Purpose / problem solved: Brings a self-hosted OpenObserve instance into SquaredUp. It imports streams as objects and provides data streams for stream details, SQL log/metric/trace search, PromQL metrics (including a guided metric → label → value picker), recent traces, pipelines and their execution history, alert rules, and SLOs.
Primary audience: Platform teams and SREs running self-hosted OpenObserve for observability.
Authentication method(s): HTTP Basic auth. The user supplies the base64 login:token value (from a Service Account) or email:password value, which is sent as Authorization: Basic <key>.

🧪 Test plan
Tested against a live, authenticated self-hosted OpenObserve instance (single node, default organization) in a SquaredUp organization:
Deployed with squaredup deploy and authenticated the data source in the UI; config validation passes against the streams endpoint.
Ran the import and confirmed OpenObserve Stream objects for logs, metrics and traces streams.
Exercised every visible data stream with squaredup test against real data. That included scoped streams against imported stream objects, and optional parameters such as the Alerts/SLOs Folder filter (confirmed it narrows results, and an unknown folder returns none).
Checked tiles in the SquaredUp UI. Fixed the columns that failed to format there: a column that is null in every row fails to convert to its shape (Pipelines Last Error, Pipeline History Error/Delay/Evaluation Took).
Checked units against live values: the v2 alert and pipeline timestamps are in microseconds and are converted.
squaredup validate passes.
⚠️ Known limitations
The full list is in the README's Known limitations section. The main ones:
Self-hosted OpenObserve only. Cloud, ingestion, dashboards, reports and user management are out of scope.
Traces Latest is fixed to the last hour. The endpoint aggregates every span in the range, and a wide range can exhaust the server's memory. Its "View Trace" link follows OpenObserve's documented route but hasn't been clicked through.
Search / Logs Search need the stream name typed into the SQL. Very broad timeframes can exceed the platform's response size limit.
Pipeline History doesn't include Delay or Evaluation Took, which were never populated on the test instance. Query Took's unit (ms) is inferred, not documented.
Incidents, Incident Stats and Cluster Info ship hidden. Incident Stats returned "Not Supported" on the test instance, and Cluster Info needs a clustered deployment.
Read-only: nothing is created, modified or deleted in OpenObserve.
📚 Checklist
This PR adds a single plugin only
Plugin, datastream and UI naming follow SquaredUp guidelines
Deployable shell for OpenObserve Cloud: metadata/ui config, icon, and a
config-validation stream against the streams list endpoint. Auth is still
being worked out with OpenObserve engineering, so the config currently
takes a raw Authorization key rather than separate username/password.

…oards
Pivots auth from OpenObserve Cloud (Basic auth via platform authMode kept
failing against the hosted API from SquaredUp's backend) to self-hosted
instances, where a raw pass-through Authorization key resolved it.
Adds the full plugin: stream import (logs/metrics/traces into one
OpenObserve Stream object type), five data streams (stream details,
functions, search, field values, cluster info), an Overview and Stream
perspective dashboard, and custom type metadata.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Adds 7 new data streams discovered via the instance's Swagger UI:
metricsQuery (PromQL range queries), tracesLatest (recent spans in a
trace stream), pipelines + pipelineHistory, incidents + incidentStats,
and logsSearch (an unscoped sibling of the existing scoped search
stream). Surfaces Pipelines/Incidents/Metrics/Logs tiles on the
Overview dashboard.
incidentStats returns 403 on this instance (likely edition/license
gated) and serviceGraphTopology was dropped entirely after 404ing on
every path tried — both handled the same way as the existing
clusterInfo precedent, or removed outright.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Drops the raw spans array in favour of a spanCount column, converts
start/end time to dates, adds a durationMs column (duration is
confirmed microseconds, verified against raw start/end deltas), and
makes trace_id a link into OpenObserve's web UI for that trace.
The web UI link format is unverified against the live product (no
working Chrome extension connection this session) - documented as a
known limitation.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
service_name and models were still exploding into numbered per-index
columns (service_name.0.*, models.0) via the metadata catch-all, same
problem as the spans array fixed previously. Summarize both instead:
serviceCount + a comma-joined services list, and a comma-joined models
string.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
search.sql, logsSearch.sql, streamFieldValues.fields, and
metricsQuery.promql all had "required": true as a bare top-level
property instead of nested under "validation", so it was silently
ignored. This let a tile save with an empty query, which OpenObserve's
Prometheus endpoint correctly rejected with "no expression found in
input" rather than the platform blocking it at config time.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Adds simpleMetricsQuery plus three hidden backing streams (metricNames,
metricLabels, labelValues) implementing cascading autocomplete dropdowns
- pick a metric, then a label scoped to it, then values scoped to both
- with an optional aggregation wrapping the resulting PromQL query.
Found and fixed two platform quirks along the way: a primitive-array
pathToData row auto-names its column "value" (not "result"), which
collided with a same-named declared column; and single-select
autocomplete fields resolve as plain strings inside {{ }} getArgs
expressions, not the {value} object shape scripts see.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Replaces the combined "Labels" JSON blob column with a dedicated
"Name" column (the metric name) and one individual column per label,
shared by both Metrics Query and Simple Metrics Query since they use
the same response-flattening script.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Switches the PromQL Query field from a single-line text input to a
multi-line code editor, matching the look of built-in Prometheus-style
query fields elsewhere in the platform.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Extracts stream_name/stream_type from the source JSON blob into their
own Source Stream Name / Source Stream Type columns, alongside the
existing raw Source column.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
startTime was a "computed: true" + valueExpression-derived column,
which doesn't show up as a Bucket option in the tile editor's native
Group-by UI - every other working date column in this plugin is a
real field set directly in the script instead, so startTime/endTime/
durationMs move there too.
Also adds an optional Bucket interval field (e.g. "5m") that switches
the stream to one row per fixed-width time window (trace count plus
avg/min/max duration), since the tile editor's native Group-by has no
granularity finer than hourly.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
timestamp's valueExpression self-referenced $['timestamp'] (the same
column it was overriding), which rendered empty - same bug class as
tracesLatest's trace_id link. Moved to a real script-computed field,
verified against real pipeline-run data now available on the test
instance.
Query Took's unit isn't documented anywhere by OpenObserve; labeled as
milliseconds (estimated) based on the Search endpoint's documented
"took" unit and the realistic magnitudes seen in testing. Delay and
Evaluation Took now use proper "seconds" shapes, matching their
explicit _in_secs field names.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Removes the streamFieldValues stream and the "Field Values" tile that
referenced it on the Stream perspective dashboard.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Removes the functions stream and the two Overview dashboard tiles
(scalar count + table) that referenced it.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Lists Service Level Objectives with their current status (SLI,
coverage, error budget remaining, burn rate), with an optional folder
filter. Skips the no_data figures rather than defaulting them to zero,
matching OpenObserve's own distinction between "not yet measured" and
"measured as zero". Also covers the Functions/Stream Field Values
removals in the Data streams and What this plugin monitors sections.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
/traces/latest runs a GROUP BY trace_id aggregation over every span in
the chosen range before applying Max rows, so scan cost scales with
the timeframe, not the row limit. A full-day range scanned ~1.66GB
across 21 Parquet files and OOMKilled the OpenObserve pod (confirmed
via its logs/exit code mid-session). Restricting to the last hour
keeps this safe by default; verified live post-change with no crash.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Alerts lists the organization's alert rules from the v2 alerts API with
current level, last outcome and evaluation timestamps (converted from
microseconds), plus an optional folder filter. The Overview dashboard's
Incidents section now shows Alerts instead, since Incidents, Incident
Stats and Cluster Info are hidden from the tile editor.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Hidden streams still contribute their tags as headers in the data stream
picker, leaving empty Cluster and Incidents groups. Fold Incidents and
Incident Stats into Alerts, and Cluster Info into Streams.

last_error is absent on healthy pipelines, and the null failed to format
in its json-shaped column. Make it a string column: empty when absent,
the text itself if a string, compact JSON otherwise. paused_at is in
microseconds, so convert it and show it as a date.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A column that is null in every row fails to convert to its shape in the
UI. Coerce Error to "" on successful runs, and drop Delay and Evaluation
Took, which were never populated (no honest stand-in value). The
Overview dashboard's Pipeline History table shows Query Took in Delay's
place, and the README notes the omission.

plugins/OpenObserve/v1/dataStreams/scripts/metricsQuery.js:8-11 Minor · Potential issue · Quick win
Flattening arbitrary metric labels into reserved output columns creates collisions: a 'name' label overwrites the extracted metric name, while 'timestamp' and 'value' labels are overwritten by the sample fields.
Rows lose label dimensions or expose an incorrect metric name, preventing consumers from reliably identifying or grouping series.
This can occur when: A returned series has a label named 'name', 'timestamp', or 'value'.

The handlers discard the server explanation for every Cluster Info 404 and Incident Stats 403, replacing it with a deployment- or license-oriented message. Those HTTP codes can also represent routing/version problems or insufficient permissions.
Users lose the actionable server error and may troubleshoot deployment mode or licensing instead of the actual routing or authorization problem.
This can occur when: A clustered deployment returns a descriptive routing/version 404, or Incident Stats returns a permission-denied 403 on an otherwise supported instance.

Read count and stat tiles from streams, which omits schema.
Six tiles read only count or stats.* columns: Log Streams, Metric Streams, and Trace Streams (count), and Log Documents, Log Storage (MB), and Log Compressed Size (MB) (sums). streamDetails sends fetchSchema=true, so these tiles request each stream's schema without using it. The streams data stream uses the same endpoint with fetchSchema=false and provides name, stream_type, stats.doc_num, stats.storage_size, and stats.compressed_size.
Apply the same two-line change to the tiles at lines 60–61, 94–95, 128–129, 162–163, and 196–197.
Keep Avg Fields per Log Stream (lines 230–231) and the Log Streams table (line 264) on streamDetails. They read total_fields, which the streams metadata does not declare.
The saving depends on request sharing. While two tiles still use streamDetails, the schema-inclusive request still runs. If the platform does not share requests across tiles, moving six tiles adds a second list request.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Both label-discovery streams require timeframe bounds, but their supplied picker callers explicitly pass only metric and label inputs. If autocomplete requests do not inherit the parent tile timeframe, discovery can use missing or unrelated bounds.
Relevant label or value options are omitted, and allowCustomValues:false prevents selecting the desired historical filter.
This can occur when: A user configures Simple Metrics Query for a historical interval containing labels or values absent from the autocomplete's default interval.
Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Alerts, Pipelines, and SLOs each issue a single list request without paging controls or traversal, then consume only data.list. If an endpoint applies default pagination, later records will be silently omitted.
Organization-wide lists and dashboard counts omit records beyond the first page, potentially hiding unhealthy alerts or SLOs.
This can occur when: An organization exceeds a deployed endpoint's default page size, for example 51 alert rules with a default page size of 50.

Add a derived series column and point the Overview tile at it.
The Overview tile sets seriesColumn to labels. metricsQuery.js does not emit a labels column. It emits each metric label as a top-level key. Every row from metric_count also has the same name (__name__). The line graph has no valid column to split series on. The tile can either error, or distinct label sets can merge into one line.
Emit one derived series column that combines the labels, and point the tile at it.

Error message handlers for Cluster Info and Incident Stats: both streams are now hidden, and the custom messages tell the user what to check, which is more useful than the bare 404/403 text.
Use the streams stream for the Overview count tiles:streams is hidden, so tiles built on it can't be re-selected when someone edits them, and the request saving isn't confirmed.

Convert incident dates before metadata evaluation.
Each valueExpression reads the field that it overrides. pipelineHistory.js documents that this same self-reference rendered its date column empty. Incident date columns can therefore render empty even when the API supplies timestamps. Convert the raw fields in a postRequestScript, then remove these expressions. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

If a metric has both name and label_name labels, Line 15 maps both to label_name. One value overwrites the other, so the output loses a label column. Give every label a distinct column name, such as by prefixing all label names. Both names are valid metric labels. (prometheus.io)

Update the labelColumns key mapping so every metric label name receives the same
prefix, rather than prefixing only names in RESERVED; this keeps labels such as
name and label_name in distinct output columns. Preserve each label’s value
under its uniquely mapped column.

Escape label values in the series identifier.
The label sets {a: 'x", b="y'} and {a: "x", b: "y"} both produce a="x", b="y". The Overview graph uses series to separate lines, so these distinct series can merge. Encode each value unambiguously before joining the labels. Prometheus permits quotes and commas in label values. (prometheus.io)

Update the label-value formatting in the series identifier mapping so values
containing quotes or commas cannot collide with distinct label sets; encode each
value unambiguously before joining labels, while preserving the existing label
keys and series construction.

Reject or normalize a trailing slash.
The pattern accepts http://openobserve.example.com/, but metadata.json Line 33 appends the port after the slash. The resulting request targets http://openobserve.example.com/:5080/..., so authentication fails. Reject the slash or remove it before constructing baseUrl. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the OpenObserve URL validation pattern in the ui.json value to reject a
trailing slash, while preserving acceptance of valid HTTP and HTTPS
scheme-and-host URLs.

Allow bracketed IPv6 hosts.
The pattern rejects colons inside valid IPv6 host literals, such as http://[2001:db8::1]. Users with an IPv6-only instance cannot enter its address. Allow bracketed IPv6 hosts while still rejecting a separate port. (rfc-editor.org)

Update the URL validation pattern in the “value” setting to accept bracketed
IPv6 host literals, while retaining HTTP(S) and optional trailing-slash support
and rejecting a separate port.
