DO NOT MERGE: ClusterObjectDeployment and ClusterObjectSet API Review - #3139
OLMv1 ClusterObjectSet and ClusterObjectDeployment API Review
Not intended for merge - for review purposes only.
We are introducing a new API, the ClusterObjectDeployment (COD), above the existing ClusterObjectSet (COS - previously known as ClusterExtensionRevision). This extends the current two-layer architecture (ClusterExtension -> ClusterObjectSet) into a three-layer architecture (ClusterExtension -> ClusterObjectDeployment -> ClusterObjectSet), following the same Deployment -> ReplicaSet -> Pod pattern used in Kubernetes.
The COD layer takes over the revision management responsibilities that currently live in the ClusterExtension controller (template hashing, revision numbering, archival, pruning), letting ClusterExtension focus on resolution and the COS focus on content application. The COS API evolves to use spec-level fields for revision chain identity, inline per-object assertions, and richer phase-level status reporting.
The full enhancement proposal with complete details can be found here.

Details
Needs approval from an approver in each of these files:
Adds the cluster-scoped ClusterObjectSet API for immutable revision specifications, rollout phases, progression probes, and status. Adds the cluster-scoped ClusterObjectDeployment API for template content, revision-history settings, rollout conditions, and status. Both APIs include Kubernetes types, scheme registration, and CRD schemas with validation constraints.
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to d80a0
The new ClusterObjectSet API rejects valid object names in status reporting and valid Secret names and keys in references. Failure details for CRD or RBAC objects could be lost, and conventional Secret names such as bundle.v1 or keys such as manifest.json could not be referenced. Fix the validation markers and regenerate the CRDs before merging. The PR is described as a proposal for review only.

Fix: users can delete and replace phases and progressionProbes.
The rule self == oldSelf || oldSelf.size() == 0 is a transition rule. Kubernetes evaluates a transition rule only when the field exists in both the old and the new object. If an update omits phases, the rule is skipped and the API server accepts the removal. A second update can then add different phases. The rule is skipped again, because oldSelf has no value. The result is that the "immutable" revision content can be replaced in two updates. progressionProbes has the same gap.
The file already handles this problem for completedAt at Line 511-515. It adds a guard on the parent struct. Apply the same pattern on ClusterObjectSetSpec.
progressDeadlineMinutes (Line 126) has no immutability rule at all. The type doc at Line 791 calls a revision an "immutable snapshot". Confirm whether this field may stay mutable.
The oldSelf.size() == 0 branch also does not match the "Once set, even if empty" doc text. omitempty drops an empty list, and progressionProbes has MinItems=1. An empty value therefore never persists.
🔒 Proposed fix: add removal guards on the spec

These fields lack omitempty as setting them to 0, a valid value, removes them from the struct then gives errors since they're required. This seems like a situation where we'd need to use pointers, but I'd like to hear from the API team on that.
We'll be making these pointers with omitempty.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
If I am understanding the behaviors in the EP correctly, "rolled back to" actually means "template can be set to the contents of an earlier ClusterObjectSet, which will create a new revision that applies the same contents a previous ClusterObjectSet applied".

Assuming you are using kube-api-linter in the upstream, I'd also suggest removing the nolint:kubeapilinter because it causes no linting to be done on this field.
Instead, I'd suggest updating the linter configuration to ignore the specific linting error you'd like to ignore for this field.

Why a minimum of 10 minutes? Do we expect roll out of this to always be on the order of minutes? Are there no use cases for this API where roll out could take under a minute?
Deployment's for example have a progressDeadlineSeconds field.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
This was grandfathered in from the existing (and potentially reviewed) ClusterObjectSet API. I don't have have super strong opinions on moving the minimum down to 1 min. Having said that, there is a difference between Deployments progress deadline and ours here. Deployment resets the clock after every progression, the ClusterObjectDeployment is measuring the time until the ClusterObjectSet becomes ready. Arguably we should may change this field to ReadyDeadlineMinutes or something like that. But, we're also discussing internally whether we should move to the Deployment style definition, and every time a phase completes, we reset the clock. But, we won't get to that this release cycle. Would nerfing it down to 1 minute be sufficient for this round. Then, by GA, we'll have an answer on the behavior we want and we can also rename the field by then depending on where we land.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Decreasing the minimum is generally an OK change - my specific concern is around the unit though. Is "minutes" a sufficiently small enough unit here?
If you need to change the unit, you need to rename the field entirely which is a breaking change.
If these APIs aren't going GA yet and you can still make that breaking change before going GA - I'm OK with that. Please make it an explicit GA promotion item that you have an explicit evaluation as to whether or not minutes is the most appropriate unit.

it gives users a summary of the state of the objects in phase. It answers the questions: how many objects are in the phase (which is certainly deducible from the .spec but that's not particularly ergonomic) and how many objects are in different states:
created: have been created/exist on the cluster
synced: are at the desired spec
ready: are at the desired state (spec + status via probes)
so the intent it to give a first glance summary of the state of the objects in the phase for the case where the user is either tracking the deployment progress or debugging a stuck deployment.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Sure, but how are we expecting end-users to use the explicit counts? would it be more beneficial for users if each state had a list of identifiers for objects that are in that state?
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Given that its such a spec heavy object, we're trying to be frugal wrt how much space we use up in the status. Ultimately, we'd like individual object status to always be derivable from .spec and .status + while being loud about problematic objects. E.g. if 5/5 objects are ready then we don't need a line item for each one in the status. If 4/5 are ready this is usually because of probe failure or object collision, so call that out. But we'll probably still iterate over this area.

I'm not opinionated on inlining versus a named field for it, but the only field that looks potentially additional here would maybe be observed generation?
Otherwise you basically replicate every other condition field.
This was mostly just a suggestion - if you folks feel strongly that a condition/conditions style reporting mechanism isn't the best fit for the purposes of this API, the current shape seems pretty reasonable.

Fix: ref.name and ref.key reject valid Secret names and data keys.
name (Line 492) uses format.dns1123Label(). Secret names are DNS subdomains, so names like bundle.v1-manifests are rejected. The rule also limits the name to 63 characters, which makes MaxLength=253 unreachable.
key (Line 511) uses format.dns1123Label(). Secret data keys can contain uppercase letters, ., _ and -. Common keys like object.json or manifest_0 are rejected.
Callers who write Secrets with these conventional names and keys cannot reference them from a revision. The same generated schema appears in clusterobjectdeployment/olm.operatorframework.io_clusterobjectdeployments.yaml.yaml Line 218-243. Regenerate the CRDs after the fix.

Fix: objectDetails[].name rejects valid object names, such as CRD names.
The name rule uses format.dns1123Label(). That format rejects dots and values longer than 63 characters. Many managed objects have names that are valid DNS subdomains but not DNS labels:
Every CustomResourceDefinition name contains dots, for example foos.example.com. CRDs are a documented phase in spec.phases.
Many ClusterRole and ClusterRoleBinding names contain dots or colons.
The field doc says "Must be between 1 and 253 characters (DNS subdomain max)", but the rule does not match that doc. If such an object fails a probe or collides, the controller adds it to objectDetails. The API server then rejects the whole status update. As a result, the controller cannot report status for the revision. Phase status, objectCounts, and the Ready condition stay stale at the moment the user needs the failure details.
objectDetails is diagnostic output, so do not enforce the naming format here. Keep the length bounds and remove the format rule. Do not substitute a strict DNS-subdomain rule, because RBAC names with colons would still fail it. namespace at Line 716-718 is correct as a DNS label, but its MaxLength=253 and its doc conflict with the 63-character label limit.
