sampler (browser/src/system-metrics.ts:156-160), node launch wiring (node/src/launch.ts:637-648,864-870), Electron launchMain (electron/src/launch-main.ts:110), createClient capturing getEnvironment (core/src/client.ts:891,1091), buildNodeEnvironment hardware (node/src/environment.ts:117-123), and Electron's BrowserWindow unresponsive event (docs: emitted on the window).

§14 itself is the right close: mapping trackers onto InterceptorBase (subscriber-presence, per-launch, not Android process-lifetime singletons), producers into @bugsee/capture, and the last-value refresh for a windowed store with no provider-visible part hook, matches how this SDK already does events.system. Putting the charging fix on ST0′ finally matches §13.4.

What remains is that ST0′ does not pin exclusive ownership of a trace name, §4 still instructs the LifecycleSampler wrap §14 claims to dissolve, and the two round-12 P2s (GPU write seam, unresponsive target) are unchanged.

Findings

P2 ST0′ keeps the legacy sample() adapter and adds BatteryProducer without removing battery/charging from createBrowserSystemTracesSampler. The cited docs/design/system-traces-st0-plan.md is not in this PR.

P2 §14.3 says the Electron wrap-the-node-sampler problem is dissolved; §4 ST6 still says wrap a LifecycleSampler at launchMain. The header only supersedes §5/§9/§12.

P2 §13.7 "Electron environment builder" / §12.3 option (a) is still a dead write seam. hardware.gpu is the right viewer field; nothing in this SDK can set it today.

P2 §4.99 / §12.4 still claim win.on('unresponsive') never runs. Electron BrowserWindow does emit it. Attaching window events and webContents hang events double-records.

Round-11 charging: fully_addressed (ST0′ includes the fix). Round-9 leftovers in §12.1 / .2 / .5: partially_addressed (now tracker test requirements). Round-12 GPU / unresponsive: not_addressed.

Verdict

  1. Overall risk: Medium
  2. Merge recommendation: Request changes — four small §4/§12/§13/§14 edits, not another architecture rewrite.
  3. Must fix before ST0′ is implementation-ready: exclusive ownership of each trace name (sample() XOR a producer); strike the §4 ST6 LifecycleSampler wrap (Electron adds producers to the same container); name a pre-createClient environment seam for hardware.gpu (or drop (a) for a one-shot traces.system); pick one unresponsive target and drop the "never runs" claim.
  4. Positives: Tracker = InterceptorBase, producer container, refresh-for-windowed-store, and ST0′ including the charging fix are the right owner decision. Honesty flags, omit-rather-than-synthesize, and events vs traces remain in good shape.

Residual (not re-filed): InterceptorBase.#updateActive sets #active before onActivate() (interceptor-base.ts:46-48), so a throwing onActivate is not retried on the next subscribe — per-producer isolation alone will not recover the tracker. §12.1 / .2 / .5 still apply as tracker tests.

Explanation

Both directly linked issues, #76 and #95, are closed and completed. Both are marked as historical context only. No active directly linked target remains, so no linked-issue coding requirements apply to this pull request. The PR changes a design document only. No coding requirement from #76 or #95 is assessed. The CI and review items in the PR objectives are process items, not coding requirements.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The whole-PR diff from merge base 24eded9 to head ca55195 shows a single new file, docs/design/system-traces-expansion.md (+747/-0). This file is the stated scope of the PR. A narrowed diff of docs/design/system-traces-st0-plan.md returned no change. The ten most recent commit subjects are all docs(design) commits. The diff output was truncated after the first file, so the full list of changed paths was not read directly. No changed path in the readable evidence is unrelated to the design document. The conclusion relies on the diff scope, the narrowed check, and the commit subjects.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The PR description states the change is a docs-only update to docs/design/system-traces-expansion.md, a competitor gap analysis and Android/iOS parity port plan for system traces, with section 15 domain trackers. It names the authoritative status sections (14.5, 15.5, 15.6) and says review threads were re-checked and open owner decisions are listed in section 15.5. This directly matches the raw summary, which describes the same design document, its TR0-TR9 status, and its open decisions. The description is specific and on-topic, so it passes.

Review of the latest commits (§15 domain trackers and §15.5 as-built status)

This PR is design-doc only, so there is no executable code to break. I checked the new §14.5/§15 claims against main in this checkout:

  • power-tracker.ts:177-178, :67, :89-91 and application-tracker.ts:185-186 match the "known gaps" described in §15.5.
  • packages/trackers/src/{browser,node,electron} exist as described: the node and electron subpaths are placeholders, and the browser trackers are present.
  • docs/design/system-traces-st0-plan.md now exists. The earlier "cited file not in PR" finding no longer applies.
  • The ST6 text now says "extend via producers". The GPU path now goes through hardwareExtras. Hang events are listened for on webContents only. This covers my earlier concerns about the wrapped sampler, the missing environment builder and the double-recorded hang.

New finding

  • P3 (inline, line 3): The status banner still says "Nothing here is implemented", while §14.5 and §15.5 record shipped work.

Still open

  • Line 50 (§3.1) and line 263 (§9 ST0) still tell the reader to leave the charging boolean as is. §13.4 says to emit {state} instead, and §14.5 says it shipped. Annotating those two cells would remove the contradiction.
  • The held-value retraction problem for storage_estimate and user_idle_state is explicitly an owner decision. The provider re-records the last estimate every refreshMs even after failed polls. I'd lean toward plain emit for storage, since the poll is slow and a stale quota is misleading.
  • PowerTracker.#publish still reads manager.charging without a type check, and Power's and Storage's onError paths are not wrapped. §15.5 documents both gaps honestly. They should be closed before TR9 builds on these trackers.

Verdict

  1. Overall risk: Low (docs only).
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve once the banner, §3.1 and §9 are annotated. The doc is otherwise accurate against the code.
  3. Most important to fix: the stale banner/§3.1/§9 text, then the retraction decision and the two hardening gaps in follow-up PRs.
  4. Positives: §15.5 is unusually honest about gaps and unmerged state. The registry rebind semantics are clearly specified. The omit-never-zero and token-guarded async conventions are sound.

Review of the latest push (docs-only PR, docs/design/system-traces-expansion.md)

I reviewed the doc at HEAD f2e8346e, checking its claims against the as-built notes in §14.5 and §15.5. I did not run any tests or tools. This is a design doc, so there is no runtime risk. Stale or contradictory text is the main hazard.

My earlier findings look fixed in f2e8346e:

  • The title and status banner now say "partially implemented; see §14.5/§15.5".
  • §3.1 and the §9 ST0 row carry superseded markers pointing to §13.4/§14.5.

New findings, posted inline (all P3):

  • Line 162 (§5): the "Lifecycle seam (REQUIRED, ST0)" bullet and the measures* instructions still read as binding. They describe a LifecycleSampler that §14.5 says was deleted. The same stale wording is in the §4 GPU row and in §12 item 5. Add superseded markers there.
  • Line 88 (main_thread_lag_ms timer drift): this is a good fix for the ping scheme. A sleep/resume or a debugger pause while the tab is still visible would still record one huge "lag" sample. There is no sanity ceiling and no baseline reset on wake.
  • Line 573 (§15.3 environment tracker): only private-mode detection is gated. The defaults for permission states, DNT/GPC, webdriver, cookies-enabled and similar fields are unspecified, and some of them are privacy-sensitive.

Still open, already recorded in §15.5 and not re-filed:

  • Held values cannot be retracted (storage_estimate, user_idle_state). Plain emit for storage is the lower-risk option.
  • The Power and Storage reporter-wrapping gaps and the PowerTracker.#publish unguarded charging read. These should be closed before TR9 builds on those trackers.

Verdict

  1. Overall risk: Low (docs only).
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve. The three P3s can go in as a follow-up.
  3. Most important to fix: the superseded markers in §5, §12 and the GPU row, then the lag sanity ceiling, then the environment-hint defaults.
  4. Positives:

Review of the latest push (d87f3419, docs-only PR)

I read the diff since the last reviewed commit (ed35137c): c130ea77 and d87f3419, 40 added and 24 removed lines in docs/design/system-traces-expansion.md. I checked the new claims against origin/main (9b05e362). I did not run tests or linters.

Checked against main, no discrepancies:

  • Trackers and exports: packages/trackers/src/node/ and src/electron/ hold the implementations (process, storage, power, display, application, GPU mapping), and the four changesets exist. ProcessStatsTracker and GpuInfoCache no longer exist anywhere under packages/.
  • Honesty gates: @bugsee/bun and @bugsee/deno pass the measures* flags (measuresV8Heap, measuresAvailableMemory, measuresGc; Deno also measuresEventLoopDelay: false).
  • Electron wiring:
    • launchMain has gpuInfoType and a fail-closed captureWindowEvents.
    • wrapSystemEventsSource exists in node/src/launch.ts:299.
    • The Electron process tracker converts sizes from KiB (KIB = 1024), as the doc says.
  • Cited lines:
    • environment-tracker.ts:689 is the detectPrivateMode !== true guard.
    • browser/src/launch.ts:954 is get(BugseeOption.CaptureEnvironmentHints, true).
    • system-events.ts:247 is ?? true.
    • viewport-source.ts:194-196 still has its own resize/scroll listeners.
    • application-tracker.ts:89 and :185-186 match the cleanup items.
  • Sampler override: d87f3419 fixes CodeRabbit's last finding. launch.ts:925-933 passes sensors: false with an explicit systemMetricsSampler, and trace-producers.ts:642 returns [battery] in that case. So the new wording is right: the override replaces heap, connection, orientation, app_state and fps, and battery still runs.

Earlier findings: nothing from previous rounds has regressed. The PR description I flagged last round now matches §15.5. The captureUserIdle opt-in is recorded as pending owner confirmation in both places.

New findings: none against the file. The "Remaining plan" cleanup items still hold. The statement that no cleanup PR is open rests on the author's gh pr list check and I did not re-verify it.

Not re-filed (recorded in §15.5):

  • Held values cannot be retracted, which now also covers electron_displays.
  • main_thread_lag_ms spikes on suspend or a debugger pause.
  • Electron GPU 'basic' vs 'complete'.
  • The captureEnvironmentHints name and the privacy scope of the hints/permissions stages.
  • The Power and Storage reporter-wrapping gaps and the unchecked charging read.
  • The "Not verified without a real Electron" list. Nothing in TR9 has been run in a real Electron process, and the doc says so.

Verdict

  1. Overall risk: Low (docs only).
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve. Merging still needs the required human approval and resolved conversations.
  3. Most important to fix: the owner calls on held-value retraction and captureUserIdle. After that, the cleanup slice, the first real-Electron smoke run, and the lag-spike ceiling.
  4. Positives:
    • The §15.5 as-built description matches the merged code, including the cited lines.
    • The unverified Electron behaviour is kept separate from what the injected-fake tests cover.
    • The privacy decisions are recorded with their dates, and open ones are marked pending.

Claims checked against main, no discrepancies:

  • ui-tracker.ts:404-409 has the #visualViewport() fallback to window.visualViewport.
  • connectivity-tracker.ts:52 declares the transition stage. :174-181 emits it per DOM online/offline event, and the kind comes from the event type with no baseline.
  • system-events.ts:197-210 derives display_mode_changed with an optional previousMode. :218-225 maps transition to the online/offline events.
  • viewport-source.ts now imports uiTrackerFor from @bugsee/trackers/browser and has no listeners of its own.
  • application-tracker.ts no longer binds online/offline. Only a comment at line 20 mentions them, so the "removed in refactor(trackers, browser): video.aux viewport on UiTracker, drop Application online/offline stages, display_mode_changed event #93" statement holds.
  • The table rows and the "Remaining plan" edits are consistent with each other. I found no leftover text saying the cleanup is not started or that display_mode_changed is not built.
  • Adding user_idle_state to the viewer-confirmation list is reasonable.

Earlier findings: none regressed. The superseded markers, the sequential decision numbering, the sampler-override wording, and the as-built corrections from earlier rounds are all still in place.

New findings in the file: none.

Outside the diff: the PR description is stale again. It says the doc was verified against 9b05e362. It also says "No other PR is open" and lists the cleanup as "not started", and its Remaining plan still includes that cleanup. #93 has merged, so the description should say that and reference 7b92fa64. Update it before merge so it matches §15.5.

Still recorded in §15.5, not re-filed:

  • Held values cannot be retracted.
  • main_thread_lag_ms spikes on suspend or a debugger pause.
  • Electron GPU 'basic' vs 'complete'.
  • The captureEnvironmentHints name and the privacy scope of the hints/permissions stages.
  • captureUserIdle is still pending owner confirmation.
  • The Power and Storage reporters are not wrapped in try/catch.
  • The "Not verified without a real Electron" list.

Verdict

  1. Overall risk: Low (docs only).
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve. Merging still needs the required human approval and resolved conversations.
  3. Most important to fix: refresh the PR description. After that, settle the owner decisions in §15.5, run the first real-Electron smoke test, and close the Power/Storage reporter hardening gaps.
  4. Positives: The doc follows main closely, with file and line citations that match the code. It correctly moved the refactor(trackers, browser): video.aux viewport on UiTracker, drop Application online/offline stages, display_mode_changed event #93 cleanup from "not started" to done. It also keeps what is verified separate from what is unverified.

Use electron_displays for the Electron trace.

The P3 row still names the trace displays, while the as-built status records electron_displays. This can misdirect implementation or viewer validation toward the wrong wire identifier.

Suggested fix
-| `displays` as an Android-shaped display LIST (id, size, scale, state), + add/remove/metrics-change events | `screen.getAllDisplays()` — use the name `displays` ONLY once that list shape is specified/confirmed against the viewer (Q5); else a JS-specific name |

Review of the latest push (d6929919, docs-only PR)

I read the diff since the last reviewed commit (a7e2c50b). It is one line in docs/design/system-traces-expansion.md: the P3 displays row now says the as-built name is the JS-specific electron_displays and that viewer confirmation (Q5) is still pending. I did not run tests or linters.

Checked against origin/main, no discrepancies:

  • electron_displays is the trace name in packages/electron/src/launch-main.ts and its test, and packages/electron/README.md:88 says displays stays reserved until an Android-shaped list is confirmed against the viewer.

Earlier findings:

  • The CodeRabbit finding about the P3 trace name is addressed. It is the one finding that was left open.
  • Nothing from previous rounds has regressed.

New findings: none.

Still recorded in §15.5, not re-filed: the held-value retraction problem (now including electron_displays), the main_thread_lag_ms false spike on suspend or debugger pause, Electron GPU 'basic' vs 'complete', the captureEnvironmentHints scope, the captureUserIdle owner confirmation, the Power/Storage reporter hardening gaps, and the unverified-without-real-Electron list.

Outside the diff: the PR description still says the doc was verified against 7b92fa64. Please keep it in line with §15.5 before merge.

Verdict

  1. Overall risk: Low (docs only).
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve. Merging still needs the required human approval and resolved conversations.
  3. Most important to fix: the owner decisions in §15.5, the first real-Electron smoke run, and the Power/Storage reporter hardening.
  4. Positives: the doc keeps tracking main closely, and the new note separates the as-built name from the pending viewer confirmation.

Review of the latest push (3079dd03, docs-only PR)

I read the diff since the last reviewed commit (d6929919). It is one commit in docs/design/system-traces-expansion.md. I checked its code citations against origin/main (ae65d762), because my checkout is the older PR head. I did not run tests or linters.

Checked against origin/main, no discrepancies:

  • PRIVATE_QUOTA_BELOW_BYTES = 120 MiB is in environment-tracker.ts:147.
  • serviceName is mapped in packages/trackers/src/electron/process-tracker.ts (:82, :202).
  • The connection producer omits link fields when not_reachable and keeps save_data, as described.
  • launchMain still defaults gpuInfoType to 'basic', and the 8192 glExtensions cap exists.
  • ae65d762 is on origin/main.

New findings (inline, all P3):

  • Line 684: the "Both mappings are UNVERIFIED" sentence is left over, and it contradicts the measured result in decision 3 just above it.
  • Line 690: decision 7 points to a "Not verified without a real Electron" heading that this push removed.
  • Line 93 (§4 P2): it still claims "Timer drift cannot miss a block". Decision 10 records a 1.6 s block reading 616 ms. The "Honest limit" text should mention that under-reporting.

Minor, not filed inline: decision 3 is repeated in the "Remaining plan" bullet list, and decision 10 is a method limitation rather than an open decision. Neither blocks merge.

Earlier findings: nothing from earlier rounds has regressed. The held-value retraction, lag-spike ceiling, captureEnvironmentHints scope and captureUserIdle items are still recorded as open decisions.

Outside the diff: the PR description says the doc was verified against main at ae65d762. That matches the doc.

Verdict

  1. Overall risk: Low (docs only).
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve once the three wording fixes land. Merging still needs the required human approval and the open owner decisions.
  3. Most important to fix: the stale "UNVERIFIED" sentence, the dangling reference, and the "cannot miss a block" claim.
  4. Positives: the smoke-run section separates what was verified from what was not (locked screen, no real power or crashReporter events). It also ties each defect to a fix PR.

CI note on 7be3ca3: review / review failed because the Claude review action itself errored ("Claude encountered an error after 1s", run 40668915757) before it reviewed anything. This PR changes only docs/design/system-traces-expansion.md, so the failure is not caused by the diff. I could not re-run it: this session's integration gets 403 Resource not accessible by integration on rerun-failed-jobs. Someone with write access should re-run that job once.
