docs(design): async origin capture for stackless rejections (BGSVIEWER-14) - #175
BGSVIEWER-14 is an unhandled NotSupportedError: The element has no supported sources. with zero frames. Measured in headless Chromium 156 and Firefox 151 (docs/design/async-origin-capture/probe.mjs): platform promises that fail asynchronously reject with no stack in Chromium (and fewer in Firefox); user-code Error rejections already carry stacks, so the global Promise needs no patching. The doc lists the measured stackless set, the 177 candidate methods from lib.dom.d.ts, a generic call-site wrapper (with the unhandledrejection-preserving derived-promise trap), costs/risks, and a plan.

Summary
Summary by CodeRabbit
Documentation
Added design documentation describing browser differences in asynchronous rejection stacks, candidate APIs, and a proposed approach for capturing call-site origins.
Documented edge cases, compatibility and performance considerations, testing plans, and unresolved platform questions. No runtime behavior changes are included.
Chores
Added browser-based tools to measure promise performance and inspect how different browsers report synchronous errors and unhandled rejections.
The PR adds a design document for capturing call-site origins of stackless asynchronous rejections. It also adds a Playwright probe that records rejection behavior across browser APIs and a benchmark that measures promise-wrapper and error-stack costs. The design document describes proposed capture behavior and related crash-pipeline changes. No implementation of the proposed design is included.

Review of PR #175: async origin capture design (BGSVIEWER-14)
This is a docs-only PR (a design doc and a probe script), so nothing was executed. I read both files and checked the doc's claims against packages/core/src/crash.ts and client.ts. I did not re-run the probe, so the browser measurements are taken as stated.

Findings (inline)
P2 (async-origin-capture.md:153): the planned reuse of the syntheticFrames seam won't work for the target bug. The seam is only honoured when !(error instanceof Error), and a DOMException is an Error. The plan needs to extend the Error branch of buildCrashJson so it falls back to the remembered origin when the parsed frames are empty.
P3 (:152): the "has usable frames" regex treats any @ in the message as a frame, so the origin is dropped for stackless errors whose message contains @. Use parseStack instead.
P3 (:48): structuredClone is synchronous and its failure is a lost async stack, not a platform-API origin. The wrapper can't fix it, but it sits in the table the wrapper is meant to fix. There is also a small inconsistency between ".stack is undefined" (§1) and "absent or only Name: message" (§2).
P3 (probe.mjs:3): the script hard-codes the author's local absolute path, so it isn't reproducible. Its frame-counting regex can also overcount.
Summary
Overall risk: Low. There is no behaviour change, and the findings are about the accuracy of the design.
Merge recommendation: Approve after fixing finding 1 in the doc. Findings 2–4 can be fixed in the same pass or deferred.
Most important to fix: the instanceof Error gap in the seam (finding 1), because it would leave the original frames: [] bug unfixed if the plan were implemented as written.
Positives:
The measurement-first approach is useful, with a clear per-engine table.
The derived-promise trap that preserves unhandledrejection is called out.
The cost and risk section is honest.
Drift test and e2e are planned.
Not patching the global Promise is the right call.
keeps the app's promise the one that is unhandled, with the **same reason object**, so a `WeakMap<reason, origin>` finds it.
- `remember` stores only when the reason is an object **without usable frames** (`!/\n\s+at |@/.test(stack)`): nothing is retained for a rejection that already has a stack.
- The origin is attached at the two consumers that read a thrown value: the `unhandledrejection` provider and `captureException`/`crashOf`, via the existing `syntheticFrames` seam in `buildCrashJson` (`packages/core/src/crash.ts:114`). Frames are tagged as originating at the call ("async origin") so the viewer can say so.

Severity: P2 Medium Problem: The plan says to attach the origin via the existing syntheticFrames seam in buildCrashJson (packages/core/src/crash.ts:114). That seam does not apply to the case this doc is about. buildCrashJson (crash.ts:~334) only reaches syntheticException(..., options.syntheticFrames, ...) when !(error instanceof Error). The seam's own doc comment says "Ignored for a real Error, which has its own". client.ts:1757 likewise only builds syntheticFrames for non-Errors. Impact: The BGSVIEWER-14 reason is a DOMException. §1 calls it "a genuine Error", and in Chromium and Firefox DOMException.prototype inherits from Error.prototype. So with the seam as written, step 3 of the plan would still ship frames: [] for the very bug that triggered the doc. Scenario:video.play() rejects with a stackless NotSupportedError. The async-origin map has an entry for it. buildCrashJson takes the instanceof Error branch and parses an empty/absent stack, so frames is [], and the origin is never consulted. Fix: Say explicitly that the Error branch must be extended. When the parsed frames are empty, fall back to the remembered origin frames. This must also go through enrichFrames/toCrashFrame. Alternatively, add a separate originFrames option that applies to Errors. Also add a unit test for "Error with no frames + remembered origin" to the plan.
app. A side branch (`p.then(noop, record)`) would silently disable detection. Returning the derived promise (which re-throws)
keeps the app's promise the one that is unhandled, with the **same reason object**, so a `WeakMap<reason, origin>` finds it.
- `remember` stores only when the reason is an object **without usable frames** (`!/\n\s+at |@/.test(stack)`): nothing is retained for a rejection that already has a stack.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Severity: P3 Low Problem: The "has usable frames" test !/\n\s+at |@/.test(stack) treats any @ anywhere in the stack as a frame. A stackless Chromium DOMException has a stack that is only the Name: message header. If the message contains @ (an email address, a URL with credentials, a @font-face or @media rule, a package scope like @scope/pkg), the reason is classified as already located. remember then skips it and the origin is lost. FontFace.load/FontFaceSet.load errors, for example, can mention @font-face. Fix: Don't use a regex. Reuse the multi-engine parseStack already used by the provider (packages/browser/src/stack.ts) and record the origin when it returns 0 frames. That is the same definition the report builder will use, so the two can't disagree.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Severity: P3 Low Problem: The structuredClone row (and arguably the WebAssembly.* row) is listed in the "stackless set" the wrapper is meant to fix. But structuredClone is a synchronous function (the doc says so in §3). The wrapper in §4 only decorates promise-returning methods, so it cannot supply an origin for it. The measured case is a throw inside a user .then callback that loses its user frame across the microtask boundary. That is an async-stack-trace problem, not a platform-API origin problem, and it also affects user code that throws in a .then. Impact: The table overstates what the design covers. A reader will assume the wrapper fixes these rows, and the e2e in §5 ("for each default API … assert an origin frame") can't be written for them. Fix: Move these rows into a separate "not addressed by the wrapper" note, or drop them. Also, §1 says the DOMException .stack "is undefined", while the §2 header says "absent or only Name: message". Pick the measured truth per engine.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Severity: P3 Low Problem: The script hard-codes an absolute path on one developer's machine (/Volumes/External2TB/Projects/Bugsee/javascript/...) to resolve playwright. It can't run for anyone else or in CI, which undermines the reproducibility the doc relies on (§5 says it is "turned into assertions" later). Fix: Resolve playwright relative to the repo, e.g. createRequire(new URL('../../../packages/instrumentation-tests/package.json', import.meta.url)). Alternatively, use a plain import('playwright'), and note the invocation in the doc.
Smaller points on the probe's measurement logic:
The frame-counting regex /^\s*at\s|@|:\d+:\d+/ also matches the header line when the message contains @ or :N:N, so it can overcount frames for stackless errors.
mentionsCallsite is computed but not used by the "frames" column.
Re-review of PR #175: async origin capture design (BGSVIEWER-14)
This push added §4's "one factory" section and bench.mjs. It is still docs and scripts only. I read both files and checked the doc against packages/core/src/crash.ts and packages/browser/src/detection-providers.ts. I did not run the probe or the bench, so the browser measurements are taken as stated.

Earlier findings: none fixed yet
The two new commits only added the factory and bench sections, so these still apply:
P2async-origin-capture.md:153: the syntheticFrames seam is ignored for Error instances, and DOMException is one (crash.ts:333).
P3:152: the @ in the has-frames regex.
P3:47-48: the structuredClone and WebAssembly rows aren't addressed by the wrapper.
P3probe.mjs:3: hard-coded local path.
New findings (inline)
P3bench.mjs:3: the same hard-coded /Volumes/... path. The §4 overhead table, which is the main argument for default ON, can't be reproduced, and PW_firefox isn't documented.
P3async-origin-capture.md:207 (plan step 3): describeError (browser/src/detection-providers.ts:28-38) builds the report description from value.stack, separately from crash.json. Fixing only buildCrashJson leaves the description without a location. Route both through one helper and test that they agree.
P3async-origin-capture.md:153: "frames tagged as async origin" has no wire field. CrashFrame (crash.ts:12-30) has no marker, and no plan step touches the protocol schema or says how grouping treats origin frames. I did not check the worker, which is outside this repo.
Summary
Overall risk: Low. The PR changes no behaviour, so the risk is that the design misleads the implementation.
Merge recommendation: Fine to merge as a design doc once the P2 instanceof Error gap is written into the plan. Otherwise the plan, implemented as written, would still ship frames: [] for BGSVIEWER-14.
Most important to fix:
The Error branch of buildCrashJson must fall back to the remembered origin (:153).
Define the wire marker and grouping behaviour for origin frames before step 2 (:153).
Use parseStack rather than the regex to decide a reason is stackless (:152).
Cover describeError and the description in step 3 (:207).
Positives:
Measurement comes first, and the new bench quantifies the cost.
The derived-promise trap is handled correctly.
The factory-versus-hand-written comparison is a fair control.
The unmeasured items (WebKit, memory, microtask order) are listed openly.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Severity: P3 Low Problem:bench.mjs has the same hard-coded /Volumes/External2TB/... path as probe.mjs:3 (already reported there). It is also a new file in this push, so the fix needs to cover both. Impact: The §4 overhead table (the main justification for "default ON") can't be reproduced by anyone else, and nothing in the doc says how to run it. It also reads PW_firefox from the environment without documenting it. Fix: Resolve playwright relative to the repo (createRequire(new URL('../../../packages/instrumentation-tests/package.json', import.meta.url))), and add a one-line "how to run" with the PW_firefox variable to the doc. Both scripts can share one helper.
1. **Table + generator + drift test** (no behaviour change).
2. **`async-origin` interceptor in `@bugsee/capture`** (browser-only, runtime-portable shell; installs/uninstalls the wrappers; option `captureAsyncOrigins`, default ON for the measured set).
3. **Consume it** in the browser/webworker/electron-renderer `unhandledrejection` providers and in `captureException`.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Severity: P3 Low Problem: Step 3 only covers the crash.json path, but the browser unhandledrejection provider builds the report text separately. describeError (packages/browser/src/detection-providers.ts:28-38) builds description from value.stack. For a stackless Chromium DOMException this is just Name: message or absent, so formatStack(parseStack(...)) is empty. onDetected (:142-151) then passes both description and crash into the report. Impact: If only buildCrashJson gets the origin, crash.json will have frames while the report description still has none. The two views of the same error disagree, and anything reading the description (notifications, UI) still shows no location. Fix: Say in step 3 that describeError and crashOf both read the origin through one helper (originOf(reason)), and add a test that the description and crash.json carry the same origin frames.
keeps the app's promise the one that is unhandled, with the **same reason object**, so a `WeakMap<reason, origin>` finds it.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Severity: P3 Low (separate from the instanceof Error finding above) Problem: "Frames are tagged as originating at the call ('async origin') so the viewer can say so" has no wire representation. CrashFrame (packages/core/src/crash.ts:12-30) has trace, user, data, debug_id, hidden, variables and context, and no origin marker. The plan in §7 has no step for adding one to the protocol, upload-contract.schema.json, or the worker. §7 step 5 only mentions the viewer repo. Impact: crash.json is a cross-platform contract that the backend reads without the SDK. Untagged origin frames look identical to real throw-site frames. They will take part in grouping and symbolication, and they point at the wrapper's caller rather than where the failure happened. For frames: [] reports the grouping location changes as soon as frames appear. I did not check the worker, which is outside this repo, so the doc should state the intended grouping behaviour. Fix: Add a plan step to define the marker (for example a per-exception origin: 'async' flag, or hidden plus a tag) in the schema and spec first, per the repo's contract rules. Also state whether origin frames count toward the grouping location.
Re-review of PR #175: async origin capture design (BGSVIEWER-14)
This push added the "which listed methods can sit in a tight loop" class table and the adaptive circuit breaker. The PR is still docs and scripts only. I read the new sections and checked the claim about the SDK's own calls against packages/util, packages/browser-utils and packages/trackers. I did not run the probe or the bench, so the browser measurements are taken as stated.
Earlier findings, none fixed in this push (see the existing inline comments):
P2: the syntheticFrames seam is ignored for Error instances, and a DOMException is one (:153).
P3: the has-frames regex treats any @ as a frame (:152).
P3: the structuredClone and WebAssembly rows can't be fixed by the wrapper (:47-48).
P3:describeError isn't covered by the plan (:229).
P3: the "async origin" tag has no wire field (:153).
P3:probe.mjs and bench.mjs hard-code /Volumes/External2TB/..., so they can't be reproduced.
New findings (inline)
P3 (async-origin-capture.md:184): "the SDK's own code is not affected" is incomplete. The SDK calls crypto.subtle.digest (util/src/sha256.ts:33), response.arrayBuffer() (browser-utils/src/fetch-transport.ts:57) and StorageManager.estimate/persisted (trackers/src/browser/storage-tracker.ts:26-27). These would share the app's per-method breaker budget and pay the capture cost. The wrappers should be bypassed for SDK-internal calls.
P3 (:194-198): the breaker's "one increment and one comparison / 0.2 µs" omits the window mechanism (a clock read or a timer). It isn't in bench.mjs, and the rejection path isn't benchmarked. The new class and breaker design is also not reflected in cost-and-risk item 1 (denyHot) or in plan step 2.
Summary
Overall risk: Low. There is no behaviour change, and the risk is that the design misleads the implementation.
Merge recommendation: Fine to merge as a design doc once the P2 instanceof Error gap from the earlier review is written into the plan.
Most important to fix:
The Error branch of buildCrashJson must fall back to the remembered origin (:153).
Define the wire marker and grouping behaviour for origin frames.
Exempt SDK-internal calls from the wrappers and the breaker.
Measure the breaker and reconcile the plan with the class table.
Positives:
The breaker is a sensible answer to "frequency is a property of the app, not the API".
The class table is explicit about which methods are on or off by default.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Severity: P3 Low Problem: The claim that the SDK's own code is not affected is incomplete. Besides read() and a per-bundle blob.arrayBuffer(), the SDK itself calls several methods on the wrap list:
crypto.subtle.digest in packages/util/src/sha256.ts:33, which is SubtleCrypto.*, listed as "hot in bulk".
await response.arrayBuffer() in packages/browser-utils/src/fetch-transport.ts:57 (a Body.* method).
navigator.storage.estimate() and persisted() in packages/trackers/src/browser/storage-tracker.ts:26-27 (StorageManager.*).
Impact:
Counters and breaker state are "per wrapped method", so the SDK's own digest and body reads spend the app's budget. A bundle upload hashing many chunks could trip the breaker for digest, and a later app failure of that method would then lose its call site.
The SDK pays the capture cost on its own calls.
A stackless rejection of the SDK's own call is recorded in the WeakMap for no reason.
Fix: Say that the SDK's internal calls must bypass the wrappers, either by capturing the pre-patch native reference at module load or by a re-entrancy flag. Add a test for that to plan step 2. Also correct the sentence to match what the SDK actually calls.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Severity: P3 Low Problem: The breaker's cost ("one increment and one comparison") and its "0.2 µs" figure leave out how the 1 s window is kept. Either every call reads a clock (performance.now()/Date.now()), or a timer resets the counters. Neither is in the measured numbers. bench.mjs has no breaker variant, and it never exercises the rejection path (only resolved digest calls).
Impact:
The "tight loop pays the capture price for its first few hundred calls only" conclusion and the default-ON recommendation rest on an unmeasured component.
The clock read, or an always-armed timer, is a real cost on exactly the hot paths the breaker protects.
A per-method timer would also have to be released on stop().
A per-call clock read in Chromium and Firefox is not free (timer-precision mitigations).
Fix: Pick the window mechanism in the doc. A lazy window is the usual choice: compare a coarse clock read on every Nth call, or use a call-count window. Add the breaker to bench.mjs and report the measured cost, instead of "about 0.2 µs".
Related:
The new class table and breaker are not reflected in the rest of the doc. Cost-and-risk item 1 (:204) still says "default set and a denyHot list; the rest is opt-in".
§7 plan step 2 (:228) has no breaker, per-API opt-in or per-class option.
That leaves the factory's options shape (hot?, capture, sampling) and the user-facing captureAsyncOrigins option inconsistent. Please reconcile them in one place.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Stale comment
Deep review — async origin capture design (BGSVIEWER-14)
Docs only; no runtime change. The diagnosis is right: HTMLMediaElement.play() (and similar platform async failures) reject from a media/C++ task with a real DOMException whose .stack is missing, so nothing at detection time can recover a call site. The wrapper shape — call-time new Error(), return the derived promise that rethrows — matches the existing fetch interceptor (packages/capture/src/fetch-interceptor.ts:387-433) and correctly preserves unhandledrejection. Not patching the global Promise is the right call. The generator + drift test + real-browser e2e plan is the right honesty mechanism.
The consumption path as specified would not fix BGSVIEWER-14. That has to be corrected before this doc is used as the implementation spec.
Findings
P1 — syntheticFrames is ignored for real Errors, and the motivating report is a real Error
buildCrashJson only consults syntheticFrames on the !(error instanceof Error) branch (packages/core/src/crash.ts:332-355). A tested invariant forbids putting them on an Error (crash.test.ts:187-193: “does NOT put synthetic frames on a real Error — it has its own”). logException independently sets syntheticFrames to undefined whenever error instanceof Error (packages/core/src/client.ts:1757-1759). There is no captureException (removed in design v3; the public API is logException).
BGSVIEWER-14’s reason is NotSupportedError / DOMException, which is an Error. Plumbing the WeakMap origin in through syntheticFrames is a silent no-op: crash.json.exception.frames stays [], and the worker still has no grouping location (crash.ts cites worker/crash/managed/common.py:88).
The same consumers also drop the human-readable stack: describeError in packages/browser/src/detection-providers.ts:28-37 returns { summary } with no description when !value.stack. Even a future crash.json fix would leave request.json.description empty unless that path is specified too.
The seam that already runs on Error objects is enrichFrames (receives the error plus whatever parseStack produced — [] when .stack is missing). Node’s crashOf already threads it for this reason (packages/node/src/detection-providers.ts:39-52); browser crashOf does not.
P2 — remember() treats any engine frame as “usable”, so two measured rows stay unfixed
The predicate !/ \s+at |@/.test(stack) refuses to store an origin as soon as the reason has any at/@ line. §2 lists WebAssembly.compile/instantiate and structuredClone as Chromium “1 frame, no user frame”. Those stacks match the regex, so origin is dropped and the report still has no call site. structuredClone is also a sync throw, not a thenable; the generic wrapper returns p unchanged (or lets the throw escape) and never reaches remember.
P2 — default set and denyHot both claim Body.*
§2 measures Body.json as stackless on Firefox. §7.2 defaults ON for the measured set. §4 cost #1 puts Blob/Body.* on denyHot. One of those three statements has to give, or the Firefox json() case either stays broken or every Response#arrayBuffer/text/json pays new Error() + an extra promise.
P2 — “async origin” has no wire field; hidden would undo grouping
CrashFrame / StackFrame have no origin/kind tag. toCrashFrame is a closed allow-list (crash.ts:141-168), so a tag left only on StackFrame is dropped. The only existing “not a real throw site” flag is hidden, which the worker skips when picking the crash location (crash.ts:17-20). Marking origin frames hidden would leave BGSVIEWER-14 ungrouped again. Viewer distinction needs a new optional field that grouping ignores; until then, origin frames must be ordinary visible user frames.
Residual (not blocking)
probe.mjscreateRequires a hardcoded /Volumes/External2TB/... path, so the measured table cannot be re-run from this checkout. Plan §5 depends on turning that probe into e2e assertions.
WebKit is unmeasured (already an open question). Default-ON wrapping of play()/clipboard/getUserMedia should stay gated until a matching Playwright WebKit build exists.
Electron renderer is covered if the interceptor is installed from @bugsee/browserlaunchCore; no separate electron-renderer provider is required.
Overall risk: Medium
Docs-only, so this does not break production. Implementing the doc as written would ship the wrappers and still upload frames: [] for the bug that triggered the work.
Merge recommendation: Request changes
Most important to fix before this becomes the implementation spec:
Consume origin via enrichFrames (and describeError) on empty-stack Errors, not syntheticFrames.
Define “usable frames” as a user/call-site frame, not any engine line; handle sync stackless throws separately or drop them from the default set.
Resolve Body.json (default vs denyHot) and add a crash.json field if the viewer is expected to render origin frames distinctly.
Did not run the in-tree probe (host-absolute Playwright path). Read buildCrashJson / logException / browser+node detection providers / fetch interceptor against the doc.
- The wrapper frame itself is dropped from the captured stack.
### One factory for every method, and what it costs (measured)
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
P2 — default set and denyHot both claim Body.*.
§2 measures Body.json as stackless on Firefox. §7.2 defaults ON for the measured set. This bullet puts Blob/Body.* on denyHot.
If denyHot wins, the Firefox Response#json case that justified inclusion stays frames: []. If the measured set wins, every arrayBuffer/text/json/blob on Request/Response pays new Error() plus a derived promise — the hot-path cost this list exists to avoid.
Fix: pick one. Either Body.json (and maybe text) is default-on and the rest of Body.* is deny/opt-in, or it is denyHot and §2/§7.2 stop calling it part of the default set.
Docs and measurement scripts only — no production behaviour change. I checked the plan against packages/core/src/crash.ts, packages/core/src/client.ts (logException / describeError), packages/core/src/crash.test.ts (syntheticFrames is ignored for a real Error), packages/browser/src/detection-providers.ts, and the existing fetch wrapper in packages/capture/src/fetch-interceptor.ts. I did not re-run probe.mjs / bench.mjs (both hard-code a host-absolute Playwright path).
Findings
P1 — syntheticFrames cannot attach origin frames to BGSVIEWER-14. The reason is a DOMException (Error); that seam is ignored for Errors. describeError and logException have the same gap, and there is no captureException.
P2 — remember's "usable frames" regex treats any engine frame (and any @ in the message) as located, so the WASM / 1-frame rows never get an origin.
P2 — Default-on measured set and denyHot both claim Body.* / Body.json.
P2 — createImageBitmap is default-on because it is stackless, then placed on the hot list whose breaker turns origin capture off in the frame-rate loops that justified calling it hot.
Overall risk: Low
No runtime change. The risk is treating this doc as the implementation spec.
Merge recommendation: Request changes
Fix the P1 seam in the plan before this is the spec for step 2/3. Resolve the three P2s in the same pass so the default set is internally consistent.
Most important to fix
Empty-stack Error fallback (enrichFrames, or extend the Error branch). Same helper for describeError / logException. Drop the captureException name.
Define "usable" via parseStack (user/call-site frames, not "any at/@").
One owner for Body.json.
Do not default-on createImageBitmap if the breaker will disable it on the hot path.
Do not mark origin frames hidden — the worker skips hidden when picking the grouping location, which would restore frames: [] grouping for BGSVIEWER-14.
Positives
Measurement-first, with a Chromium/Firefox split and WebKit called out as unmeasured.
The derived-promise trap is correct and matches the existing fetch interceptor (call.then(..., err => { …; throw error })).
Not patching the global Promise is the right call.
One factory + drift test + real-browser e2e is the maintainable shape.
Overhead was actually measured, including a hand-written control.

Severity: P2 Medium
Problem: Default set and denyHot both claim Body.*.
§2 measures Body.json as stackless on Firefox.
Plan step 2 (:228) defaults ON for the measured set.
This row puts Blob.arrayBuffer/bytes/text and Body.* (including response.json() per request) as off (opt-in).
Cost-and-risk item 1 (:204) repeats a denyHot list that includes Blob/Body.*.
Impact: If denyHot wins, the Firefox Response#json case that justified inclusion stays frames: []. If the measured set wins, every arrayBuffer / text / json / blob on Request/Response pays new Error() plus a derived promise — the hot-path cost this table exists to avoid. Wrapping the whole mixin also intercepts the SDK's own response.arrayBuffer() in packages/browser-utils/src/fetch-transport.ts:57 on every upload.
Scenario: Implementer A wraps only the §2 measured set → Body.json is on, chatty apps hit the breaker, uploads go through a wrapped arrayBuffer if they took the mixin. Implementer B follows this table → Firefox invalid-JSON rejections stay stackless. The drift test cannot decide this for them.
Fix: Pick one. Either Body.json (maybe text) is default-on and the rest of Body.* is deny/opt-in, or it is denyHot and §2 / step 2 stop calling it part of the default set. Reconcile this with captureAsyncOrigins in one place — step 2 still has no breaker, per-API opt-in, or per-class option.
Re-review of PR #175: async origin capture design (BGSVIEWER-14), v2
This push rewrote §4 into a two-mode wrapper with an enrichFrames seam and arm-on-first-failure gating. It is still docs and scripts only. I read the full doc and checked its claims against packages/core/src/crash.ts, debug-id.ts, client.ts, and the browser and node detection-providers.ts. I did not run the probe or the bench, so the browser measurements are taken as stated.
Earlier findings now fixed in the doc
The syntheticFrames seam is replaced by enrichFrames (§4.5), and the cited line numbers match the code. Both Cursor reviews and the earlier P2 raised this.
describeError and the handled logException path are covered in §4.5.
The rate breaker is replaced by arm-on-first-failure (§4.4).
The SDK-wide @-regex is removed. See "usable frames" below, which is still open.
Still open from earlier reviews
The wire marker for origin frames is acknowledged only as an open question (§8). It must be decided before step 4.
The SDK's own calls to wrapped methods are not exempted: crypto.subtle.digest, response.arrayBuffer() and StorageManager.estimate. The doc line :255-257 is still wrong about this.
The structuredClone and WebAssembly rows are still listed as covered by the wrapper.
Body.json and createImageBitmap are still contradictory between the measured set and the hot list.
probe.mjs and bench.mjs still hard-code /Volumes/... paths.
New findings (inline)
P2 (:216): origin frames returned by enrichFrames never get a debug_id, because applyDebugIds runs before enrichment (crash.ts:202 vs :206). A minified call site would be unsymbolicatable. Also unclear is how the SDK wrapper frame is stripped on Firefox and Safari, which lack captureStackTrace.
P2 (:200-202): "armed after its first rejection" has no mechanism. Observing a rejection requires attaching a reaction, which is the §4.1 trap. As written the gate is circular or never fires, and the first failure of the measured rows (decode, FontFace.load, addIceCandidate) is lost by design.
P2 (:261-272): the v2 rewrite left the old policy next to the new one. The table still says off, opt-in and "see breaker", and cost-and-risk item 1 still describes denyHot. There are now three incompatible policies and the options shape cannot be derived.
P3 (:223): §10 is referenced three times but does not exist. The doc ends at §9.
P3 (:175-180):
"usable frames" is now undefined.
The bench does not measure the proposed new Error() plus captureStackTrace combination.
Patched-then mode retains the origin and target until the promise is GC'd, not until it settles.
P3 (:312): step 6 ignores the spec-first rule for system event names in CLAUDE.md (system-names.ts, spec:refresh, drift test).
P3 (probe.mjs:3): the repo-relative path fix is still missing. Several §4.1-§4.2 numbers come from scripts that are not in the PR.
Summary
Overall risk: Low. There is no behaviour change. The risk is that the design misleads the implementation.
Merge recommendation: Fine to merge as a design doc once the P2 items are fixed in the text, or tracked as open questions: the debug-id gap, the arming mechanism and the single gating policy.
Most important to fix:
Specify how the origin frames get debug_id, and how the wrapper frame is stripped on non-V8 engines.
Define the arming trigger without a reaction, or keep the measured-stackless rows always-on.
Reconcile the table, cost-and-risk and §4.4 into one always/armed/off policy.
Add the missing §10, or drop the references.
Positives:
The v2 revision responds to review and measures its claims, including the zone.js regression.
The two-mode wrapper is a good answer to the derived-promise trap.
Keeping this as the root-cause signal (§4.3) is a real improvement for play().
The enrichFrames seam is the right one and matches how node already threads it.

Severity: P2 Medium
Problem: Origin frames returned by an enrichFrames enricher never get a debug_id. In buildException, applyDebugIds(parsed, …) runs on the parsed array first (packages/core/src/crash.ts:202), and only then enrichFrames(error, parsed) (:206). applyDebugIds stamps frames by matching their file against the page's debug-id map (debug-id.ts:57-68). Frames the enricher adds afterwards skip that step.
Impact: The call-site frame is the only location in a BGSVIEWER-14 report. In a minified production bundle it will be app.min.js:1:48213 with no debug_id, so the backend cannot symbolicate it. The report then has frames but still no usable location. describeError does call applyDebugIds on its frames (browser/src/detection-providers.ts:34), so the description and crash.json would also disagree.
Fix: State in §4.5 that the enricher must call applyDebugIds on the frames it returns (or that buildException runs it after enrichment). Add a test: a stackless Error plus a remembered origin from a minified file produces a frame carrying debug_id.
Related (P3): the wrapper-frame stripping (§4.2) relies on Error.captureStackTrace, which the doc says only "where the engine supports it". On Firefox and Safari the SDK's own wrapper frame stays at the top of the origin. isUserFrame (crash.ts:~182) only recognises /@bugsee/ paths, so in a bundled build the wrapper frame would pass as the application's and feed grouping. Say how the wrapper frame is removed there (for example by parsing and dropping the first frame).

Severity: P2 Medium
Problem: "Armed after its first rejection" has no mechanism. §4.1 establishes that attaching any reaction to the returned promise marks it handled. A pass-through wrapper attaches nothing, so it cannot see the promise reject. To observe "the first rejection" it must either attach a reaction, which is the derived-promise cost or unhandledrejection loss that arming is meant to avoid, or learn it from the unhandledrejection event. In the second case the reason is stackless and there is no origin to tie it to a method, so it cannot arm "that row".
Impact: As written, the gate is either circular or never fires. If it never fires, every non-rare row stays pass-through and the measured stackless rows in the table (HTMLImageElement.decode, FontFace.load, addIceCandidate, createImageBitmap) are never located. If it needs a reaction, the first-call cost the section claims is wrong.
Scenario: A page calls img.decode() on a broken image. The row is unarmed, so no Error was captured and no reaction was attached. The rejection arrives as a stackless EncodingError and nothing marks the method as failed. The second call behaves identically.
Fix: Specify how arming is triggered. Options: (a) use the cheap no-reaction mode of §4.1 for unarmed rows, registering byPromise.set(p, tokenWithoutStack). The unhandledrejection handler then finds event.promise, learns the method and arms it. (b) Arm from a document-level signal such as the §4.3 error listener. Also state that the first failure is lost by design for the measured rows. That loses exactly the "decode, FontFace.load, addIceCandidate" cases that §3 and the table treat as in scope. Consider keeping those always-on.

Problem: The doc points at a section that does not exist. §10 ("framework adapters", "every custom Promise implementation found in §10") is referenced here, at :293 and at :311, but the document ends at §9 (Independent review).
Impact: Plan step 5 (framework adapters) and the composition tests in §5 depend on a list that was never written. An implementer has no list of adapter capture paths or of Promise implementations to cover.
Fix: Either add §10 (the adapter capture paths in packages/{react,vue,nextjs,express,…} and the Promise implementations found, with the measured behaviour) or remove the references and mark step 5 as "to be scoped".

| **Hot in bulk** | `SubtleCrypto.*` (hashing/verifying many chunks or tokens), `Blob.arrayBuffer/bytes/text` and `Body.*` (`slice().arrayBuffer()` per chunk; `response.json()` per request on chatty apps), `Cache.*` / `CacheStorage.match` (a service worker's fetch handler runs per request) | loops over thousands of items | **off** (opt-in); `fetch` itself is covered by the network interceptor, never wrapped twice |
| **Bursty** | `HTMLImageElement.decode` (galleries), `CustomElementRegistry.whenDefined`, `CSSStyleSheet.replace` (one per component at startup), `FontFaceSet.load` (per text measure in some canvas libs), `RTCPeerConnection.getStats/addIceCandidate/replaceTrack/setParameters`, `CookieStore.*`, `MediaStreamTrack.applyConstraints` (per slider tick) | hundreds in a burst, then quiet | on for the measured-stackless ones (`decode`, `FontFace.load`, `addIceCandidate`), guarded by the breaker |
| **Rare** | `HTMLMediaElement.play`, `Clipboard.*`, `WakeLock.request`, `getUserMedia`, `ServiceWorkerContainer.register`, `Permissions.query`, `FileSystem*Handle.get*Handle`, `Worklet.addModule`, `decodeAudioData`, picker APIs | user-driven, a few per page | **on** |
**Gating replaces the breaker (see §4.4).** Frequency is a property of the app, not the API, so a static list is always wrong for
someone. Hot and bursty rows are armed only after their first failure, so a loop of successful calls pays one boolean check, and a
loop that starts failing pays the capture cost for a bounded number of calls. In a pure tight loop over the cheapest native call
the capture alone roughly doubles the per-call cost (1.2 to 2.3 µs in Chromium); that is the case the arming exists for.
### Cost and risk (what could make this a bad idea)
1. **Per-call overhead** of `new Error()` (microseconds). Fine for `play`, `getUserMedia`, `clipboard`; wrong for hot APIs — `fetch` (the network interceptor already wraps it; reuse its capture, don't add a second), `Scheduler.postTask/yield`, `FileSystemWritableFileStream.write`, `Blob/Body.*`, `SubtleCrypto.*` in loops, `ReadableStream` readers. Ship a **default set** (§2 measured + obvious async-failure APIs) and a `denyHot` list; the rest is opt-in.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Severity: P2 Medium
Problem: The v2 rewrite left the old gating model in place next to the new one. §4.4 says every non-rare row is armed after its first rejection, and "Gating replaces the breaker" (:266). But:
The table's Default column still says Hot and Hot-in-bulk rows are off (opt-in) (:261-262).
:261 and :263 still say "see breaker" and "guarded by the breaker".
:272 (cost and risk item 1) still describes a denyHot list and says "the rest is opt-in".
:248-250 still describe a hot list "kept out of the default set" and a capture: false / sampling option.
Body.json is a measured-stackless row (§2) and is also in the "Hot in bulk" Body.* row, which is off. This is the same conflict as the earlier Body.* finding and is still open.
createImageBitmap is both on the measured-stackless list and "hot".
Impact: There are now three incompatible policies: off, armed, and breaker-guarded. The factory's options shape (hot?, capture, sampling, arming) and the captureAsyncOrigins option in step 3 cannot be derived from the doc. The drift test in §5 ("always / armed / ignore") has three states but the table uses four or more.
Fix: Pick one policy per row, with three states (always, armed, off). Rewrite the table's Default column and cost-and-risk item 1 to match. Decide Body.json and createImageBitmap explicitly. Delete the denyHot and breaker text.

Severity: P3 Low
Three gaps in the capture and retention design:
"Usable frames" is now undefined. §4.2 says remember stores "an object without usable frames", but the v1 regex was removed and nothing replaces it. The earlier finding still applies. A check like "any at/@ line" leaves the §2 rows WebAssembly.* (1 frame, no user frame) unlocated. Define it as parseStack(...) returning no frame that passes isUserFrame. Also take structuredClone (a synchronous throw) and WebAssembly out of "stackless set the wrapper fixes", or say they are not addressed.
The measured design is not the proposed one.bench.mjs times new Error() alone. The text proposes new Error() followed by Error.captureStackTrace(holder, wrapper), a second capture. In V8 captureStackTrace(holder, wrapper) alone already omits the wrapper, so the first new Error() is redundant. The "+0.7 µs" figure does not include the second call. Measure the exact variant you ship, or drop the extra new Error().
Retention. "Released when the promise settles" holds for native-then mode (the reaction closure is dropped on settle). In patched-then mode byPromise.set(p, origin) is released only when p is GC'd, and the origin holds target strongly. That is a Clipboard/getUserMedia/play() promise pending indefinitely, and the origin keeps a possibly detached media element alive with it. Say which, and consider a WeakRef for target.

Severity: P3 Low
Problem: Plan step 6 ("document capture-phase error listener → system event") does not follow the repo's spec-first rule for system names. Per CLAUDE.md, every traces.system/events.system name is a constant in @bugsee/protocolsystem-names.ts, comes from the platform spec first, then pnpm spec:refresh, and spec-drift.test.ts fails on a name that isn't in the snapshot. Nothing in the plan says which event name this is or that the spec change goes first.
Impact: The step as written will fail the drift test or invite a literal event name in producer code. If the event is not in the JS platform spec, the plan needs a spec change before step 6.
Fix: In step 6, name the event, say whether it already exists in packages/protocol/spec/*.snapshot.json, and order the work spec → spec:refresh → register in EventName → producer. This is the same kind of precondition as the "Protocol" open question for the frame marker.

This is still open from the earlier reviews. probe.mjs:3 and bench.mjs:3 both hard-code /Volumes/External2TB/Projects/Bugsee/javascript/... to resolve playwright, so neither script runs on another checkout. The revised doc now leans on more measurements from them (the zone.js comparison, the Firefox derived-then cost, the 600 B retention figure). Several of those numbers come from scripts that are not in the PR. Anyone trying to reproduce §4.1-§4.2 from this directory cannot. Resolve Playwright with createRequire(new URL('../../../packages/instrumentation-tests/package.json', import.meta.url)). Also add the zone.js, memory and Proxy probes that back §4.1 and §4.2, or say they were run ad hoc.
Docs + measurement scripts only — no production behaviour change. HEAD b18fe94a vs last review (f837dc0f). Checked the v2 plan against packages/core/src/crash.ts (buildException / enrichFrames / toCrashFrame / syntheticFrames Error invariant), packages/core/src/client.ts (logException, describeError, callSiteFrames), packages/browser/src/detection-providers.ts (browser crashOf still does not thread enrichFrames or event.promise), packages/angular/src/error.ts, packages/capture/src/fetch-interceptor.ts, and the fetch/sha256/storage call sites. Did not re-run probe.mjs / bench.mjs (host-absolute Playwright path). Did not run unit tests. CI lint on this branch is red (Biome on the new .mjs files; run 41444497535, and the HEAD lint job).
Prior findings at f837dc0f
P1 syntheticFrames / empty-stack Error — fully addressed. §4.5 now names enrichFrames (crash.ts:196-206) and the browser crashOf / describeError gaps correctly. buildException does call the enricher when parsed = []; that is the working seam.
P2 remember regex — partially addressed. The / \s+at |@/ predicate is gone. “usable frames” is still undefined, and §4.5 applies origin only when parsed.length === 0, so the Chromium WASM “1 frame, no user frame” and sync structuredClone rows in §2 stay unfixed.
P2 Body.json vs denyHot — not addressed. Still three owners (measured default-on, table off, denyHot).
P2 createImageBitmap + breaker — partially addressed. The 200/s breaker is gone; arm-on-first-failure still drops the one-shot failure that §2 measured, and the table still says “see breaker”.
P2 origin wire / hidden — partially addressed. Now an §8 open question. Residual: do not mark origin frames hidden — the worker skips those when picking the grouping location (crash.ts:17-20), which would restore empty grouping for BGSVIEWER-14. toCrashFrame is still a closed allow-list, so a tag left only on StackFrame is dropped.
P3 probe path — not addressed, and it now fails the lint gate.
New findings (v2)
The remaining P1 is the zone.js mode this revision added: patched-then lookup cannot retrieve origin or target state for awaited / logException paths, which is how Angular writes play().
Overall risk: Medium
No runtime change. Implementing v2 as specified would fix bare Chromium play() (rare set + enrichFrames) and would still ship frames: [] with no element state for Angular/await video.play(), leak <video> nodes via byReason, and contradict itself on Body.json / one-shot decode.
Merge recommendation: Request changes
Fix the patched-then lookup (or drop the false §4.3 fallback), pick one default policy per API, and make the probe lint/run from this repo before this is the implementation spec.
Most important to fix
Patched-then must store byReason (iframe-realm native then — already measured) so awaited and adapter logException paths work. Write §10. There is no captureException.
Always capture for the measured-stackless set; arm-on-first-failure skips the failure that matters. Delete leftover “breaker” wording.
One owner for Body.json.
Do not pin target in a WeakMap keyed by the exception; snapshot describer fields on reject. sanitizeUrl the system-event src.
Repo-relative Playwright require + Biome-clean scripts (CI lint is red).
Positives
The v1 P1 (wrong seam) is actually fixed in the plan, with the right file:line citations.
Two-mode wrapping is grounded in a real zone.js 0.14.10 measurement, not speculation; not patching Promise is still the right call.
Target/this as the stronger signal for play() is the right product insight; the capture-phase error listener is a good complement if src is scrubbed.
callSiteFrames already exists for wrapper-frame stripping on Chromium/Firefox/WebKit (stack.ts:272-276); the factory should use it.
Drift test + Chromium and Firefox e2e + a zone.js composition test is the right honesty mechanism.

Severity: P2 Medium
Problem: Arm-on-first-failure means the first (and often only) rejection of every non-rare measured API ships without a call site. The frequency table still says “see breaker” / “guarded by the breaker” (lines 261, 263) for a mechanism this section deleted.
Impact: §2's reason for wrapping HTMLImageElement.decode, createImageBitmap, FontFace.load, addIceCandidate, Body.json is a stackless asynchronous failure. Those APIs are not in the rare set. A one-shot bad bitmap/font/JSON — the probe's actual cases — never arms in time. The previous 200/s breaker finding is not fixed; it is inverted into “skip the failure that matters.”
The factory-cost paragraph says capture is “noise for … decode (a few calls per page)”, so decode should be always-on like play(), not armed.
Scenario:createImageBitmap(badBlob) once in a canvas picker, or img.decode() once on a broken hero image. First rejection is unarmed; there is no second. crash.json.exception.frames stays [] (plus whatever describer can do without a stored origin).
Fix: Always capture for the measured-stackless set (rare set plus decode / FontFace.load / addIceCandidate, and createImageBitmap only if it stays default-on). Use the 60s budget only after capture is on, to cap a failure storm. Delete “see breaker”. If createImageBitmap stays classified hot, default it off and say so in §2/§7.

§4.4: not rare → arm after first failure (which, for invalid JSON, is the only failure).
Impact: Implementer A wraps the measured set → every Response#arrayBuffer / json / text pays a wrapper (and the SDK's own response.arrayBuffer() in packages/browser-utils/src/fetch-transport.ts:57 if the whole mixin is patched). Implementer B follows this table → Firefox invalid-JSON stays frames: []. The drift test cannot decide.
Scenario: A chatty app calls response.json() per request, or a single r.json() on {oops. Those two readings of this doc produce opposite default sets.
Fix: One owner. Either Body.json (maybe text) is always-on and the rest of Body.* is off, or it is opt-in and §2/§7 stop listing it as default. Reconcile captureAsyncOrigins with always / armed / off in one table. If Body.prototype is wrapped, capture the pre-patch arrayBuffer for the SDK transport.
For `play()` the call site is the weaker signal; **`this` carries the root cause**. After the failure, in Chromium the element held
`networkState = 3`, `error.code = 4` and `error.message = "PipelineStatus::DEMUXER_ERROR_COULD_NOT_OPEN: FFmpegDemuxer: open context failed"`; in Firefox `"Failed to open media"`. So the origin keeps `target` (free, and released on settle) and the report adds a

Problem: Two memory/timing claims about target are wrong.
“Released on settle” is false in native-then mode. byReason.set(r, origin) pins {error, target, method} for the lifetime of the exception object, not the promise. A WeakMap keyed by the DOMException keeps the HTMLMediaElement (decoder pipeline, src buffer) alive as long as the app holds the error — Redux, an error queue, console.error's retained object.
“Read at report time” because “the media error event fires … after [the rejection] in Firefox” does not work: unhandledrejectionis the report. In Firefox that is before the error event, so element.error is still null. Holding the node does not wait for the event.
Impact: Chromium (BGSVIEWER-14) can snapshot networkState / error in the rejection handler — the error event already fired. Firefox play() already has a call site; the extra target description is missed, and the element is leaked anyway. A session that fails play() on replaced <video> nodes retains every old element.
The independent capture-phase error listener (line 193) currently records raw src; the crash path says “scrubbed currentSrc”. Signed CDN URLs would go into events.system unsanitized. A new system event also needs an EventName in @bugsee/protocolsystem-names.ts (one-place-per-name rule).
Scenario: User hits play on a broken clip, the player swaps the <video> and stores the NotSupportedError in an error list. The detached element cannot be GC'd. Repeat per clip.
Fix: Snapshot describer fields in the rejection handler (Chromium-complete). Do not store target in the WeakMap; WeakRef only if you must re-read. Fill Firefox's late error.message from the capture-phase listener, matching the element — and run src through sanitizeUrl.
This push adds §4.1a (pristine then), the §10 framework and custom-Promise survey, and by-reason lookup everywhere. It is docs only. I read the diff against b18fe94a and checked its citations against crash.ts, client.ts, browser/src/detection-providers.ts, the framework adapters and samples/angular-spa. I did not re-run the probe, bench or any zone.js measurements, so those are taken as stated.
Earlier findings now fixed in the doc
Patched-then lookup (Cursor P1): the lookup is now by reason on every path, via a pristine then. This also removes the zone.js regression from the previous version.
§10 was referenced but missing: it now exists.
enrichFrames reaching more paths: §4.5 and §10.3 now route the enricher through crashOfErrorEvent and the adapters. Client already takes an enrichFrames option (client.ts:585,1769), so the adapters inherit it without per-adapter wiring.
The §10 citations I checked match the code:crashOfErrorEvent at detection-providers.ts:54, samples/angular-spa pinning zone.js ~0.14.10, and the adapter files.
Still open from earlier reviews (not repeated inline)
Arming: arm-on-first-failure has no mechanism, and it loses the first failure of the measured rows (decode, FontFace.load, addIceCandidate, createImageBitmap).
One policy per row:
denyHot, "see breaker" and "guarded by the breaker" are still in the text (:286, :288, :297).
Body.json and createImageBitmap are still claimed by both the always-on and the hot lists.
debug_id and wrapper frame:
Frames added by enrichFrames never get a debug_id, because applyDebugIds runs before enrichment (crash.ts:202 vs :206).
Wrapper-frame stripping on Firefox and Safari is unspecified.
Target retention:
A WeakMap keyed by the reason keeps the HTMLMediaElement alive for as long as the app holds the error.
Firefox's late error event is not handled by reading at report time.
The src in the capture-phase listener needs sanitizeUrl.
Wire marker: the origin-frame marker is still an open question (§8). The frames must not be hidden.
probe.mjs:3 and bench.mjs:3: both still hard-code /Volumes/.... Biome lint failed on these files in an earlier CI run and I did not re-check it. Resolve Playwright relative to the repo.
Spec-first rule: step 6's new system event does not say that the spec comes first (system-names.ts, then spec:refresh).
New findings (inline)
P3 (:181-187, §4.1a):
The "still native at install" test has no definition now that the toString check is gone.
Step 2's "return p untouched" loses unhandledrejection if a reaction was already attached.
The hidden iframe's lifecycle and side effects are unstated: DOM replay serialisation, CSP, window.length, and what happens when it is removed.
P3 (:347): §8 still says awaited chains under zone.js "cannot be located". §4.1a and §10 now say they can.
P3 (:382): the Redux Toolkit "name+message match" cannot be built on the WeakMap store. A strong map would leak and could cite the wrong call site.
Also, reportReactError is in packages/react/src/report.ts, not error-boundary.ts.
Summary
Overall risk: Low. There is no behaviour change. The risk is that the design misleads the implementation.
Merge recommendation: Fine to merge as a design doc once the open P2 items are resolved in the text or recorded as open questions. Those are arming, one policy per row, debug_id on enriched frames, target retention and the lint failures on the .mjs scripts.
Most important to fix:
Define how the arming trigger works, or make the measured-stackless rows always-on.
Reconcile the table, cost-and-risk and §4.4 into one always/armed/off policy.
Specify debug_id for enriched frames and the wrapper-frame strip on non-V8 engines.
Snapshot the target description at rejection time instead of pinning the element.
Make the scripts repo-relative and lint-clean.
Tighten §4.1a as above.
Positives:
The framework survey is a large improvement. It found that capturing the global then breaks play() when Promise is replaced, and the design now guards against that.
Lookup by reason is the right invariant, and §10.4 lists what is unmeasured.

Severity: P3 Low
Problem: §4.1a leaves three things unspecified or self-contradictory.
"The global one if it was still native at install" has no test. The v2 text selected the mode with a Function.prototype.toString[native code] check. That check is gone and nothing replaces it. Without it, an SDK that loads after Bluebird or core-js captures the replaced then and calls it on every native play() promise. It must be neither unreliable nor spoofable: zone.js patches Function.prototype.toString for its own Promise, so a toString test has to be validated on the global Promise and on Promise.prototype.then separately.
Step 2's "return the original p untouched" is not always a no-op. If then.call(p, …) has already attached our reaction before it throws, or it returns a non-thenable after attaching, p is already marked handled. Returning p then loses unhandledrejection for the app, which is exactly the trap §4.1 exists to avoid. The failure mode is "degrades to no wrapper" only when the throw happens before the reaction is attached. State which cases are which, or fall back to the no-reaction mode only for the pre-attach failure.
The hidden iframe has no stated lifecycle. The measured result was that its then restores detection. Nothing says when it is created (at install the <head> script has no document.body), whether it stays in the DOM, or whether it is removed. A persistent iframe changes window.length/frames, is serialised into the DOM replay (packages/replay/src/recorder.ts), and can trip a CSP frame-src. A removed one is a detached realm whose behaviour was not measured.
Fix: write down the native-then test and its measured behaviour under zone.js, the pre- versus post-attach distinction in step 2, and the iframe create/remove policy (or a then obtained without a DOM, e.g. from Promise.resolve().constructor captured at install). Add a test per case to §5.

Severity: P3 Low
Problem: This open question contradicts the revised design. It says awaited chains under a patched then (zone.js) "cannot be located; they get the target description only". §4.1/§4.1a now say that with a pristine then the lookup is by reason and succeeds for bare and awaited calls under zone (measured, Chromium and Firefox). Only the no-reaction fallback has that limit.
Impact: An implementer reading §8 will plan a degraded zone path that §4.1a removed. §8 also still has the old "wrapped toString remains detectable" line without tying it to the install-time test.
Fix: Reword to "awaited chains are located only when no pristine then is available (fallback mode)", and add a note on how §10.4's unmeasured Angular-in-browser case closes this question.
| React 18/19 event handler | ignores the returned promise | fires, same reason | none |
| React 19 `use()` | attaches `then`, rethrows in render | does not fire; boundary gets the same reason; no boundary → window `error` | lookup by reason |
| TanStack Query | handles the promise internally | unhandled `fetchQuery`: fires; caught/observer errors: same reason | none |
| Redux Toolkit `createAsyncThunk` | serializes the error | `unwrap()` rejects with a **plain object, not the reason**: identity lookup misses | optional name+message match |
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Severity: P3 Low
Problem: "optional name+message match" cannot be built on the design's own store. The origin lives in a WeakMap<reason, origin> (§4.1). A plain object produced by createAsyncThunk has no identity link to the original reason, so a name+message lookup needs a strong Map keyed by strings.
Impact: A strong map retains origins (and, per §4.3, possibly the target) forever. It also misattributes: two different NotSupportedError: The element has no supported sources. failures from different call sites share a key, so the later one overwrites the earlier, and a report can cite the wrong call site. A wrong call site is worse than none.
Fix: Drop the row's "Extra handling", or specify a bounded, short-TTL ring keyed by name+message that is consulted only when the reason is a plain non-Error object, and mark the frames as approximate.
(Minor: §10.3 cites reportReactError under packages/react/src/error-boundary.ts; it lives in packages/react/src/report.ts.)
Define the byReason storage type and when its entries are removed.
The design sets byReason.set(r, origin) when a promise rejects. The origin holds target: this. It says the origin lives until the promise settles, and that the target is "released on settle". The design never states the storage type of byReason or a point where its entries are removed. Once the application keeps a rejected reason, the origin and its target stay reachable. This contradicts the stated lifetime. Specify the store type and its removal point, and correct the "released on settle" statements for reason-keyed entries.

its origin; do not prescribe a storage strategy until its key and cleanup

Interleave the benchmark variants and keep the raw per-round samples before stating that the wrapper costs nothing measurable.
Lines 30-38 run all five rounds of one variant before the next variant starts. The native call always runs first, and the hand-written wrapper always runs last. The output keeps only the median, so the spread across rounds is lost.
The documented conclusion, "costs nothing measurable" (2.33 vs 2.11 µs in Chromium), compares two single-order medians. Without the per-round values, the comparison cannot rule out warm-up, thermal, or clock effects. The current output does not show that any such effect occurred.

Design lookup by reason needs a collision rule.
The design stores one origin per reason object, so two pending wrapped calls that reject with the same object share one entry. The lookup has no step that resolves the collision. The report can therefore name the call site and target of the last call that rejected, not the call that produced the rejection.
Section 4.5 says the lookup is "by reason, everywhere" and does not mention shared reasons. Specify what happens when a reason object maps to more than one origin. Either keep a collection and define how the report selects one entry, or key the origin by the derived promise and document when event.promise can identify the call.

Clarify the origin lookup design in Section 4.5: when multiple wrapped calls
reject with the same reason object, define how the report identifies the correct

selects, or key origins by the derived promise and document when event.promise
reliably identifies that call.

Specify how a handled first rejection arms an unarmed method.
§4.4 arms a row only after an observed rejection. It also defines an unarmed row as a pass-through, which attaches no reaction. A rejection that the caller handles is therefore never observed, so it cannot arm the row. §4.5 and §10.3 require the origin on the handled path too, including logException, captureException, and framework adapters. For every non-rare row, that requirement cannot be met as written. Add the arming observation point to §4.4. Also state how a handled rejection reaches the origin lookup.

§4.4 says an unarmed method is a pass-through with one boolean check, yet its first failure still reports the target where a describer exists. Docs + measurement scripts only — no production behaviour change. HEAD cc94ce3b vs last review (b18fe94a). Checked the new §4.1 / §4.1a / §4.5 / §10 plan against packages/core/src/crash.ts (buildException / enrichFrames / applyDebugIds / toCrashFrame), packages/core/src/client.ts (logException, describeError at 171–184), packages/browser/src/detection-providers.ts (browser crashOf still does not thread enrichFrames), packages/angular/src/error.ts (reportError → logException, unwraps only ngOriginalError), packages/web-adapter/src/adapter.ts, the React/Vue/Solid/Svelte/SvelteKit/Nuxt error seams, zone.js patchThen / wrapping (NativePromise.prototype[__zone_symbol__then] is the saved native then; wrapping is off by default since 0.14.2), and sha256.ts / fetch-transport.ts / storage-tracker.ts. Ran biome check on the two .mjs files: 5 errors (noAsyncPromiseExecutor + format). Did not re-run probe.mjs / bench.mjs (host-absolute Playwright path). Did not run unit tests (no production code).
Prior findings at b18fe94a
P1 patched-then never stores byReason — fully addressed. Derived mode now uses a pristine then and keys origin by reason; §10 exists; Angular await play() / logException are in scope on that path. p.__zone_symbol__then is the right first lookup (zone.js patchThen stores the native method on NativePromise.prototype).
P2 arm-on-first-failure — not addressed. First (often only) failure of every non-rare measured API still ships without a call site; the table still says “see breaker”.
P2 Body.json three owners — not addressed.
P2 byReason pins target — not addressed.
P2 probe path + Biome lint — not addressed. Local biome still reports 5 errors; scripts still createRequire('/Volumes/External2TB/...').
P2 remember regex — still partially addressed. Regex is gone; “usable frames” is still undefined; Chromium WASM 1-frame and sync structuredClone rows in §2 stay unfixed.
P2 origin wire / hidden — still partially addressed. §8 is the right place. Do not mark origin frames hidden — the worker skips those when picking the grouping location (crash.ts:17-20). toCrashFrame (crash.ts:141-168) is a closed allow-list, so a new tag left only on StackFrame is dropped.
New findings (this push)
The remaining holes are the ones that would still ship frames: [] (or an empty description) after an implementer follows this doc: arming skips the measured one-shot, three default policies, Angular logException description, zone wrapping identity, and §8 undoing §4.1.
Overall risk: Medium
No runtime change. Implementing §4.1 + §4.5 + §10 as specified would fix bare and awaited Chromium play() (including Angular + zone.js 0.14.10) via byReason. Implementing the rest as specified would still skip one-shot decode / FontFace.load / createImageBitmap / Body.json, leak <video> nodes, drop Angular report descriptions, and contradict itself on default-on vs off.
Merge recommendation: Request changes
Fix the P2s in the text (one default policy per API, always-on for the measured-stackless set, snapshot target on reject, name client.tsdescribeError, unwrap zone .rejection, delete the §8 leftover) and make the probe lint/run from this repo before this is the implementation spec.
Most important to fix
Always capture for the measured-stackless set; arm-on-first-failure skips the failure that matters. Delete leftover “breaker” wording.
One owner for Body.json / createImageBitmap (always / armed / off in one table).
Snapshot describer fields on reject; do not pin HTMLMediaElement in byReason.
logException's describeError (client.ts:171-184) must get the same origin+target fallback as the browser provider — that is the Angular/Vue/React path. There is no captureException. Unwrap zone's .rejection when looking up by reason.
§8 still says awaited zone chains cannot be located; that is now false and would undo §4.1 at implementation time.
The v2 P1 (patched-then / Angular await play()) is actually fixed in the plan: pristine then + reason-keyed lookup, with a measured __zone_symbol__then / iframe-realm order and a try/catch that never breaks the app call.
§10 is the missing section, and it is grounded in real library behaviour (Vue .catch, React 19 use(), Alpine setTimeout(throw), Bluebird identity, __awaiter).
Not patching the global Promise is still the right call; enrichFrames is still the right seam; callSiteFrames already strips the wrapper on Chromium/Firefox/WebKit (stack.ts:272-276).
Vue production-without-errorHandler is honestly called out as an adapter requirement, not a wrapper gap.
Residual (not blocking this round)
applyDebugIds runs beforeenrichFrames (crash.ts:202 vs :206); origin frames from a minified call site will lack debug_id unless the enricher (or buildException) stamps them.
SDK-internal crypto.subtle.digest, response.arrayBuffer(), storage.estimate/persisted are still on the wrap list with no bypass.
Plan step 6 (documenterror → system event) still needs spec-first EventName + sanitizeUrl on src.
WebKit unmeasured; Angular itself was not run in a browser (§10.4).

Severity: P2 Medium
Problem: Arm-on-first-failure still means the first (and often only) rejection of every non-rare measured API ships without a call site. Observing that first rejection without attaching a reaction is still unspecified (§4.1: any reaction marks the promise handled). The frequency table still says “see breaker” / “guarded by the breaker” (lines 286, 288) for a mechanism §4.4 deleted.
The factory-cost paragraph still calls capture “noise for … decode (a few calls per page)”, so decode should be always-on like play(), not armed.
If arming stays for true hot rows, specify the trigger without a reaction (e.g. a no-stack byPromise token consumed by unhandledrejection) and state that the first failure is lost by design.
| Class | Methods | Where the loop comes from | Default |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Hot** (per frame / per chunk / per task) | `Scheduler.postTask`, `Scheduler.yield`; `FileSystemWritableFileStream.write/seek/truncate`; `GPUBuffer.mapAsync`, `GPUQueue.onSubmittedWorkDone`, `GPUDevice.popErrorScope`; `ImageCapture.grabFrame`, `ImageDecoder.decode`, `VideoFrame.copyTo`, `Video/AudioDecoder/Encoder.flush`; `OffscreenCanvas.convertToBlob`; `createImageBitmap` | frame-rate media/GPU pipelines, cooperative schedulers, chunked file writes | **off** (opt-in), except `createImageBitmap` which is on the measured-stackless list — see breaker |
§4.4: not rare → arm after first failure (which, for invalid JSON / one bad bitmap, is the only failure).
Same split for createImageBitmap.
Same for createImageBitmap (off if it stays classified hot). Reconcile captureAsyncOrigins with always / armed / off in one table. If Body.prototype is wrapped, capture the pre-patch arrayBuffer for the SDK transport (subtle.digest in packages/util/src/sha256.ts:33 and storage.estimate/persisted in packages/trackers/src/browser/storage-tracker.ts:26-27 need the same bypass).
### 4.3 What is reported: the call site AND the target
For `play()` the call site is the weaker signal; **`this` carries the root cause**. After the failure, in Chromium the element held
`networkState = 3`, `error.code = 4` and `error.message = "PipelineStatus::DEMUXER_ERROR_COULD_NOT_OPEN: FFmpegDemuxer: open context failed"`; in Firefox `"Failed to open media"`. So the origin keeps `target` (free, and released on settle) and the report adds a
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Severity: P2 Medium
Problem: Two memory/timing claims about target are still wrong after the reason-keyed rewrite.
“Released on settle” / “free, and released on settle” is false in derived mode. byReason.set(r, origin) pins {error, target, method} for the lifetime of the exception object, not the promise.
The independent capture-phase error listener (line 211) currently records raw src; the crash path says “scrubbed currentSrc”. Signed CDN URLs would go into events.system unsanitized. A new system event also needs an EventName in @bugsee/protocolsystem-names.ts (one-place-per-name rule) — none exists today.

Problem: The handled/adapter path this commit adds to §4.5 still does not name the describeError that those adapters actually call, and it still names an API that does not exist.
Angular BugseeErrorHandler → reportAngularError → reportError (packages/web-adapter/src/adapter.ts:77) → logException. Vue/React/Solid/SvelteKit are the same reportError/logException hop. Nuxt is installBugseeErrorHandler (packages/nuxt/src/client.ts:49), not entry.js:43.
logException builds description via coredescribeError (packages/core/src/client.ts:171-184) beforebuildCrashJson. That helper returns undefined when !error.stack and there is no cause — a stackless DOMException.
Client options.enrichFrames (line 1769) can fill crash.json frames; it cannot fill that description. The browser-provider describeError (detection-providers.ts:28-40) is a different function, used only by unhandledrejection / error.
There is no public captureException (v3 renamed it to logException). Same leftover at line 411.
Impact: The Angular/await video.play() path this revision exists to cover can get origin frames in crash.json and still ship request.json.description empty. Grouping may work; anything reading the description (notifications, UI, “same helper for description and crash.json”) still shows no location.
Scenario: Angular 19 + zone.js 0.14.10, async playClip() { await this.video.play(); } with a bad src. Zone's ErrorHandler → BugseeErrorHandler → logException(domException). Enricher attaches origin frames. describeError sees no .stack and no cause → no description.
Fix: One helper, used by browser describeError, core describeError, and buildCrashJson/enrichFrames. Drop captureException. In the enricher, also look up error.rejection (zone's wrapper when __zone_symbol__DISABLE_WRAPPING_UNCAUGHT_PROMISE_REJECTION = false — see the §10.1 row; Angular only unwraps ngOriginalError).

Problem: This open question is leftover from the v2 two-mode design and now contradicts §4.1 / §10.
§4.1 (lines 163–165) and §10 claim a pristine then makes lookup-by-reason succeed for “Chromium and Firefox, bare and native await”, including zone.js 0.14.10 / 0.16.3. This bullet still says awaited chains under zone.js cannot be located and only get the target description.
Cost/risk #4 (line 300) also still says “the two-mode wrapper of §4.1”.
Impact: An implementer reading §8 last will skip the awaited / logException lookup this commit just made required. That is the Angular await video.play() path — the P1 of the previous review, reintroduced as an “open question”.
Scenario: Plan step 5 is implemented as “target description only for awaited zone chains” because §8 said so. Bare play() reports get origin frames; Angular await this.video.play() does not. Staging-shaped report for the bug that triggered the work.
Fix: Delete this bullet (or rewrite it to the no-reaction fallback only: no pristine then ⇒ bare event.promise only). Update cost/risk #4 to “pristine then + no-reaction fallback”.

Severity: P2 Medium
Problem: This row is listed as handled by “pristine then”, but wrapping changes the object that reaches the consumer, so reason-keyed lookup misses.
zone.js (confirmed in current patchPromise): isDisableWrappingUncaughtPromiseRejection = global[symbol] !== false — wrapping is off by default since 0.14.2 (sample zone.js ~0.14.10). Setting the flag to falseenables wrapping. The wrapped value is a new Error (“Uncaught (in promise): …”) with .rejection = the original DOMException and .promise = the zone promise.
unhandledrejection is synthesised with reason: e.rejection (original) — lookup hits.
NgZone.onHandleError → ErrorHandler.handleError throws/receives the wrapper when wrapping is on (throw uncaughtPromiseError, not .rejection).
BugseeErrorHandler unwraps only ngOriginalError (packages/angular/src/error.ts:27-32), which Angular 19+ does not set. It does not read .rejection.
§10's headline is “No per-library code path is needed, provided … origin is looked up by reason”. The reason that arrives is no longer the object byReason was keyed on.
Impact: The one zone configuration this table calls out as extra-handled still ships frames: [] on the Angular adapter path. Default 0.14.10 is fine; this row is not.
Scenario: App sets window.__zone_symbol__DISABLE_WRAPPING_UNCAUGHT_PROMISE_REJECTION = false before zone.js (restore pre-0.14.2 wrapping). await video.play() rejects. Wrapper stores origin under the DOMException. ErrorHandler receives the wrapped Error. byReason.get(wrapper) is a miss.
Fix: In asyncOriginEnricher, look up error, then error.rejection, then error.ngOriginalError. Add that unwrap to the Angular adapter (or the shared enricher) and to the §10.1 extra-handling column. Composition e2e: this flag on, await play(), report has the origin frame.
This push adds the .cause walk (§4.5), the §10.4 survey of the remaining frameworks and libraries, §10.5 (invisible-error gaps) and §10.6 (unverified). It is still docs and scripts only. I read all three files and checked the new claims against packages/core/src/crash.ts, packages/core/src/dedup.ts and packages/browser/src/detection-providers.ts. I did not re-run probe.mjs, bench.mjs or any of the library measurements, so those are taken as stated.
New finding (inline)
P3 (async-origin-capture.md:244-245): the "enricher also walks reason.cause" bullet duplicates what buildException already does. It calls enrichFrames on every cause level (crash.ts:203-227). Its motivation (axios, ky, ofetch and Mithril wrapping a stackless Failed to fetch) also conflicts with §1, which measured fetch failures as having frames, and with the doc's own statement that fetch is not wrapped. A second walk can also attach origin frames twice.
Checked and fine
§10.5 says nothing in packages/ listens for Astro's astro:hydration-error. A search found no match.
The Preact-iso and Alpine notes say the SDK's dedupe must key on reason identity. A dedupe exists (core/src/dedup.ts, checkOrSetAlreadyCaught). I did not trace whether it keys on the object, so I am not raising a finding.
Earlier findings: none fixed in this push (existing inline comments still apply)
P2 Arm-on-first-failure has no mechanism, and it skips the first and often only failure of the measured rows (decode, FontFace.load, addIceCandidate, createImageBitmap, Body.json). The table still says "see breaker" (:288, :290).
P2 The default policy is split three ways: the table, cost-and-risk item 1 (denyHot) and §4.4. Body.json and createImageBitmap each have more than one owner.
P2 Storing target in byReason keeps the element alive for as long as the app holds the exception, not "until it settles". The Firefox late error event also cannot be read at report time. The capture-phase listener's src needs sanitizeUrl, and a new system event needs a spec-first EventName.
P2 The enricher's frames get no debug_id, because applyDebugIds runs before enrichFrames (crash.ts:202 vs :206). Core describeError (client.ts:171-184) is a different function from the browser one, and Angular, Vue and React all reach it via logException.
P2 §8 (:349) still says awaited zone.js chains cannot be located, which contradicts §4.1 and §4.1a. Cost-and-risk item 4 still says "two-mode wrapper".
P2 zone.js with the wrapping flag set to false hands ErrorHandler a wrapper Error. The reason is on .rejection and the origin is keyed on the original object, so the lookup misses.
P2/P3 "Usable frames" is still undefined. Origin frames have no wire marker and must not be marked hidden.
P2probe.mjs and bench.mjs still hard-code /Volumes/..., and Biome still reports 5 errors on them, so the lint gate is red. Many §4.1, §4.2 and §10 numbers, now including all of §10.4, come from scripts that are not in the PR.
Summary
Overall risk: Low. There is no behaviour change. The risk is that the design misleads the implementation.
Merge recommendation: Request changes to the doc, then fine as a design record. The open P2s should be fixed in the text or recorded as open questions. The lint failure blocks the merge regardless.
Most important to fix:
Always capture the measured-stackless set. Reconcile the table, cost-and-risk and §4.4 into one always/armed/off policy, and delete the leftover breaker and denyHot text.
Snapshot the target description when the promise rejects instead of pinning the element in byReason. Name core describeError in §4.5 and unwrap .rejection.
Say how enriched frames get a debug_id, and delete the stale §8 zone.js bullet.
Drop or reword the new .cause-walk bullet.
Make the scripts repo-relative and Biome-clean, and check in the probes that back §4.1a and §10.
Positives:
§10.4 is broad and labels what is unverified, in §10.6.
§10.5 lists gaps that exist with or without this work, such as Vue production, Astro hydration and Stencil.
The pristine-then and lookup-by-reason design holds up across the survey.

Severity: P3 Low
Problem: The new "enricher also walks reason.cause" bullet (and §10.4 item 1) duplicates a walk that already exists, and its stated motivation does not match the doc's own measurements.
buildException already recurses down cause and calls enrichFrames(error, parsed) on every level (packages/core/src/crash.ts:203-227, MAX_CAUSE_DEPTH, seen set). A stackless DOMException in .cause already gets its own enricher call with parsed = [], so a by-reason lookup on it works with no extra code.
A second walk inside the enricher would look up the same cause object again, once from the outer level and once from the recursive level. The origin frames could end up on both the outer exception and exception.cause.
The libraries cited (axios, ky, ofetch, Mithril m.request) wrap fetch/XHR. §1 measured fetch failures as having frames in both engines, and the §10 table says fetch is not wrapped by this design. The play()-style rejections this design targets are not wrapped by those libraries.
Impact: An implementer who follows this bullet adds a redundant, possibly double-attaching code path for a case the doc's data says is not stackless. The §10.4 summary still presents it as one of "two kinds of extra handling" that emerged.
Scenario:play() rejects, app code does throw new Error('playback failed', { cause: e }). The outer error has user frames, so the parsed.length === 0 gate skips it. The recursion in buildException reaches e, and the enricher attaches the origin there. The extra walk adds nothing to this and can duplicate frames on the outer level.
Fix: Drop the bullet and the "walk .cause" entries in §10.4. Replace them with one sentence saying buildException already runs the enricher per cause level, and add a test for "stackless cause under a framed outer error". If axios's XHR adapter (no .cause) matters, say that nothing can recover it, rather than listing it under this fix.
Docs + measurement scripts only — no production behaviour change. HEAD 0af17f19 vs last review (cc94ce3b). Unique +52/−3 in docs/design/async-origin-capture.md (§4.5 .cause walk, §10.4 survey, §10.5 invisible-error gaps). Checked the new claims against packages/core/src/crash.ts (buildException already recurses .cause with enrichFrames at 216–220; applyDebugIds still runs before enrichment at 202 vs 206), packages/core/src/client.ts (describeError 171–184; instance dedup only in logException at 1735), packages/core/src/dedup.ts, packages/browser/src/detection-providers.ts (providers never tag the reason), packages/react/src/report.ts (linkComponentStack inserts a new Error as .cause), packages/capture/src/fetch-interceptor.ts (rethrows, stores no origin), packages/angular/src/error.ts (unwraps only ngOriginalError), packages/astro/src/client.ts (launch only — the hydration-error GAP is real), and packages/remix/src/client.ts (bugseeOnError is correctly cited). Ran biome check on the two .mjs files: 5 errors. Did not re-run probe.mjs / bench.mjs. Did not run unit tests (no production code). Previous CI lint job on cc94ce3b failed (41449951851).
Prior findings at cc94ce3b
P1 patched-then / syntheticFrames — still fully addressed.
P2 arm-on-first-failure — not addressed. First (often only) failure of every non-rare measured API still ships without a call site; the table still says “see breaker” / denyHot.
P2 Body.json / createImageBitmap three owners — not addressed.
P2 byReason pins target — not addressed. “Released on settle” is still false for a reason-keyed store.
P2 logExceptiondescribeError — not addressed. This push edited the adjacent paragraph and still names captureException (there is none) instead of client.ts:171-184.
P2 §8 leftover — not addressed. Still says awaited zone chains cannot be located.
P2 probe path + Biome lint — not addressed. Local biome still reports 5 errors; both scripts still createRequire('/Volumes/External2TB/...').
P2 zone wrapping identity — not addressed (residual: wrapping is off by default since zone.js 0.14.2; DISABLE_WRAPPING=false still delivers a new Error with .rejection, and Angular unwraps only ngOriginalError).
New findings (this push)
The survey itself is useful. The fix it adds is not: walking .cause cannot recover origin for axios/ky/ofetch, and “dedupe on reason identity” is not a property of the browser providers that would see Alpine / Preact-iso play().
Overall risk: Medium
No runtime change. Implementing §4.1 + §4.5 + §10 as specified would fix bare and awaited Chromium play() (including Angular + zone.js 0.14.10) via byReason. Implementing the new identity-breaker bullet as specified would not attach origin to axios/ky/ofetch (and might stomp stacks if loosened). Implementing the rest as specified would still skip one-shot decode / FontFace.load / createImageBitmap / Body.json, leak <video> nodes, drop Angular logException descriptions, and double-report Alpine play().
Merge recommendation: Request changes
Fix the new .cause/dedup claims and the still-open P2s in the text before this is the implementation spec.
Most important to fix
Drop the enricher-level .cause walk as the identity-breaker answer — fetch is not wrapped, already has frames, and buildException already recurses. Record axios-XHR / Mithril-new-Error / RTK as origin-lost.
Tag at the browser error / unhandledrejection providers if Alpine / Preact-iso must not double-report the same reason.
Always capture for the measured-stackless set; delete leftover “breaker” / denyHot wording; one always / armed / off per row.
Snapshot describer fields on reject; do not pin HTMLMediaElement in byReason.
logException's describeError (client.ts:171-184) must get the same origin+target fallback. There is no captureException. Delete the §8 leftover that says awaited zone chains cannot be located.
Repo-relative Playwright require + Biome-clean scripts (pnpm lint is the CI gate).
Positives
Measuring the remaining frameworks is the right follow-up to §10, and the headline result for play() (no library replaced the reason) is the one that matters for BGSVIEWER-14.
Invisible-error gaps (§10.5) are correctly called out as adapter/docs work, not wrapper work. The Astro astro:hydration-error GAP matches packages/astro/src/client.ts (launch only).
Not patching the global Promise is still the right call; enrichFrames is still the right seam; callSiteFrames already strips the wrapper on Chromium/Firefox/WebKit.
Residual (not blocking this round)
applyDebugIds runs beforeenrichFrames (crash.ts:202 vs :206); origin frames from a minified call site will lack debug_id unless the enricher (or buildException) stamps them.
Do not mark origin frames hidden — the worker skips those when picking the grouping location (crash.ts:17-20). toCrashFrame is a closed allow-list, so a tag left only on StackFrame is dropped.
SDK-internal crypto.subtle.digest, response.arrayBuffer(), storage.estimate/persisted are still on the wrap list with no bypass.
Chromium WASM 1-frame and sync structuredClone rows in §2 stay unfixed (“usable frames” still undefined; wrapper never sees a sync throw).
Plan step 6 still needs spec-first EventName + sanitizeUrl on src.
WebKit unmeasured; Angular itself was not run in a browser (§10.6).

Severity: P2 Medium
Problem: Walking reason.cause cannot recover a call site for the libraries that motivated this bullet (axios 1.21.0, ky 2.2.0, ofetch 1.5.1, Mithril m.request).
§1 already measured fetch network failure as “frames, call site named” in both engines. There is no stackless TypeError: Failed to fetch for this wrapper to remember.
Fetch is never wrapped (“covered by the network interceptor, never wrapped twice”). The interceptor (packages/capture/src/fetch-interceptor.ts:387-433) rethrows the same error and does not store an origin. XHR is not in the wrap list.
AxiosError / HTTPError / FetchError are constructed in JS, so they have a stack. The enricher attaches origin only when parsed.length === 0 (:235), so the walk would not run on the outer exception.
buildException already recurses into .cause with the same enrichFrames (packages/core/src/crash.ts:216-220). A second walk inside the enricher is redundant; loosening parsed.length === 0 would replace a real axios stack with a fetch origin.
Mithril m.request “wraps in a new Error” with no .cause (:428-429), so the table's “+ .cause walk” (:449) is a miss. Axios XHR is already admitted to have none.
The React adapter inserts a new Error as .cause (packages/react/src/report.ts:40-43) before logException. A first-cause lookup hits React component stack:…, which was never stored in byReason.
Impact: Implementers following §10.4's “neither library-specific code” conclusion will ship a walk that never fires for axios/ky/ofetch, and may stomp stacks or the React component-stack link if they loosen the empty-parsed rule.
Scenario:axios.get fails. The report is an AxiosError with a JS stack. byReason has nothing for it or its cause. The user still sees axios's own frames — which is correct, because §1 already measured fetch as located. The actual identity breakers (Mithril new Error, axios XHR, Redux Toolkit plain object) stay unfixed.
Fix: Drop the enricher-level .cause walk as the identity-breaker answer. Let buildException's existing cause recursion enrich an inner exception that was actually stored (fetch will not be). Record axios-XHR / Mithril-new-Error / RTK-serialize as origin-lost. If a walk is kept, skip the SDK-inserted React component-stack Error, use a seen-set, and never replace non-empty parsed frames.

Problem: §10.4/§10.5 require “dedupe on reason identity” for Alpine (window error + unhandledrejection, same reason) and Preact-iso lazy (double unhandledrejection). Instance dedup today only runs in logException (packages/core/src/client.ts:1735 → checkOrSetAlreadyCaught). The browser error and unhandledrejection providers (packages/browser/src/detection-providers.ts:121-154) call handleReportingRequest directly and never tag the reason.
Impact: An Alpine handler that returns video.play() — the BGSVIEWER-14 case — files both a crash (uncaught) and an error (unhandledrejection) for the same DOMException. Preact-iso lazy files two error reports. Origin capture would run twice; grouping still splits because the sources differ (crash vs error).
Scenario: Alpine x-init / click handler return video.play() on an element with no supported sources. Both window listeners fire with the same reason object. Neither path goes through logException, so ALREADY_CAUGHT is never set.
Fix: State the seam: tag at both browser providers (or in DetectionProviderBase.handleReportingRequest) with checkOrSetAlreadyCaught, and decide whether crash-vs-error of the same reason is one issue. Do not assume the existing logException dedup covers this.

Problem: Arm-on-first-failure still means the first (and often only) rejection of every non-rare measured API ships without a call site. §2's one-shot rows — HTMLImageElement.decode, FontFace.load, createImageBitmap, Body.json, addIceCandidate — are exactly the APIs whose first failure is the report that matters. The table still says “see breaker” (:288) / “guarded by the breaker” (:290) / denyHot (:299), which §4.4 claims to have replaced.
Impact: Implementing this gating as written leaves the measured stackless set unfixed except for the rare list (play, clipboard, …). A gallery img.decode() or a font load that fails once never gets a call site.
Scenario: Page calls new FontFace('x', 'url(/missing.woff)').load() once. The wrapper is a pass-through (capture off). The rejection is reported with name/message and no origin frames. There is no second call to arm.
Fix: Always capture for the measured-stackless set. Use arming only for hot rows that are not in §2. Delete leftover breaker/denyHot wording. One always / armed / off per row in a single table.
| Class | Methods | Where the loop comes from | Default |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Hot** (per frame / per chunk / per task) | `Scheduler.postTask`, `Scheduler.yield`; `FileSystemWritableFileStream.write/seek/truncate`; `GPUBuffer.mapAsync`, `GPUQueue.onSubmittedWorkDone`, `GPUDevice.popErrorScope`; `ImageCapture.grabFrame`, `ImageDecoder.decode`, `VideoFrame.copyTo`, `Video/AudioDecoder/Encoder.flush`; `OffscreenCanvas.convertToBlob`; `createImageBitmap` | frame-rate media/GPU pipelines, cooperative schedulers, chunked file writes | **off** (opt-in), except `createImageBitmap` which is on the measured-stackless list — see breaker |

Severity: P2 Medium
Problem:Body.json is still claimed by three policies, and createImageBitmap by two.
§2: Body.json is stackless on Firefox; createImageBitmap is stackless on both. Both are in the measured set that §7 / §4.4 would turn on.
This table: Body.* is off (opt-in); createImageBitmap is on the hot list “see breaker”, except it is also on the measured-stackless list.
Cost item 1 (:299): Blob/Body.* on denyHot.
Impact: An implementer cannot derive the options shape. Firefox response.json() of invalid JSON either stays frames: [] or every Response#arrayBuffer/text/json pays new Error() + an extra promise. createImageBitmap in a frame-rate loop either always captures or never captures the one undecodable frame that §2 measured.
Scenario: Chatty app calls response.json() per message (hot-in-bulk → off). One payload is invalid JSON. Firefox rejects stackless. Origin is not stored because the row was opted out — or it is stored because §2 defaulted it on. The spec currently says both.
Fix: One owner per method in one table: always / armed / off. Body.json cannot be both measured-default-on and denyHot.
“Released on settle” (:197, :205) is false for byReason. The origin (including target: this) stays reachable for as long as the application holds the rejection reason. For play() that pins the HTMLMediaElement — decoder, src, buffered media — until the app drops the DOMException.
Description is read at report time. Firefox's media error event fires after the rejection (:206). A report that runs on the rejection (unhandledrejection, logException in a .catch) still sees the pre-error element state. Holding the live element until a later report does not fix that; it just delays GC.
Impact: A page that keeps the last play() rejection for debugging (or that has a global unhandledrejection logger storing event.reason) retains every failed <video> for the life of that reference. The Firefox target description can still be empty/NETWORK_EMPTY on the report that needs it.
Scenario:await video.play() throws; Angular ErrorHandler / Vue errorHandler calls logException(err) and also console.error(err) into a ring buffer of recent errors. byReason.get(err).target === video keeps the element alive until the buffer evicts that error.
Fix: Snapshot describer fields in the rejection callback (tag/id, scrubbed currentSrc, networkState, readyState, error.code/message) and store those strings, not target. For Firefox, also snapshot from the capture-phase error listener (and sanitizeUrl the src). Drop target from the retained origin.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Severity: P2 Medium
Problem: This push edited this paragraph (and added the .cause bullet below it) and still does not name the describeError that the handled/adapter path actually uses.
Browser describeError (packages/browser/src/detection-providers.ts:28-37) returns { summary } with no description when !value.stack — correctly cited.
Adapters do not go through that function. Angular BugseeErrorHandler, Vue installBugseeErrorHandler, React reportReactError, Solid, SvelteKit all call reportError → logException (packages/web-adapter/src/adapter.ts). logException builds the description with packages/core/src/client.ts:171-184, which returns undefined when error.stack is missing and there is no .cause.
There is no captureException anywhere in the repo (removed in design v3).
enrichFrames fills crash.json frames. It does not fill request.json.description. Wiring only the enricher still ships an Angular await video.play() report with origin frames and a bare description.
Impact: The awaited/zone path this revision put in scope — Angular ErrorHandler, Vue errorHandler — is the path that uses client.tsdescribeError, not the browser provider.
Scenario: Angular + zone.js 0.14.10, await video.play() on a bad element. Zone delivers the DOMException to BugseeErrorHandler → logException. byReason hits, enrichFrames attaches origin frames, describeError sees stack === undefined and no cause, description is omitted.
Fix: Name client.ts:171-184 here. Same origin+target fallback as the browser provider, one helper. Drop captureException. reportReactError lives in packages/react/src/report.ts, not error-boundary.ts (:413).
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Severity: P2 Medium
Problem: This open question is leftover from the v2 two-mode design and now contradicts §4.1 / §10.
§4.1: a pristine then gives a native derived promise, unhandledrejection fires with the same reason, lookup by reason succeeds for bare and native await (Chromium and Firefox, measured). §10.1: zone chains never fire unhandledrejection, but NgZone.onError / ErrorHandler get the same reason, and lookup is by reason everywhere.
This bullet still says awaited chains under zone.js “cannot be located; they get the target description only.” An implementer who treats §8 as the residual-risk list will skip awaited/zone lookup and recreate the v2 P1.
Impact: The whole point of pristine-then + byReason was to locate Angular await video.play(). This line undoes that if it is read as current.
Scenario: Implementer copies §8 into a ticket (“awaited zone chains: target only”), wires enrichFrames only on the unhandledrejection provider, and Angular awaited play() ships frames: [] again.
Fix: Delete this bullet. If anything remains, it is the no-reaction fallback when no pristine then exists (:166-168), not the derived mode.
This push only changes §8 of the design doc. The wire-marker question is now decided: an optional origin: 'call' field on the frame, with a schema change and a drift test. It is still docs and scripts only. I read the full doc and both scripts. I did not run the probe or the bench.
New finding (inline, async-origin-capture.md:343)
P3 The decision is not reflected elsewhere in the doc:
§4.5 (:236) and plan step 7 (:340) still treat the protocol as an open question.
No plan step adds origin to CrashFrame, to toCrashFrame's allow-list, or to the schema and its drift test. That step has to land before the enricher in step 4.
The doc does not say whether origin: 'call' frames count for the grouping location, or what happens when a worker or viewer has not adopted the field yet.
Earlier findings: now addressed
The "wire marker is only an open question" finding is settled in principle. The leftover items are in the inline comment above.
Earlier findings: not fixed in this push (existing inline comments still apply, not repeated)
P2 Arm-on-first-failure has no mechanism. It skips the first and often only failure of the measured rows (decode, FontFace.load, createImageBitmap, Body.json, addIceCandidate). The table still says "see breaker" and mentions denyHot (:288-299).
P2Body.json and createImageBitmap each have more than one owner, so the default policy cannot be derived.
P2byReason holds target, which keeps the element alive for as long as the app holds the error. "Released on settle" is wrong for a reason-keyed store. The Firefox late error event also cannot be read at report time.
P2 Core describeError (client.ts:171-184) is not named in §4.5, and captureException does not exist. Angular, Vue and React reach logException through it. Zone's .rejection wrapper is not unwrapped.
P2 §8 :349 still says awaited zone.js chains cannot be located. That contradicts §4.1 and §10.
P2 The enricher's frames get no debug_id, because applyDebugIds runs before enrichFrames (crash.ts:202 vs :206).
P2 The enricher-level .cause walk (:244) is redundant with buildException's own recursion. fetch is not wrapped and already has frames.
P2 The "dedupe on reason identity" requirement for Alpine and Preact-iso has no seam. The browser providers do not call checkOrSetAlreadyCaught.
P2probe.mjs and bench.mjs still hard-code /Volumes/.... Biome reports 5 errors on them, so the lint gate is red.
Summary
Overall risk: Low. There is no behaviour change. The risk is that the design misleads the implementation.
Merge recommendation: Request changes to the doc. The lint failure on the two .mjs files blocks the merge regardless. The open P2s should be fixed in the text or recorded as open questions.
Most important to fix:
Always capture the measured-stackless set. Reconcile the table, cost-and-risk and §4.4 into one always/armed/off policy.
Snapshot the target description at rejection time. Name core describeError. Unwrap .rejection.
Add a schema step for origin: 'call' ahead of step 4, and state grouping behaviour and rollout order.
Delete the stale §8 zone.js bullet and the enricher .cause walk.
Make the scripts repo-relative and Biome-clean.
Positives:
Deciding origin: 'call' as an explicit optional field, rather than a marker frame name, is the cleaner contract.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Severity: P3 Low
Problem: The marker is decided here (origin: 'call'), but the rest of the doc has not caught up, and the decision leaves three things open.
Stale text. §4.5 (:236) still says "(§8, protocol question)", and plan step 7 (:340) still says "needs the protocol decision below". The decision is now made, so both read as unresolved.
No plan step lands the field. §7 steps 1–7 never add origin to CrashFrame (packages/core/src/crash.ts:12-30), to toCrashFrame's allow-list (:141-168), or to the crash.json schema or its drift test. Step 4 (the enricher) is where the tagged frames are produced, so the schema step has to come before it. Add it as its own step, and note that per the repo contract rules the spec is changed first.
Grouping behaviour is not stated.hidden is the only existing "not a real throw site" flag, and the worker skips hidden frames when it picks the grouping location (crash.ts:17-20). For a BGSVIEWER-14 report the origin frames are the only frames. The doc should say that origin: 'call' frames are eligible for the grouping location (or are not). It should also say that a worker or viewer that has not adopted the field treats them as ordinary frames, so rollout order cannot change grouping for existing issues unexpectedly.
Fix: Replace the two stale references with "see §8, decided", add a protocol/schema/drift-test step ahead of step 4, and add one sentence on grouping and on older consumers ignoring the field.
Docs only. HEAD 3022f870 vs last review (0af17f19). Unique delta is two lines in §8 deciding an optional frame field origin: 'call' (not a marker frame name), with a schema + drift test and viewer adoption. Checked that decision against CrashFrame / toCrashFrame (packages/core/src/crash.ts:12-29, 141-168) and StackFrame (packages/core/src/stack.ts:19-41). Did not re-run probe/bench/unit tests.
What this push fixes
The open protocol question is now a decision, and it is the right one: a viewer-only tag, not hidden, not a fake frame name. Grouping can keep using the frame as a normal location.
It is not fully specified as an implementation step. toCrashFrame is a closed allow-list and would drop the field; §4.5 and plan step 7 still talk as if the protocol is open.
Body.json / createImageBitmap still have three owners (denyHot / table off / measured on).
byReason still pins target (the <video>) until the app drops the exception.
Enricher-level .cause walk still cannot recover axios/ky/ofetch origin; buildException already recurses.
Alpine / Preact-iso “dedupe on reason identity” is not a property of the browser providers.
logExceptiondescribeError (client.ts:171-184) still unnamed; leftover captureException.
§8 still says awaited zone chains cannot be located (contradicts §4.1).
probe.mjs / bench.mjs still host-absolute; Biome 5 errors.
Overall risk: Medium
No runtime change. The protocol decision is sound. Implementing the rest of the doc as written still ships the same gaps as the last review.
Merge recommendation: Request changes
Name the CrashFrame / toCrashFrame / grouping contract next to the decision, and fix the still-open P2s (or record them as open questions) before this is the implementation spec.
Most important to fix
Carry origin: 'call' through StackFrame → toCrashFrame → CrashFrame; do not set hidden. Update §4.5 and plan step 7 (they still say the protocol is open).
Always capture the measured-stackless set; one always / armed / off per row.
Snapshot describer fields on reject; drop target from byReason.
Drop the enricher .cause walk; tag browser providers if Alpine must not double-report.
Name client.tsdescribeError; delete the §8 zone leftover.

Choosing an optional field over hidden or a synthetic marker name is the correct grouping-preserving call.

Severity: P2 Medium
Problem:origin: 'call' is the right decision, but the plan still does not put it on the wire path that actually serializes frames.
StackFrame (packages/core/src/stack.ts:19-41) has no origin.
CrashFrame (packages/core/src/crash.ts:12-29) has no origin.
toCrashFrame (crash.ts:141-168) is a closed allow-list: file/function/line/column/debugId/variables/context. A tag left only on the enricher's StackFrame is dropped, same as any other unknown field.
hidden is the only existing “not a real throw site” flag, and the worker skipshidden frames when picking the grouping location (crash.ts:17-20). If origin frames are also marked hidden, BGSVIEWER-14 is ungrouped again.
§4.5 (:236) still says “tagged … (§8, protocol question)”. Plan step 7 (:340) still says “needs the protocol decision below”. upload-contract.schema.json does not describe crash.json frame fields, so “the schema + a drift test” needs a named target (this repo’s CrashFrame vs the worker/specs schema).
Impact: An implementer who adds origin: 'call' on the enricher output and stops there ships frames the viewer cannot distinguish, which is the entire point of this commit. Grouping still works only if those frames stay visible and not hidden.
Scenario:asyncOriginEnricher returns [{ function: 'playClick', file: 'app.js', line: 40, origin: 'call' }]. buildException maps them through toCrashFrame. The uploaded crash.json frame has trace / user / data and no origin. The viewer has nothing to render distinctly.
Fix: Add origin?: 'call' to StackFrame and CrashFrame, copy it in toCrashFrame, and state that grouping treats these as ordinary location frames (must not set hidden). Point the drift test at the real schema. Update §4.5 and plan step 7 to cite this decision instead of “protocol question”.
Re-review of PR #175 (async origin capture design, BGSVIEWER-14), pushes 90b9cf7f and aad867c0
These two commits only change biome.json. They exclude docs/design/async-origin-capture from Biome. The doc is unchanged since 3022f870. I re-read the doc, both scripts and crash.ts. I could not run pnpm/biome here (pnpm: command not found), so I did not re-run lint or the probes.
Fixed by these commits
The Biome failures on probe.mjs and bench.mjs (format, noAsyncPromiseExecutor) should be gone, because the files are no longer linted. I could not confirm this locally. Please check the CI lint job.
The excluded directory has no other contents, so nothing else drops out of lint.
New finding (inline, async-origin-capture.md:154)
P2 The wrapper puts an SDK frame into stacks that are already well located. isUserFrame (crash.ts:183-190) recognises SDK frames only by /@bugsee/ in the path. In a bundled app the wrapper frame is app.min.js:…, so it counts as a user frame. For APIs that throw synchronously, and for rejections whose stack is built at call time, the wrapper becomes the first non-hidden frame. That changes the grouping location for reports that work today. §4.2 only trims the wrapper from the SDK's own origin Error, not from stacks the engine builds. The doc needs a way to hide or strip these frames, plus an e2e in a minified bundle.
Still open from earlier reviews (not repeated inline)
P2 Arm-on-first-failure has no trigger and drops the first failure of the measured rows. The table still says "see breaker" and denyHot.
P2Body.json and createImageBitmap each have more than one owner.
P2byReason keeps target (the element) alive for as long as the app holds the error. "Released on settle" is wrong for a reason-keyed store.
P2 Core describeError (client.ts:171-184) is not named. captureException does not exist.
P2 §8 line 349 still says awaited zone.js chains cannot be located. That contradicts §4.1.
P2 The enricher-level .cause walk duplicates buildException's own recursion.
P2debug_id is applied before enrichFrames (crash.ts:202 vs :206), so origin frames get none.
P2/P3 Decided origin: 'call':
It is not carried by the plan. CrashFrame and toCrashFrame (crash.ts:141-168) drop unknown fields, and no step adds the field and schema ahead of step 4.
§4.5 line 236 and step 7 line 340 still call the protocol an open question.
Grouping behaviour, and how an older worker or viewer treats the frames, are not stated. The frames must not be hidden.
P3probe.mjs:3 and bench.mjs:3 still hard-code /Volumes/..., so the measurements cannot be reproduced.
Summary
Overall risk: Low. There is no behaviour change. The risk is that the design misleads the implementation.
Merge recommendation: Merge as a design record only after the open P2s are fixed in the text or recorded as open questions. The lint blocker looks resolved, pending CI.
Most important to fix:
Specify how the wrapper's own frame is kept out of grouping for stacks the engine builds (new).
Always capture the measured-stackless set, and reconcile the table, cost-and-risk and §4.4 into one always/armed/off policy.
Snapshot the target description when the promise rejects instead of holding the element. Name core describeError.
Add a plan step for origin: 'call' in CrashFrame, toCrashFrame and the schema, with a drift test, before step 4.
Delete the stale §8 zone.js bullet and the enricher .cause walk.
Make the scripts repo-relative.
Positives:
Excluding the research probes from lint is a reasonable way to unblock CI.
Choosing an optional origin: 'call' field over hidden or a marker frame name keeps grouping intact.

Severity: P2 Medium
Problem: The wrapper puts an SDK frame inside the stacks of errors that are already well located, and the doc only strips it from the origin Error (§4.2).
§1 measured that platform APIs which reject synchronously (bad getUserMedia constraints, crypto.subtle.digest('bogus'), permissions.query(bogus), …) and fetch failures carry frames naming the call site. With the wrapper installed, original.apply(this, args) runs inside the wrapper, so for the sync-throw case, and for rejections whose stack is captured at call time, the engine-generated stack now has the wrapper (an SDK frame) between the native frame and the user's call. Error.captureStackTrace(holder, wrapper) in §4.2 only trims the holder created by the SDK. It cannot rewrite a stack the platform already built.
isUserFrame (packages/core/src/crash.ts:183-190) recognises SDK frames only by the substring /@bugsee/. In a bundled app the wrapper frame is app.min.js:1:N and is classified as user: true. Then:
The wrapper is the first non-hidden frame, so the grouping location changes from the user's call site to the SDK's wrapper.
That is the same for every call of every wrapped method. Unrelated issues (getUserMedia called from checkout vs. from the profile page) collapse into one group.
Existing issues, which group on the real call site today, regroup after the SDK upgrade.
This is also the one change in the plan that makes currently-working reports worse, not just fills in empty ones, so it needs an explicit answer before step 3.
Scenario: Bundled app calls navigator.mediaDevices.getUserMedia({}) from Checkout.tsx. Today exception.frames[0] is Checkout…. After enabling captureAsyncOrigins it is bugsee-bundle.js:1:48213 (wrapper).
Fix: State how wrapper frames are removed from engine-built stacks. Options: (a) also strip them in buildException using a recorded wrapper identity (e.g. frames whose function name is a reserved, un-minifiable marker such as __bugsee_wrap__, set via Object.defineProperty(fn, 'name', …), then marked hidden); (b) rethrow sync errors after trimming error.stack with Error.captureStackTrace(err, wrapper) where available. Add an e2e that asserts frames[0] of a sync-throwing wrapped API is unchanged with and without the wrapper installed, in a minified bundle.

Review: biome exclude for research probes (BGSVIEWER-14)
Docs + biome.json only. HEAD aad867c0 vs last review (3022f870). Two commits: exclude docs/design/async-origin-capture from biome, then format biome.json. I applied that config and ran biome check on the design doc and both .mjs files.
What this push fixes
The mjs Biome errors no longer fail pnpm lint — that part of the probe P2 is addressed. Excluding throwaway research scripts is a valid CI choice.
The pattern is too broad: biome also ignores docs/design/async-origin-capture.md (the spec). The host-absolute Playwright createRequire is unchanged, so the measured tables still cannot be reproduced from this checkout.
Prior P2s — still open
origin: 'call' is decided but would be dropped by toCrashFrame.
Arm-on-first-failure skips one-shot measured APIs; Body.json / createImageBitmap still have three owners.
byReason still pins target.
Enricher .cause walk still cannot recover axios/ky/ofetch origin.
Alpine / Preact-iso provider dedup is still not a property of the browser providers.
logExceptiondescribeError still unnamed; §8 still says awaited zone chains cannot be located.
Overall risk: Medium
No runtime change. CI lint is unblocked for the probes, at the cost of also dropping the spec from the format/lint gate. The implementation-spec gaps are unchanged.
Merge recommendation: Request changes
Narrow the ignore to the .mjs files (or docs/design/async-origin-capture/**) so the markdown spec stays in biome, and keep the remaining P2s in the doc (or as open questions).
Most important to fix
Ignore docs/design/async-origin-capture/** or *.mjs, not the path prefix that also matches the .md spec.
Carry origin: 'call' through StackFrame → toCrashFrame → CrashFrame; do not set hidden.
Always capture the measured-stackless set; one policy per row; snapshot target on reject.
Drop the enricher .cause walk; name client.tsdescribeError; delete the §8 zone leftover.
Positives
Excluding research probes from the lint gate is the right kind of fix once the scripts are acknowledged as throwaway. Formatting biome.json keeps that file itself from failing the formatter.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Severity: P2 Medium
Problem:!docs/design/async-origin-capture is a path-prefix ignore. Biome also skips the sibling spec docs/design/async-origin-capture.md, not just the probe directory.
Verified with this config: biome check docs/design/async-origin-capture.md → “No files were processed … These paths were provided but ignored: docs/design/async-origin-capture.md”. The same run ignored probe.mjs / bench.mjs, which is the intended part.
Impact: The 470-line implementation spec is no longer in pnpm lint (biome check .). Format drift or future edits to the design doc will not fail CI. The host-absolute Playwright path in both .mjs files is also unchanged, so the §2 / §4 tables still cannot be re-run from this checkout.
Scenario: A later edit wraps a line in the design doc past lineWidth: 100. CI lint stays green because the file is ignored. Meanwhile node docs/design/async-origin-capture/probe.mjs still throws MODULE_NOT_FOUND on any machine other than /Volumes/External2TB/....
Fix: Ignore only the probes, e.g. !docs/design/async-origin-capture/** if that does not match the .md, or !docs/design/async-origin-capture/*.mjs. Resolve Playwright from the repo (import.meta.url / workspace playwright) if these scripts are meant to back the measured tables.
Docs + measurement scripts + a lint ignore. No production behaviour change. HEAD aad867c0 vs last reviewed unique design (0af17f19 / protocol decision 3022f870). This push only excludes docs/design/async-origin-capture/ from Biome and formats biome.json.
Checked the protocol decision and remaining claims against packages/core/src/crash.ts (CrashFrame 12–29, toCrashFrame 141–168, buildException 201–206), packages/core/src/stack.ts (StackFrame 19–41), packages/core/src/client.ts (describeError 171–184, logException 1735), packages/browser/src/detection-providers.ts, packages/core/src/dedup.ts, and packages/protocol/upload-contract.schema.json (no crash-frame schema). Ran pnpm lint: exit 0 (the two .mjs files are ignored). Did not re-run probe.mjs / bench.mjs. Did not run unit tests.
What this push fixes
The CI lint gate is green. !docs/design/async-origin-capture matches how !samples / !packages/protocol/spec already work; I confirmed Biome ignores probe.mjs and bench.mjs. That was the merge-blocking half of the probe P2.
The host-absolute Playwright createRequire('/Volumes/External2TB/...') is unchanged, so the measured tables still cannot be re-run from this checkout.
Prior findings
P1 syntheticFrames / patched-then — still fully addressed.
P2 Biome lint / CI red — fully addressed by the ignore.
P2 probe path — partially addressed. Lint gone; scripts still not runnable here.
P2 origin: 'call' copy path — not addressed. The field is decided (right call: not hidden, not a marker name) but toCrashFrame would drop it, and §4.5 / plan step 7 still talk as if the protocol is open.
All other P2s from 0af17f19 — not addressed (arm-on-first-failure, Body.json owners, byReason pins target, .cause walk, Alpine/Preact-iso dedupe, describeError / leftover captureException, §8 zone leftover).
Overall risk: Medium
No runtime change. Implementing the doc as written would fix bare and awaited Chromium play() via byReason + enrichFrames, then drop origin: 'call' on the wire, skip one-shot decode / FontFace.load / createImageBitmap / Body.json, leak <video> nodes, and leave Angular logException descriptions empty.
Merge recommendation: Request changes
The lint ignore is fine. The design is still not an implementation spec until the remaining P2s are fixed in the text or recorded as open questions.
Most important to fix
Carry origin: 'call' through StackFrame → toCrashFrame → CrashFrame; do not set hidden. Point the “schema + drift test” at those TypeScript types (crash.json frames are not in upload-contract.schema.json). Update §4.5 and plan step 7.
Always capture the measured-stackless set; one always / armed / off per row; delete leftover “breaker” / denyHot wording.
Snapshot describer fields on reject; do not pin HTMLMediaElement in byReason.
Drop the enricher-level .cause walk (fetch is not wrapped; buildException already recurses). Tag the browser providers if Alpine / Preact-iso must not double-report.
Name client.tsdescribeError; there is no captureException. Delete the §8 leftover that says awaited zone chains cannot be located.
Repo-relative Playwright require so the probes that justify default-on can actually run.
Positives
Choosing an optional origin: 'call' over hidden or a synthetic marker name is the correct grouping-preserving call.
Ignoring research probes is consistent with !packages/protocol/spec and unblocks CI without touching production lint.
Pristine then + reason-keyed lookup still holds up as the wrapper shape for BGSVIEWER-14.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Severity: P2 Medium
Problem:origin: 'call' is decided, but the plan still does not put it on the wire, and grouping is unstated.
toCrashFrame (packages/core/src/crash.ts:141-168) copies a closed allow-list: trace, user, data.{source, member, line, column}, debug_id, variables, context. It does not copy unknown keys. StackFrame (packages/core/src/stack.ts:19-41) and CrashFrame (crash.ts:12-29) have no origin field. hidden is applied after conversion on CrashFrame (applyExceptionOptions), not via StackFrame.
“The schema gets the field plus a drift test” points at the wrong contract. packages/protocol/src/upload-contract.test.ts drifts FileType / request.json / environment — not crash.json frames. Those types live only in @bugsee/core. upload-contract.schema.json already has source.origin as a free string on request.json; following “the schema” literally would edit the wrong object.
For BGSVIEWER-14, parsed.length === 0, so the frames array is 100% origin frames. hidden is the only existing “not a real throw site” flag, and the worker skips those when picking the grouping location (crash.ts:17-20). Marking origin frames hidden restores empty grouping. The decision never says they must stay visible.
§4.5 (:236) still says “(§8, protocol question)” and plan step 7 (:340) still says “needs the protocol decision below”.
Impact: An implementer following this paragraph ships call-site frames with no viewer tag, or hides them and undoes grouping for the motivating report.
Scenario: Enricher sets origin: 'call' on StackFrame. toCrashFrame drops it. Viewer cannot tell a call-site frame from a thrown one. Or they also set hidden: true because that is the existing “not a throw site” flag; worker/crash/managed/common.py has no location.
Fix: Specify StackFrame.origin → toCrashFrame copies onto CrashFrame.origin. State that origin frames MUST NOT be hidden — they are the grouping location for stackless rejections. Put the TypeScript types (not upload-contract.schema.json) in a plan step ahead of the enricher. Replace the two stale “protocol is open” references.

Severity: P2 Medium
Problem: Arm-on-first-failure still means the first (and often only) rejection of every non-rare measured API ships without a call site. Observing that first rejection without attaching a reaction is still the §4.1 trap.
§2's one-shot rows — HTMLImageElement.decode, FontFace.load, RTCPeerConnection.addIceCandidate, createImageBitmap, Firefox Body.json — are not in the rare set (:219-220). The frequency table still says “see breaker” / “guarded by the breaker” (:288, :290).
Impact: The measured stackless failures that justified wrapping those APIs are the ones this gate drops.
Scenario: A gallery calls img.decode() once per image. The first (only) EncodingError is reported with name/message and no origin. The wrapper never arms.
Fix: Always capture the measured-stackless set. Use arm-on-first-failure only for rows that are hot and not in §2. Delete leftover breaker wording.
| Class | Methods | Where the loop comes from | Default |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Hot** (per frame / per chunk / per task) | `Scheduler.postTask`, `Scheduler.yield`; `FileSystemWritableFileStream.write/seek/truncate`; `GPUBuffer.mapAsync`, `GPUQueue.onSubmittedWorkDone`, `GPUDevice.popErrorScope`; `ImageCapture.grabFrame`, `ImageDecoder.decode`, `VideoFrame.copyTo`, `Video/AudioDecoder/Encoder.flush`; `OffscreenCanvas.convertToBlob`; `createImageBitmap` | frame-rate media/GPU pipelines, cooperative schedulers, chunked file writes | **off** (opt-in), except `createImageBitmap` which is on the measured-stackless list — see breaker |

Problem:Body.json is still claimed by three policies, and createImageBitmap by two.
§2: Body.json stackless on Firefox; createImageBitmap stackless on both — measured set, plan step 2 defaults ON.
This row: Body.*off (opt-in), including response.json() per request.
Cost/risk item 1 (:299): Blob/Body.* on denyHot.
Hot row (:288): createImageBitmap “on the measured-stackless list — see breaker”.
Impact: An implementer cannot derive the options shape. Firefox Response#json either stays frames: [] or every arrayBuffer/text/json pays new Error() + an extra promise.
Scenario: Chatty app calls response.json() per request. If measured-set ON wins, every success pays capture. If denyHot/table-off wins, the Firefox case that justified inclusion is unfixed.
Fix: One always / armed / off per row in one table. Pick an owner for Body.json and createImageBitmap and delete denyHot / “see breaker”.
Problem: “Released on settle” is false for byReason. byReason.set(r, origin) pins {error, target, method} — including the HTMLMediaElement — for as long as the app holds the exception, not until the promise settles.
Firefox's media error event fires after the rejection (:206-207). Reading error.code/message at report time can still be empty if the report is built on the rejection microtask.
Impact: Failed <video> nodes (decoded frames, pipelines) stay alive for the lifetime of a stored DOMException. A long-lived error object in app state is a leak of the media element, not 600 B.
Scenario: Player catches play() and keeps the DOMException on a store. The <video> cannot be GC'd. Repeat per item in a feed.
Fix: Snapshot describer fields in the reject handler (tag/id, scrubbed currentSrc, networkState, readyState, error.code/message) and store that snapshot. Do not put target in the WeakMap value. sanitizeUrl any src on the capture-phase listener.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Severity: P2 Medium
Problem: The handled/adapter path still does not name the describeError those adapters actually call, and it still names an API that does not exist.
Browser describeError (packages/browser/src/detection-providers.ts:28-40) returns { summary } with no description when !value.stack.
Core describeError (packages/core/src/client.ts:171-184) returns undefined when base === undefined && causes.length === 0. Angular BugseeErrorHandler, Vue, React reportReactError all go through logException, which uses this function (client.ts:1750).
There is no captureException in this repo.
Impact: Angular await video.play() can get origin frames on crash.json via enrichFrames and still ship an empty request.json.description.
Scenario: Zone.js delivers the DOMException to ErrorHandler → logException. crash.json is enriched; the report body has no stack/origin text.
Fix: Name client.ts:171-184 here. One helper for both describeErrors. Drop captureException. Unwrap zone .rejection when looking up by reason (wrapping is off by default since 0.14.2, but DISABLE_WRAPPING=false still delivers a new Error).

Severity: P2 Medium
Problem: Walking reason.cause cannot recover a call site for the libraries that motivated this bullet (axios 1.21.0, ky 2.2.0, ofetch 1.5.1, Mithril m.request).
§1 already measured fetch network failure as having frames and a named call site. fetch is never wrapped (:289). The interceptor (packages/capture/src/fetch-interceptor.ts) rethrows and stores no origin.
buildException already recurses .cause and runs enrichFrames on every level (crash.ts:216-220). A second walk in the enricher can attach origin frames twice if the predicate is ever loosened.
AxiosError / FetchError are JS Errors with stacks, so parsed.length === 0 is false and the enricher does not attach origin anyway. Axios XHR has no .cause (the doc already says so). React linkComponentStack (packages/react/src/report.ts:40-43) inserts a new Error as .cause — walking it must not treat that as a platform origin.
Impact: The identity-breaker “fix” does not attach origin to those HTTP wrappers, and a loosened parsed.length === 0 would stomp real stacks.
Fix: Drop the enricher-level .cause walk. Record axios-XHR / Mithril-new-Error / RTK as origin-lost. If a future wrap of fetch stores origin, buildException's existing cause loop is the seam.

Severity: P2 Medium
Problem: This open question is leftover from the v2 two-mode design and now contradicts §4.1 / §10.
§4.1: a pristine then gives a native derived promise, unhandledrejection fires with the same reason, lookup-by-reason succeeds for “Chromium and Firefox, bare and native await” (:165). §10 says no per-library path is needed given that. This bullet still says awaited zone.js chains “cannot be located; they get the target description only”.
The adjacent protocol bullet was updated in 3022f870; this one was not.
Impact: An implementer reading §8 after §4.1 will skip origin on await play() under zone.js — the Angular path that was the v2 P1.
Fix: Delete this bullet, or narrow it to the no-reaction fallback (no pristine then) only.

Problem: §10.4/§10.5 require “dedupe on reason identity” for Alpine (window error + unhandledrejection, same reason) and Preact-iso lazy (double unhandledrejection). Instance dedup today only runs in logException (packages/core/src/client.ts:1735 → checkOrSetAlreadyCaught). The browser providers (detection-providers.ts:121-154) never tag the reason.
Impact: Alpine return video.play() files crash + error for the same DOMException. Preact-iso lazy files two unhandledrejection reports.
Scenario: Alpine evaluator rethrows via setTimeout(throw)and the returned promise rejects. Two reports, two issues if grouping has no frames yet, or two events on the same issue once origin frames exist.

Problem:createRequire('/Volumes/External2TB/Projects/Bugsee/javascript/packages/instrumentation-tests/package.json') is still host-absolute (bench.mjs:3 is the same). This push excludes the directory from Biome (biome.json!docs/design/async-origin-capture), which I verified: pnpm lint now exits 0 and Biome reports the two files as ignored. That unblocks CI. It does not make the probes runnable.
Impact: The §2 table, the §4 overhead numbers, and all of §10.4 come from scripts that cannot be re-run from this checkout. Plan §5 is “this probe turned into assertions”.

Docs + research scripts only. HEAD aad867c0 vs last review (3022f870). Unique delta is biome.json excluding docs/design/async-origin-capture/ (90b9cf7f + format). I re-checked CrashFrame / toCrashFrame (packages/core/src/crash.ts:12-29, 141-168), StackFrame (packages/core/src/stack.ts:19-41), buildException + applyDebugIds (crash.ts:201-206), browser and core describeError, Angular originalError, and checkOrSetAlreadyCaught. pnpm exec biome check docs/design/async-origin-capture now processes 0 files. Did not re-run probe/bench or unit tests. CI on this SHA was still in progress at review time.
What this push fixes
The lint-gate half of the probe/Biome finding. Excluding the research directory matches !samples / !packages/protocol/spec. pnpm lint is no longer blocked by those scripts.
The host-absolute Playwright createRequire is unchanged. The design document is identical to 3022f870.
Remaining spec gaps (still ship-wrong if implemented as written)
origin: 'call' is decided but has no field on StackFrame / CrashFrame, and toCrashFrame is a closed allow-list that would drop it. §4.5 still says “protocol question”.
Arm-on-first-failure still skips the first (often only) rejection of the measured-stackless set.
Handled-path describeError is still the core one that returns undefined when !stack.
§8 leftover still says awaited zone chains cannot be located (contradicts §4.1).
Zone wrapping (DISABLE_WRAPPING…=false) still delivers a wrapper Error that BugseeErrorHandler does not unwrap.
New: origin frames injected by enrichFrames never get debug_id — applyDebugIds runs on parsed before the enricher.
Overall risk: Medium
No runtime change. The biome ignore is correct. Implementing the rest of the doc as written still ships the same gaps as the last review, plus unsymbolicated origin frames.
Merge recommendation: Request changes
Land the lint exclusion. Name the CrashFrame / toCrashFrame / applyDebugIds / grouping contract next to the origin: 'call' decision, and fix or explicitly open-question the remaining P2s before this is the implementation spec.
Most important to fix
Carry origin: 'call' through StackFrame → toCrashFrame → CrashFrame; do not set hidden. Run applyDebugIds on frames after the enricher. Update §4.5 (it still says the protocol is open).
Always capture the measured-stackless set; one always / armed / off per row.
Snapshot describer fields on reject; drop target from byReason.
Drop the enricher .cause walk; tag browser providers if Alpine must not double-report; unwrap zone .rejection on the Angular path.
Name client.tsdescribeError; delete the §8 zone leftover.
Repo-relative Playwright (lint is done).
Positives
Excluding the research probes from Biome is the right way to unblock CI. origin: 'call' (not hidden, not a marker name) is still the correct grouping-preserving choice.

Severity: P2 Medium
Problem:origin: 'call' is decided here, but the serialization path that would carry it still has no such field, and §4.5 still talks as if the protocol is open.
StackFrame (packages/core/src/stack.ts:19-41) has no origin.
CrashFrame (packages/core/src/crash.ts:12-29) has no origin.
toCrashFrame (crash.ts:141-168) is a closed allow-list (file / function / line / column / debugId / variables / context). A tag left only on the enricher's StackFrame is dropped.
hidden is the only existing “not a real throw site” flag, and the worker skipshidden frames when picking the grouping location (crash.ts:17-20). If origin frames are also marked hidden, BGSVIEWER-14 is ungrouped again.
§4.5 (line 236) still says “tagged … (§8, protocol question)”. Plan step 7 still says “needs the protocol decision below.”
Impact: Implementing this section as written either silently drops the marker (viewer cannot tell call-site from throw-site) or, if someone reuses hidden, undoes the grouping fix this feature exists for.
Scenario:video.play() rejects with a stackless NotSupportedError. The enricher returns one origin frame with origin: 'call'. toCrashFrame copies trace/user/data and the field is gone on the wire.
Fix: Add origin?: 'call' to StackFrame and CrashFrame, copy it in toCrashFrame, add it to whatever crash.json contract/drift test this repo uses, and rewrite §4.5 / plan step 7 to “DECIDED, not hidden.”
parsed = parseStack(error.stack) (empty for a stackless DOMException)
applyDebugIds(parsed, …) — no-op on []
frames = enrichFrames(error, parsed) — this is where origin frames are injected
frames.map(toCrashFrame)
That order is correct for the current node locals enricher (it mutates existing frames that already have debugId). It is wrong for an enricher that inserts frames. The origin Error is created at the app call site, so those frames are the ones that need the source-map join key.
Impact: BGSVIEWER-14 would ship a call-site frame against the bundled file URL with no debug_id. The worker cannot symbolicate it. The viewer shows a minified location — the opposite of “giving stackless rejections a call site.”
Scenario: Production bundle with injected _bugseeDebugIds. play() rejects, enricher returns the remembered new Error() frames. toCrashFrame copies file/line/column and leaves debug_id unset because frame.debugId was never stamped.
Fix: State that applyDebugIds must run on the enriched array (or inside the enricher after it parses the origin stack). Add a plan test: origin frames on an Error with empty .stack carry the same debug_id as a normal throw from that file. Also drop “protocol question” on this line — §8 already decided origin: 'call'.

Problem: Arm-on-first-failure still means the first (and often only) rejection of every non-rare measured API ships without a call site. §2's one-shot rows — HTMLImageElement.decode, FontFace.load, createImageBitmap, Body.json, addIceCandidate — are the APIs whose first failure is the report that matters. The table still says “see breaker” (line 288) / “guarded by the breaker” (line 290) / denyHot (line 299), which §4.4 claims to have replaced.
There is also no mechanism to observe “first rejection” without attaching a reaction, which §4.1 forbids. A pass-through wrapper that does not .then cannot see the failure; a wrapper that does is already in derived mode and might as well capture.
The wrapper is a pass-through. The NetworkError is stackless. The report has name/message and no origin. There is no second call to arm.
Fix: Always capture the measured-stackless set. Use arm-on-first-failure only for hot/bursty rows that are not in §2. Delete the leftover “breaker” wording.
| Class | Methods | Where the loop comes from | Default |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Hot** (per frame / per chunk / per task) | `Scheduler.postTask`, `Scheduler.yield`; `FileSystemWritableFileStream.write/seek/truncate`; `GPUBuffer.mapAsync`, `GPUQueue.onSubmittedWorkDone`, `GPUDevice.popErrorScope`; `ImageCapture.grabFrame`, `ImageDecoder.decode`, `VideoFrame.copyTo`, `Video/AudioDecoder/Encoder.flush`; `OffscreenCanvas.convertToBlob`; `createImageBitmap` | frame-rate media/GPU pipelines, cooperative schedulers, chunked file writes | **off** (opt-in), except `createImageBitmap` which is on the measured-stackless list — see breaker |

Cost item 1 (line 299): Blob/Body.* on denyHot.
Scenario: Chatty app calls response.json() per message. Implementer follows denyHot → Firefox stackless SyntaxError is unlocated. Implementer follows §2 → every successful arrayBuffer/text on Request/Response pays the capture cost this table exists to avoid.
Fix: One always / armed / off per row. Body.json (maybe text) either always-on and the rest of Body.* off, or off and dropped from the measured default set. Same for createImageBitmap.

Severity: P2 Medium
Problem: Two memory/timing claims about target are still wrong after the reason-keyed rewrite.
“Released on settle” (lines 197, 205) is false for byReason. The origin (including target: this) stays reachable for as long as the application holds the rejection reason. For play() that pins the HTMLMediaElement — decoder, src, buffered media — until the app drops the DOMException.
Description is read at report time. Firefox's media error event fires after the rejection (line 206). A report that runs on the rejection (unhandledrejection, logException in a .catch) still sees the pre-error element state. Holding the live element until a later report does not fix that; it just delays GC.
Impact: A page that keeps the last play() rejection on window.lastPlayError (devtools, retry UI) retains every media element the SDK wrapped. On Firefox the target description for the motivating BGSVIEWER-14 case is empty/NETWORK_EMPTY because the error event has not fired yet.
Scenario:video.play() rejects; app does e => { this.err = e; }. WeakMap keeps {error, target: video, method}. The <video> cannot be GC'd until this.err is cleared. Meanwhile the unhandledrejection provider already built a description from networkState = 0 / error = null.
Fix: Snapshot describer fields in the rejection callback (tag/id, scrubbed currentSrc, networkState, readyState, error.code/message) and store those strings. Do not retain target. For Firefox media, either wait one task for the error event or accept “call site only” on that engine.

Severity: P2 Medium
Origin capture would run twice; grouping still splits because the sources differ (crash vs error, or two issues).
Scenario: Alpine @click handler return this.$refs.v.play(). Media rejects. Alpine's evaluator .catch → setTimeout(throw) → window error. The returned promise is also unhandled → unhandledrejection. Two providers, two reports, same reason object, no ALREADY_CAUGHT symbol.
Fix: If double-report is in scope for this design, say the providers (not just logException) must checkOrSetAlreadyCaught on event.error / event.reason before submit. If it is out of scope, move it to §10.5 as a pre-existing gap and do not require “the SDK's dedupe.”

Problem: The handled/adapter path still does not name the describeError it actually uses.
There is no captureException anywhere on the public API (v3 renamed it to logException).
Impact: Plan step 4 as written updates the browser provider's description and crash.json, then every framework-caught play() rejection still uploads a report whose request.json.description is empty while crash.json has origin frames.
Scenario: Angular ErrorHandler receives a stackless NotSupportedError from await video.play(). BugseeErrorHandler → logException. buildCrashJson gets the enricher (if wired); describeError in client.ts sees stack === undefined and returns undefined. Notifications / issue list show name+message only.
Fix: Name packages/core/src/client.tsdescribeError in this bullet and in plan step 4. Same origin-frames + target-description fallback as the browser provider. Delete captureException.

This line tells the implementer not to.
Scenario: Angular + zone.js 0.14.10, await this.video.play() in a click handler. §4.1 says the reason is locatable. Implementer follows §8, stores nothing for awaited zone chains, report has target description only.
Fix: Delete this bullet. If some awaited path is still unlocated, name that path (and the measurement) instead of the old two-mode leftover.
| Bluebird | UMD replaces `window.Promise`; own untrusted event | `Bluebird.resolve(p)` handles `p`; its event carries the same reason, not `p` | lookup by reason |

Problem: This row is listed as handled by “pristine then”, but wrapping changes the object that reaches the Angular adapter, so reason-keyed lookup misses.
zone.js (current patchPromise): isDisableWrappingUncaughtPromiseRejection = global[symbol] !== false — wrapping is off by default since 0.14.2 (sample zone.js ~0.14.10). Setting the flag to falseenables wrapping. The wrapped value is a new Error (“Uncaught (in promise): …”) with .rejection = the original DOMException.
unhandledrejection is synthesised with reason: e.rejection (original) — lookup hits.
NgZone.onHandleError → ErrorHandler.handleError throws/receives the wrapper when wrapping is on.
BugseeErrorHandler unwraps only ngOriginalError (packages/angular/src/error.ts:22-32), which Angular 19+ does not set. It does not read .rejection.
§10's headline is “No per-library code path is needed, provided … origin is looked up by reason”. The reason that arrives on the adapter path is no longer the object byReason was keyed on.
Impact: The one zone configuration this table calls out as extra-handled still ships frames: [] on the Angular adapter path. Default 0.14.10 is fine; this row is not.
Scenario: App sets window.__zone_symbol__DISABLE_WRAPPING_UNCAUGHT_PROMISE_REJECTION = false, then await video.play() inside NgZone. BugseeErrorHandler reports the wrapper Error (which has a zone stack). Enricher sees parsed.length > 0 and does not attach origin. The original DOMException is only on .rejection.
Fix: Either document this flag as unsupported, or have the Angular unwrap also follow .rejection (and still look up by that object). Do not claim “pristine then” is sufficient extra handling for this row.

Problem:createRequire('/Volumes/External2TB/Projects/Bugsee/javascript/packages/instrumentation-tests/package.json') is still host-absolute (bench.mjs:3 is the same).
The Biome half of this finding is fixed on this push: biome.json now excludes docs/design/async-origin-capture/, and pnpm exec biome check docs/design/async-origin-capture processes 0 files. Lint is no longer a merge blocker.
Impact: Nobody else can reproduce the §2 / §4 tables this design treats as source of truth. Plan §5 is “this probe turned into assertions.”
Fix: Resolve Playwright from the repo (import.meta.url → packages/instrumentation-tests/package.json), and add a one-line “how to run” (including PW_firefox / PW_chromium) to the doc.

BGSVIEWER-14 is an unhandled
NotSupportedError: The element has no supported sources.with zero frames. Measured in headless Chromium 156 and Firefox 151 (docs/design/async-origin-capture/probe.mjs): platform promises that fail asynchronously reject with no stack in Chromium (and fewer in Firefox); user-codeErrorrejections already carry stacks, so the globalPromiseneeds no patching. The doc lists the measured stackless set, the 177 candidate methods fromlib.dom.d.ts, a generic call-site wrapper (with theunhandledrejection-preserving derived-promise trap), costs/risks, and a plan.WebKit was not measured (cached build mismatch).
