Should case repair write St Clair and San Martín with their capital? JOHN ST CLAIR repairs to John st Clair #1069

Closed

Description

@derek73

rules/R4 writes a particle doing a particle's work in lowercase, unless the vocabulary records a casing for it (#604). The saint particles (st, ste, san, santa) and the rank freiherr have no recorded casing, so every repaired spelling lowercases them, though nobody writes a saint surname or a German rank that way:

input capitalized() today
JOHN ST CLAIR John st Clair
JOHN ST. CLAIR John st. Clair
JEAN ST-PIERRE Jean st-Pierre
ST AMAND, CHRISTOPHER Christopher st Amand
PIERRE STE MARIE Pierre ste Marie
JOSE SAN MARTIN Jose san Martin
MARIA SANTA CRUZ Maria santa Cruz
MANFRED FREIHERR VON RICHTHOFEN Manfred freiherr von Richthofen
Manfred Freiherr von Richthofen, force=True Manfred freiherr von Richthofen

A mixed-case name is left alone without force, so only the one-case and forced paths show it. Measured on master (c620754), 2026-11-04.

Proposal, in rule shape

When: case repair writes a particle that is a saint word (the saint kind: san, santa, st, ste) or a rank (freiherr, freiherrin).

Then: it is written with a capital (St, Ste, San, Santa, Freiherr), as a cased mask on the word writes it. The mechanism is the one #604 used for the Irish particles.

Because: these words are particles because they join the surname behind them, not because they are written lowercase. A saint surname (St Clair, San Martín, Santa Cruz) and a German rank written inside the surname (Freiherr von Richthofen) are capitalized in every convention that writes them.

    Since #1064 (#709) the new ranks lowercase the same way, measured on master dadf39b: OTTO GRAF LAMBSDORFF repairs to Otto graf Lambsdorff.

    Kept on 3.0 for the ranks: #1064 made Graf, Gräfin, Fürst and Prinz particles, and case repair now lowercases them, where 2.8.0 did not (OTTO GRAF LAMBSDORFF repairs to Otto Graf Lambsdorff under the 2.8.0 wheel, Otto graf Lambsdorff on master dadf39b). st, san and freiherr were already lowercased in 2.8.0.
