Tune CodeRabbit reviews from a 90-day audit - #179
Auto-approval. Approves once the latest commit is reviewed, threads are resolved, pre-merge checks pass and merge risk is low or below. It requests changes while blocking findings are open.
It never approves changes to the review rules, CI or the agent skills.
Authors can't approve their own PRs by command.
merge_risk_instructions describe what is risky in this repo.
Turns off docstring coverage and LanguageTool.
Keeps Biome on (a path instruction suppresses its false "Illegal return statement" on scripts) and SkillSpector on (outside users install the skills).
Reviews draft PRs too.
Raises auto-pause from 5 to 15 reviewed commits, because final commits on several PRs went unreviewed.
Learnings are local, with a 7-day approval delay.
Uses en-GB.
Validated against schema.v2.json.
No path_filters. A lone include pattern makes CodeRabbit review only the matching paths, so icons stay with human reviewers.
Build-plugin references: the platform facts that authors' agents need now live here:
data-streams.md:
post-request scripts run once per page
only declare paging the endpoint honours
apply both timeframe bounds
filter or count in the API when the total result is capped
oob-content.md:
tile parameters belong under dataSourceConfig
every variable a tile uses is declared
per-object (httpRequestScopedSingle) overview tiles send one request per object
wrap any {{…}} that isn't a templating token in {{{{raw}}}}
data-streams.md also gets the clarified tags guidance.
REVIEW.md:
New "How to review" section. Repo references outrank general knowledge, and an author's live results outrank vendor docs. Uncertain API behaviour is raised as a question. Severity is calibrated. Each pattern is raised once, findings are not re-raised, the PR body is not restated, and summaries stay current.
New "Platform facts" section. Short entries linking to the references, plus SmartViz notes for reviewers only. SmartViz itself is documented by squaredup skill visualize.
Fixed rules:
Tell a new plugin by its metadata.json being added. This was the most common false finding: version bumps requested on new plugins.
Shape options and formatExpression are display formatting. Script rounding is a Minor finding.
timeframes: false is accepted; "none" needs supportsNoneTimeframe.
objectLimit applies only to scoped streams.
Noun naming applies to streams, not columns.
CODEOWNERS is encouraged, not required.
HTTPS-only patterns are not required.
Tags should group related streams: neither one tag on every stream nor many tags covering one stream each.
Declared repository-wide PRs are exempt from the one-plugin rule. They still need a maintainer merge past CI.
New checks for misses:
counts from capped lists
one-bound timeframe filters
sentinel values
unpaged imports
per-object overview tiles
unique child object names
optional import steps
unwrapped template text
cspell.json and tooling config
product name casing
duplicate scripts
toggles for on/off settings
README boilerplate
skill-file rules
AGENTS.md: points to .coderabbit.yaml, and adds guidance for coding agents responding to CodeRabbit: verify before applying, apply the smallest fix, and don't bump the version every review round.
Add .coderabbit.yaml and extend REVIEW.md with review-process rules,
platform facts CodeRabbit repeatedly got wrong, and checks for issues
human reviewers caught that it missed.

Summary
Plugin authoring and platform guidance .claude/skills/build-plugin/references/data-streams.md, .claude/skills/build-plugin/references/oob-content.md, REVIEW.md
The references and platform-specific review rules cover result caps, paging, timeframes, per-page scripts, deduplication, tile parameters, dashboard variables, request counts, data shapes and imports.
Repository review rules and version guidance REVIEW.md, .claude/skills/deploy-plugin/SKILL.md
The rules add or revise guidance for PR scope, versioning, security, repository conventions and review practices. New plugin version guidance uses the major number from the versioned folder.
CodeRabbit review configuration .coderabbit.yaml
The configuration sets review options, path-specific guidance, a PR-template check, tool settings and knowledge sources.
Merge Risk: Low · previous review 0bc8e
Version guidance is currently correct but duplicated, and repository-wide changes may require a maintainer override because CI still reports a scope failure. These are bounded follow-up risks.

Use the inputPattern option name in the Timestamps rule.
REVIEW.md says a date or timestamp column needs an inputFormat to accept numeric epoch values. The data-stream reference documents inputPattern as the date shape option for parsing input, and it does not list inputFormat. Reviewers who follow the wording may look for the wrong property. Authors may configure a property that the platform does not read.
Update the two references to use the documented name:

Update both timestamp references in the Timestamps rule and Platform facts to
use the documented inputPattern option instead of inputFormat. Confirm that
unixSeconds is a supported inputPattern value before retaining it in the

Keep each normative rule in one canonical reference.
The tag rule at data-streams.md:259 restates the policy at REVIEW.md:141. It is not verbatim, but it repeats the same normative requirements. The dashboard checks in REVIEW.md:129-131 also overlap the detailed rules in oob-content.md.
The paging, per-page script, and tile-parameter summaries already link to their detailed references. Keep that intentional checklist/reference split. Replace the remaining duplicate prose with links to the canonical sections:
Suggested fix
- - Variables - Every variable a tile references must be declared on the dashboard.- - Request volume - Flag overview tiles that send one request per object (per environment, per device) where an imported property or a single list call would do.- - Timeframes - Check the stream's `timeframes` before calling a tile's timeframe redundant or wrong; a stream may only offer one range.+ - Variables, request volume and tile timeframes - See [oob-content.md, Dashboard rules](.claude/skills/build-plugin/references/oob-content.md#dashboard-rules).- - tags - Required on most data streams. Tags group related streams in the tile editor, so check the set across the plugin rather than stream by stream: flag a tag applied to every stream (it distinguishes nothing) and flag many tags that each cover only one stream (merge them to a broader shared tag). Reuse existing tags from other plugins where it makes sense, and never use the plugin's name in a tag.+ - tags - See [data-streams.md, Stream-level properties](.claude/skills/build-plugin/references/data-streams.md#stream-level-properties) for the canonical tag requirements.

This answers the CodeRabbit review findings that have no inline thread.
Outside diff, inputFormat vs inputPattern (REVIEW.md): fixed in 493d69a. inputPattern is the documented date shape option, and both mentions now use it. I didn't take the suggested example value unixSeconds, which nothing in the repository uses. The example is now "inputPattern": "t" for Unix seconds, which is what OpenRouter's created column uses (plugins/OpenRouter/v1/dataStreams/models.json).
Nitpick, duplicate tag and dashboard rules: not changing. REVIEW.md is the reviewer's checklist and the references are the authoring detail. Keeping a one-line, checkable statement of each rule in REVIEW.md is deliberate, so a review can apply it without following a link. Explanations that need detail (per-page scripts, paging, dataSourceConfig) already link to the references instead of restating them.
Failed pre-merge check, "PR template": the check's instructions were wrong, not this PR. The Miscellaneous template has no test plan section. Fixed in e78a1b3: a testing section is now only required for the "Add a new plugin" and "Change to an existing plugin" templates.

Allow declared repository-wide changes through CI.
A repository-wide PR can use the Miscellaneous change template and declare the exception in its body. The review guidance and CodeRabbit check permit this. The pull_request workflow still fails every diff that touches more than one plugin because its plugin-count check does not read the body. It then exits with status 1, so the supported repository-wide workflow cannot merge.
Update the CI check to honour the declared exception, or remove that exception from both the review guidance and CodeRabbit check so all checks enforce the same rule.

CodeRabbit finding outside the diff, "Allow declared repository-wide changes through CI" (.coderabbit.yaml): agreed that CI and the review guidance disagree. I've fixed the guidance in 63db040 rather than changing CI.
pr-run.yaml's scope check doesn't read the PR description, so a declared repository-wide change still fails it. These PRs are rare and have always gone in through a maintainer merge past that check, for example #148 and #178. REVIEW.md and the "PR template" check now say so, and reviews are told not to report that CI failure as a finding.
Teaching the workflow to read a declaration in the PR body would let any author opt out of the one-plugin rule. That's a policy change for the maintainers, not part of this PR.

Scope the 1.0.0 rule to new v1/ plugins.
A new v2/ plugin set to 1.0.0 fails the CI major-version check, because CI requires the major version to match the folder. Line 28 of REVIEW.md tells reviewers to ask for 1.0.0 on any new plugin. Line 29 says a new major folder starts at <N>.0.0. These rules conflict for v2/ and later folders. AGENTS.md:88 and .coderabbit.yaml:70-72 already use <N>.0.0 for new plugins.

REVIEW.md restates rules briefly for reviewers on purpose. Only flag
explanations copied between references, and point to AGENTS.md for which
file is authoritative.

Good point on drift. In fd23ec6, every Platform fact that a build-plugin reference already documents is now a one-line pointer to that reference: per-page scripts, paging, dataSourceConfig, data-size shapes, autocomplete values and showScripting. The detail now lives only in the skill files.
The remaining facts have a single home in REVIEW.md, because no reference documents them yet: SmartViz behaviour, mustache, configValidation, pickers, imports and date parsing. The section now says to replace a fact with a pointer once a reference covers it. I also removed an older line further up that repeated the "Everything in the first review" rule.
On whether CodeRabbit takes it into account: .coderabbit.yaml loads REVIEW.md, AGENTS.md and the build-plugin references as guidelines, and the skills path instruction now asks it to flag explanations copied between references.
Facts the build-plugin references already document are now one-line
pointers, and a duplicate of the first-review rule is removed. Facts
documented nowhere else stay, with a note to swap them for pointers once
a reference covers them.
