Adds the GlobalPullCredential CRD (config.openshift.io/v1alpha1), a
cluster-scoped resource for declaring additional registry pull credentials,
gated behind the new MultiSecretGlobalPullConfig FeatureGate
(DevPreviewNoUpgrade, TechPreviewNoUpgrade).

Each GlobalPullCredential instance declares exactly one registry hostname
with structured username/password credentials (via the RegistryAuth
struct). The controller constructs the base64-encoded Docker config.json
auth token (base64("username:password")) at reconcile time.

A controller in machine-config-controller will watch GlobalPullCredential
instances and merge them with openshift-config/pull-secret into a new,
controller-owned Secret (openshift-config/pull-secret-merged), without
ever modifying the original pull-secret. Cross-CR hostname uniqueness is
enforced by the controller at reconcile time (earliest creationTimestamp wins).

See the enhancement for full design and rationale:
openshift/enhancements#2116

This PR only adds:

  • API types (GlobalPullCredential, GlobalPullCredentialSpec, RegistryAuth, GlobalPullCredentialStatus)
  • Feature gate registration (MultiSecretGlobalPullConfig)
  • Generated code (deepcopy, swagger docs, model names, openapi)
  • CRD manifests (feature-gated + merged + payload)

The controller and consumer changes land in machine-config-operator and
cluster-image-registry-operator in follow-up PRs.

Walkthrough

The changes add and configure the MultiSecretGlobalPullConfig feature gate. They also add the gated, cluster-scoped GlobalPullCredential API, its CRD and scheme registration, and tests for credential creation and updates. The API defines registry hostname and authentication fields, validation constraints, and optional status conditions.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 32dae

The API can accept unusable registry addresses. Correct validation or accept this bounded risk before merging.

Full details: Stable And Deterministic Test Names

Explanation

The pull request adds only static API test names. Titles describe validation behavior, such as missing fields, invalid hostnames, and credential updates. They contain no generated identifiers, timestamps, node or namespace names, IP addresses, UUIDs, or legacy metadata tokens. The fixed phrase host:port is descriptive and deterministic.

Full details: Test Structure And Quality

Explanation

PASS. The PR adds a declarative API test specification, not hand-written Ginkgo It blocks. Each create/update case in MultiSecretGlobalPullConfig.yaml checks one credential behavior, and invalid cases provide specific expectedError text. The shared test generator supplies BeforeEach/AfterEach setup and cleanup and uses the repository timeout for waits. No new cluster operation or indefinite wait is introduced. The ote.Informing() recommendation does not apply because the PR adds no It() block.

Full details: Single Node Openshift (Sno) Test Compatibility

Explanation

The pull request adds one declarative YAML API test file, not new Ginkgo tests. It contains create and update cases for GlobalPullCredential validation and does not use It(), Describe(), Context(), When(), or any multi-node or HA behavior. The SNO-specific check is therefore not applicable.

Full details: Topology-Aware Scheduling Compatibility

Explanation

The pull request adds API types, generated schemas, CRD manifests, feature-gate registration, feature-gate manifests, and API tests. It does not add or modify deployments, operators, controllers, or workload scheduling settings. The diff contains no anti-affinity, topology spread, replica, node selector/affinity, toleration, or PDB changes. Therefore, this topology-aware scheduling check is not applicable.

Full details: Ote Binary Stdout Contract

Explanation

The pull request adds API types, generated code, feature-gate registration, manifests, and YAML API tests. The changed Go additions contain no main, init, TestMain, suite setup, RunSpecs, stdout writes, or logging calls. The feature-gate initializer only registers metadata. The YAML test cases are framework data, not process-level binary code.

Full details: Ipv6 And Disconnected Network Test Compatibility

Explanation

The pull request adds a declarative API test YAML file, not Ginkgo tests with It, Describe, Context, or When. The test only submits Kubernetes objects and validates API responses. quay.io appears as a registry hostname value; the test does not connect to it, pull an image, resolve DNS, or download content. No IPv4-specific networking code is added.

Full details: No-Weak-Crypto

Explanation

The pull request adds API types, validation, feature-gate data, CRD manifests, and generated files. The changed code contains no MD5, SHA-1, DES, 3DES, RC4, Blowfish, ECB, custom cryptography, or secret/token comparisons. The only crypto-related reference is documentation for later base64 encoding of username:password; no encoding implementation is introduced here.

Full details: Container-Privileges

Explanation

PASS: The pull request adds CRDs, API test fixtures, feature-gate data, and generated API files. The changed manifests contain no containers or pod workload definitions, and no added privileged, hostPID, hostNetwork, hostIPC, SYS_ADMIN, allowPrivilegeEscalation, or root-execution settings.

Full details: No-Sensitive-Data-In-Logs

Explanation

No logging was added by this pull request. The changed Go files contain no logger imports or logging calls. Credential values appear only in API definitions, generated schemas, CRD manifests, and test fixtures; no code writes them to logs.

Full details: Microshift Test Compatibility

Explanation

The new declarative suite creates Ginkgo Describe/DescribeTable tests through tests/generator.go. Its cases use config.openshift.io/v1alpha1 GlobalPullCredential resources, but config.openshift.io is unavailable on MicroShift. The suite name is GlobalPullCredential and contains no [apigroup:config.openshift.io] or [Skipped:MicroShift] marker. No MicroShift skip guard exists in the added YAML.

Resolution

Add [apigroup:config.openshift.io] to the suite name in config/v1alpha1/tests/globalpullcredentials.config.openshift.io/MultiSecretGlobalPullConfig.yaml so the generated Describe skips on MicroShift. Alternatively, add [Skipped:MicroShift] or a runtime exutil.IsMicroShiftCluster() guard. MicroShift compatibility notice: This test uses APIs or features that are not available on MicroShift. If this repository's presubmit CI does not already include MicroShift jobs, please verify your test works on MicroShift by running an additional CI job: /payload-job periodic-ci-openshift-microshift-release-4.22-periodics-e2e-aws-ovn-ocp-conformance.

Add MaxItems to conditions.

The field documents only two known condition types, "Applied" and "Degraded". The array has no upper bound, so a status writer can store an unlimited number of entries. Add MaxItems and regenerate the CRD manifest.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Add MaxLength to username and password.

Both fields only set MinLength=1. The API server accepts strings of any length up to the request size limit. The CEL rule !self.contains(':') on username also runs against that unbounded string, so the API server must estimate its cost for the worst-case length.

Set an upper bound on both fields. Use a limit that fits real registry tokens. Then regenerate the CRD manifest.

Nitpick Add an admission case for colon-containing usernames.

Add an admission case for colon-containing usernames.

The current fixtures do not cover the colon restriction. Add a username: user:name case with the expected username must not contain a colon error. Without this case, removing the validation would leave the existing admission tests passing.

Reject malformed registry hostnames at admission.

If a user sets hostname to foo..bar or registry.example.com:99999, this rule accepts the resource. Neither value identifies a usable registry host. Validate each DNS label and constrain an optional port to its valid range. Regenerate the CRD after changing the rule. (rfc-editor.org)

hostname validation is intentional per EP #2116; stricter DNS/port rules are out of scope for v1alpha1.

@Chandan9112 Understood. I withdraw this recommendation because stricter DNS and port validation is outside the intended v1alpha1 scope.

Would you like a follow-up issue for stricter validation?

@Chandan9112 Why shouldn't we have proper hostname + port validation now?

If you want these to always be base64-encoded on serialization, I believe these need to be []byte typed instead of string typed.

I think these should stay strings. The controller base64-encodes username:password when it writes the docker config auth value. A []byte password would encode the password alone.

If both of these fields stay strings, they will not serialize with base64 encoding. So doing a kubectl get globalpullcredentials -o yaml will show the username and password fields in plaintext.

IIRC we wanted these to be treated the same as Secret contents and be base64 encoded?

The controller base64-encodes username:password when it writes the docker config auth value. A []byte password would encode the password alone.

Just to clarify a bit further here, the controller can also read the username and password fields from a []byte type to a string pretty easily to construct the actual base64-encoded concatentation.

The fields here don't need to be strings just for the controller to be able to perform the concatenation.

[]byte would base64-encode each field in kubectl get -o yaml, and the controller could still decode those bytes and build Docker auth as base64(username:password). I think we can keep string because the enhancement stores the plain username and password in the CR. []byte only changes the encoding, and anyone who can get the CR can still read the credential. Protection is RBAC plus etcd encryption, not Secret-style field encoding.
WDYT?

If you feel strongly that that is the best approach, I won't block on it.

I just recall it being explicitly discussed that we should try to follow how Secrets attempt to obscure their contents, which is via base64 encoding.

I agree that it is a bit of security theatre, but it might make end-users a bit more comfortable that there is at least some level of security through obscurity as opposed to none.

I guess I don't see a reason not to base64 encode the user:pass. I get the theater argument, but it seems at worst the same (While maintaining existing semantics) and at best a little better. I don't see the same argument for a string?

We are dropping the Degraded condition right?

How do we determine that this credential has been "Applied"?

Yes, we are dropping Degraded; the only condition is Applied. Applied=True means the controller reconciled that generation (observedGeneration) into openshift-config/pull-secret-merged. If the hostname overlaps the baseline pull-secret, it is still Applied=True and the message says the baseline credential is used. Applied does not mean registry authentication succeeded or that the credential reached the nodes.

Can we ensure that the GoDoc explains the Applied condition and what each state represents? (i.e happy/sad)

Yes correct., I think the GoDoc on status.conditions in config/v1alpha1/types_global_pull_credential.go (lines 83–92) documents Applied for True, False, Unknown/absent, baseline overlap, and that it’s not registry auth or node rollout.

This seems a bit misleading. If there is an overlap with the baseline pull-secret and thus this is not used, it isn't actually applied.

@haircommander , @everettraven. Updated: username and password are now []byte so they serialize as base64, and baseline overlap now reports Applied=False with reason=BaselinePrecedence.
