🔌 Plugin overview

  • Plugin name: ConnectWise Automate (plugins/ConnectWiseAutomate/v1)
  • Purpose / problem solved: Brings ConnectWise Automate (formerly LabTech) RMM data into SquaredUp. It covers agent health (online/offline, last contact, days since contact), maintenance state (reboot needed, maintenance mode, Windows update and antivirus definition age), inventory by client and location, Automate tickets, and network devices. Clients, locations, computers and network devices are imported as objects, so dashboards can drill down from a client to its computers.
  • Primary audience (e.g. platform teams, SREs, product teams): MSPs and IT teams who manage endpoints with ConnectWise Automate. It complements the existing ConnectWise PSA plugin.
  • Authentication method(s) (e.g. OAuth, Username/Password, API Key): Username/password plus a ConnectWise Client ID. The Automate REST API has no API-key or OAuth option. A pre-request script exchanges the credentials for a bearer token at POST /cwa/api/v1/apitoken, caches it for up to 15 minutes, and sends the clientId header that Automate 2020 Patch 11 and later require. The docs recommend an integrator user, because the API sign-in can't complete two-factor authentication.

🧪 Test plan

Tested in a SquaredUp organization with the plugin deployed through the squaredup CLI and a data source added and authenticated.

  • Config validation: the serverInfo connection check passes on save.
  • Sign-in: confirmed the token is cached and reused between requests, and that the plugin signs in again by itself once the token expires. Error handling for a wrong password, a 2FA-only user, a wrong server URL and an unreachable server was checked by running the pre-request script directly. Each case returns a readable error.
  • Import: all four steps (clients, locations, computers, networkDevices) succeed. Page-number paging was checked across several pages with no duplicate or missing objects. Client and location IDs are imported as strings so property filters such as clientId equals "1" match.
  • Data streams: computers, tickets and networkDevices were each tested account-wide and with every filter (client, location, computer, online status, open tickets), each against more than one object. Row counts matched the source data in every case.
  • Dashboards: Overview, Client and Computer perspectives deployed, and their tiles render.
  • squaredup validate passes.

⚠️ Known limitations

  • Not yet verified against a production Automate server. The plugin is built from the documented behaviour of the Automate REST API. Field names for tickets (computer, started and updated dates) and network devices are the least certain, so those two streams also return any extra fields the server sends. Feedback from anyone running Automate is very welcome.
  • Current state only. The REST API returns current values, not history, so the streams have no timeframe.
  • Very large estates. An account-wide Computers tile fetches every matching computer, which may exceed SquaredUp's response size limit with tens of thousands of agents. Filtering by client, location or status keeps it smaller.
  • Tickets can't be filtered by computer yet, only by client.
  • Two-factor authentication isn't supported. An integrator account is needed.
  • Uptime is assumed to be reported in seconds.
  • Read-only. The plugin never changes anything in Automate.

Walkthrough

The pull request adds a ConnectWise Automate plugin with connection setup and token handling, data streams for indexed and live data, object definitions, and Overview, Client, and Computer dashboards.

Changes: ConnectWise Automate plugin

Layer / File(s) Summary
Connection and authentication
.github/CODEOWNERS, plugins/ConnectWiseAutomate/v1/ui.json, plugins/ConnectWiseAutomate/v1/metadata.json, plugins/ConnectWiseAutomate/v1/preRequest.js, plugins/ConnectWiseAutomate/v1/dataStreams/serverInfo.json, plugins/ConnectWiseAutomate/v1/configValidation.json, plugins/ConnectWiseAutomate/v1/docs/README.md
The plugin adds required connection fields and token handling, then validates authentication with a request to the computers endpoint. The documentation describes setup, monitored data, and limitations.
Indexed object definitions and source streams
plugins/ConnectWiseAutomate/v1/custom_types.json, plugins/ConnectWiseAutomate/v1/indexDefinitions/default.json, plugins/ConnectWiseAutomate/v1/dataStreams/clients.json, plugins/ConnectWiseAutomate/v1/dataStreams/locations.json, plugins/ConnectWiseAutomate/v1/dataStreams/computerList.json, plugins/ConnectWiseAutomate/v1/dataStreams/networkDeviceList.json
The plugin defines Client, Location, Computer, and Network Device types and maps their indexed fields. Hidden streams retrieve client, location, computer, and network device records.
Computer, network device, and ticket streams
plugins/ConnectWiseAutomate/v1/dataStreams/computers.json, plugins/ConnectWiseAutomate/v1/dataStreams/networkDevices.json, plugins/ConnectWiseAutomate/v1/dataStreams/tickets.json
The streams add paging, filters, selectors, and metadata for computers, network devices, and tickets. The computer stream computes days since contact; the network device stream computes identifiers and a fallback label.
Scopes and dashboards
plugins/ConnectWiseAutomate/v1/defaultContent/scopes.json, plugins/ConnectWiseAutomate/v1/defaultContent/overview.dash.json, plugins/ConnectWiseAutomate/v1/defaultContent/client.dash.json, plugins/ConnectWiseAutomate/v1/defaultContent/computer.dash.json, plugins/ConnectWiseAutomate/v1/defaultContent/manifest.json
The plugin adds Client and Computer scopes and registers three dashboards. The dashboards show summary counts, charts, and tables for computers, network devices, and tickets.

Include a bounded response excerpt in the login error messages.

The non-2xx branches do not read the response body. The 400 message gives one fixed reason. The fallback message shows only the status code and status text. If Automate returns a reason in the body, such as a validation message or error code, the operator cannot see it. Read the body once, trim it, and limit its length. Append it to each message:

Update the non-2xx response handling in the pre-request flow to read the
response body once, safely handle read failures, trim it, and cap the excerpt at
a bounded length. Append the excerpt when present to each status-specific error
reported through api.report.error, preserving the existing status guidance when
the body is empty or unavailable.

The ExternalID column's valueExpression read its own value, which is
undefined inside the expression, so every ticket's PSA number came back
null. Keep ExternalID as a hidden raw column and add a computed
psaTicketId ("PSA ticket") that reads it, blanking 0 (no PSA ticket).

Minor · Security & Privacy · Quick win

Include the password value in the credential fingerprint.

Two passwords with the same length produce the same fingerprint. If the cached token has not expired, changing the data-source password skips the login request and the authenticated stream continues with the old bearer token. This can delay authentication of the new credentials, or leave requests using a revoked token, until the cache expires.

Suggested fix
-const fingerprint = `v2|${serverUrl}|${username}|${clientId}|${password.length}`;
+const fingerprint = `v2|${serverUrl}|${username}|${clientId}|${password}`;
