Review leftovers from #125.

  • README: lists thermal_state / cpu_speed_limit; states the listener shape (details object first arg, bare value tolerated) and that Electron has no getCurrentCPUSpeedLimit.
  • Test: the speed limit conversion is Math.round (not floor); added boundary test 62.5->63, 99.6->100, 99.4->99, 0.4->0 (floor and ceil mutants verified killed).
  • Comments: relaunch comment now lists thermal_state/cpu_speed_limit; subscribe-first comment reworded (synchronous, so no race).

ci:local --force --e2e passed.

…ng boundary test, stale comments

Follow-up to #125: README lists thermal_state/cpu_speed_limit and the details-object listener shape (no getCurrentCPUSpeedLimit in Electron); pin Math.round at 62.5/99.6/99.4 boundaries (floor/ceil mutants killed); relaunch comment lists the new traces; reword the subscribe-first comment.

Review of #136: no real issues found

  • Read the diff and the surrounding code (power-tracker.ts, system-traces.ts, launch-main.ts)
  • Checked the README, comment and test claims against the implementation
  • Posted the review

I did not run the tests or the linter. I read the diff and the code it touches. I have no inline findings, so I posted none.

Checks against the code

  • Rounding test: speedLimitOf (packages/trackers/src/electron/power-tracker.ts:75-80) uses Math.round after a 0..100 range check. The expected values in the new test follow from that: 62.5→63, 99.6→100, 99.4→99, 0.4→0, 0.5→1, 37.49→37. The 62.5 case is the one that catches a floor mutant, and 99.6 catches both floor and ceil. 99.6 stays inside the range check, so the test doesn't trip the drop path.
  • README thermal_state: The text matches the code. current('thermalState') returns a state only when getCurrentThermalState is a function, and an unrecognised state becomes unknown and writes nothing. This agrees with the producer comment in system-traces.ts:175-187.
  • README cpu_speed_limit:
    • The producer emits only from the speedLimit subscription (system-traces.ts:216), with no baseline read, so "no value until the OS reports a limit" is correct.
    • The tracker has no current('speedLimit'), which is consistent with the README line on getCurrentCPUSpeedLimit.
    • A measured 0 is emitted, and out-of-range or non-numeric values are dropped, as the README says.
  • Relaunch comment: Listing thermal_state and cpu_speed_limit is correct. They are Electron-only producers and are reset along with the other systemTraceProducers.
  • Subscribe-first comment: The rewording is accurate. Subscribing and reading are both synchronous in onStart, so no event can fall between them.

P3, optional nit: The README states the { state } / { limit } details shape as fact. The tracker's own comment (power-tracker.ts:64-67) says this shape "was not verified on a real Electron", which is why bare values are also accepted. Consider softening the README wording to "per Electron's docs". The code handles both forms, so it does not affect behaviour.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low. The changes are docs, comments and one test only, with no runtime behaviour change.
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve and merge. I cannot formally approve PRs.
  3. Most important issues: None. Only the optional README wording nit above.
  4. Positives:
    • The boundary test pins the nearest-integer behaviour with both sides of each boundary.
    • The README and comments now match the implementation, including the Electron limitation (no getCurrentCPUSpeedLimit).
    • The subscribe-first comment now explains why the ordering is safe, and when it would start to matter.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Clarified that thermal state and CPU speed limit telemetry pauses after relaunch until the main process is launched again.
    • Expanded power telemetry guidance to describe trace conditions and sources, platform limits, missing-value behavior, and replacement by system metrics sampling.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for rounding CPU speed limits to the nearest integer, including midpoint cases and values near zero and 100.

The README now documents the platform, event, validation, and listener-input rules for the thermal_state and cpu_speed_limit traces. The relaunch comments include both traces among telemetry that stops until launchMain runs again. A system-trace comment clarifies the synchronous ordering of subscription and baseline reading. A test covers speed-limit rounding boundaries.

Re-review of #136 after the new push (1a27208d): no real issues found

  • Read the new commit and the surrounding code
  • Checked the CodeRabbit finding about systemMetricsSampler against the code

I did not run tests or lint. I read the diff and the code it touches.

Earlier findings now resolved

  • CodeRabbit (README line 88): The README now says that supplying the legacy systemMetricsSampler replaces the trace producers, so thermal_state and cpu_speed_limit stay absent. This matches packages/electron/src/launch-main.ts:409-415. The Electron producers are only built when nodeOptions.systemMetricsSampler === undefined, and writesTraces (line 400-402) is also false in that case. The finding is addressed.
  • My earlier P3 nit (README stating the { state } / { limit } shape as fact): The README still states it flatly, and the tracker comment at power-tracker.ts:64-67 says the shape "was not verified on a real Electron". Behaviour is unaffected because the tracker accepts both forms and the README says so. This is optional: soften to "per Electron's docs" if you like.

Other checks

  • Comment lines: The new comment text in launch-main.ts:407 and launch-main.ts:463-464 is accurate. These lines exceed the surrounding wrap width (about 120 columns). If lint doesn't enforce line length, this is only cosmetic.
  • Code and tests: The rest of the diff is comments, README text and the Math.round boundary test. I found no behaviour changes.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low. Docs, comments and one test only.
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve and merge. I cannot formally approve PRs.
  3. Most important issues: None.
  4. Positives: The README now documents the systemMetricsSampler exception, and the comments match the code.
