A11Y-13909: forward the Test Observability collector to the remote reporter - #1210
The Test Observability reporter (bin/testObservability/reporter) runs on the BrowserStack machine, from that machine's own install of this package, and bin/testObservability/helper/constants.js hard-codes the collector to https://collector-observability.browserstack.com. When the cli that created the build points at any other collector, the machine's per-test TestRunStarted / TestRunFinished events still go to prod, and the build's real collector never receives them.
Downstream on a staging environment: every test case in TestHub stays nameless (name, filename, cbt_platform NULL), and Accessibility, which keys test cases on those fields, collapses an entire spec into one page. A11Y-13909 was a 5-URL Cypress spec recording 1 of 5.
Change
constants.js: API_URL becomes process.env.BROWSERSTACK_TEST_OBSERVABILITY_API_URL || <prod default>, plus remoteReporterApiUrl() which prefers BROWSERSTACK_TEST_OBSERVABILITY_REMOTE_API_URL for cases where the machine cannot reach the cli's own collector (a private staging ingress, say). Read at call time, so no module reloads in tests.
utils.js#setSystemEnvs: forward that value as BROWSERSTACK_TEST_OBSERVABILITY_API_URL in system_env_vars — the same channel BS_TESTOPS_JWT and BS_TESTOPS_BUILD_HASHED_ID already travel on, which the machine writes into the Cypress process environment before the reporter loads.
With nothing set, the forwarded value is the prod default, so prod behaviour is unchanged. Three unit tests added in test/unit/bin/helpers/utils.js.
Validation
Run on a BrowserStack staging environment (rengg-regression-6-nov-25), 5-URL Cypress spec, Chrome 148 on OS X Monterey, this branch installed on the machine.
Before — TestHub test cases for the same spec:
name=NULL filename=NULL cbt_platform=NULL (x5)
Accessibility: 5 test cases, 1 distinct signature → 1 page reported. Report: Rule Type Check: FAILED — Missing: TYPE_B2, TYPE_C2.
After — same spec, same environment:
Full page scan [1] .../all/index.html e2e/scanURL.cy.js passed OS X,Monterey Chrome,148
Full page scan [2] .../all/typec.html e2e/scanURL.cy.js passed OS X,Monterey Chrome,148
Full page scan [3] .../typeB/cl.html e2e/scanURL.cy.js passed OS X,Monterey Chrome,148
Full page scan [4] .../typeB/cn.html e2e/scanURL.cy.js passed OS X,Monterey Chrome,148
Full page scan [5] .../all/typeA.html e2e/scanURL.cy.js passed OS X,Monterey Chrome,148
10 of 10 test cases named and attributed (5 tests + 5 after each hooks). Accessibility: 5 test cases, 5 distinct signatures. Report: Rule Type Check: All rule types detected (A, B1, B2, C1, C2, AI).
Unit tests: full suite run on this branch and on master; the 16 pre-existing failures are identical on both, and the 3 new tests pass.
Test observability supports configurable collector endpoints. The remote reporter endpoint takes precedence over the general endpoint; when neither is set, the default collector is used.
Configured endpoints must be valid HTTPS URLs with a hostname and no query or fragment. Trailing slashes are removed before the endpoint is forwarded.
The reporter that sends TestRunStarted/TestRunFinished runs on the BrowserStack machine from its own install of this package, which has the prod collector hard-coded. Against any other collector (staging environments) those events never arrive, so TestHub keeps nameless test cases and Accessibility collapses every test in a spec into one. Make API_URL overridable via BROWSERSTACK_TEST_OBSERVABILITY_API_URL and forward the launching cli's effective collector in system_env_vars, the same channel BS_TESTOPS_JWT already uses. Prod behaviour is unchanged.

On staging the collector the cli talks to is a private ingress the BrowserStack machine cannot reach, while the machine-facing public ingress is a different host. BROWSERSTACK_TEST_OBSERVABILITY_REMOTE_API_URL, when set, is what gets forwarded to the machine; otherwise the cli's own collector is forwarded as before. Read at call time so the tests need no module reloads.

Walkthrough
The test-observability reporter receives a URL selected from the remote override, the general API override, or the default collector URL. Configured override URLs must use HTTPS, include a hostname, and exclude queries and fragments. Unit tests cover URL selection, validation, and trailing-slash removal.
Changes: Observability URL forwarding
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Resolve and forward the reporter URL bin/testObservability/helper/constants.js, bin/helpers/utils.js, test/unit/bin/helpers/utils.js
remoteReporterApiUrl() selects the remote override, then the general API override, then the default URL. Configured URLs must use HTTPS, include a hostname, and exclude queries and fragments. setSystemEnvs forwards the selected URL as BROWSERSTACK_TEST_OBSERVABILITY_API_URL. Unit tests cover selection, validation, and trailing-slash removal.
The remote reporter's collector URL is now configurable and validated. Two small gaps remain. An override ending in a bare "?" or "#" slips past validation. Validation errors also echo the full URL, including any embedded credentials, into logs. Both are narrow and easy to fix, so the change is mergeable with these follow-ups.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to e7d01
Collector configuration now controls authenticated requests from the CLI and remote test reporter. HTTPS validation limits transport risks, but rejected configuration values can expose embedded secrets through logs and usage reporting.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · observed: The new collector configuration crosses into diagnostics without a secret-safe representation. Every validation error includes the complete supplied URL. A rejected remote override propagates through setSystemEnvs to console logging and, when enabled, usage reporting that writes the message locally and posts it externally. Credentials or tokens embedded in a rejected URL therefore leave their original environment-variable boundary. Accepted credential-bearing URLs also enter the existing full-environment debug output.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated exposure starts with control of the launching process's collector environment variables and reaches that run's console output and enabled usage-reporting sinks. Downstream impact depends on the authority of any embedded secret and who can read those sinks. The evidence does not establish anonymous configuration control, cross-tenant access, or fleet-wide compromise.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
observed — A remote override containing a query or fragment is rejected, but its complete value becomes the error message. setSystemEnvs lets the error propagate; the run-level catch logs it and passes err.message into usage reporting. That reporting path does not redact message, writes its payload to log/usage.log, and attempts an external POST when reporting proceeds. The validation-to-diagnostics exposure is introduced by this PR, even though those sinks already existed.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — HTTPS enforcement prevents an explicit plaintext collector override, and query/fragment rejection prevents those components from swallowing appended endpoint paths. Neither control sanitizes diagnostics. The console logger has no network transport; external error transmission occurs through the separate usage-reporting path, whose normal send operation returns when DISABLE_USAGE_REPORTING is the string true.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Keep raw collector values out of validation errors and environment debug output. Report the variable name and rejection reason instead, and either reject URL userinfo or redact it wherever configuration can enter diagnostics. This would preserve fail-closed endpoint validation without expanding secret visibility.

… tests
Review feedback on browserstack#1210. Collector requests carry BS_TESTOPS_JWT, so an http:// override would send it in cleartext: reject such a value instead of falling back to the default collector. The assignment moves out of the try block in setSystemEnvs because that block swallows errors, which would have turned the rejection into a silent fallback. Tests now clear both URL variables before each case and restore the originals after.

Request urls are built as `${API_URL}/${path}`, so an override carrying a query or fragment would swallow the endpoint path and the upload would hit / instead. Parse with URL, require an https protocol and a hostname, reject search and hash, and trim a trailing slash so paths are not doubled.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Reject empty query and fragment delimiters.
URL.search and URL.hash are empty for URLs ending in ? or #. These values pass validation, but the appended endpoint becomes a query or fragment instead of a path. Reject the delimiters or remove them before returning the URL. (url.spec.whatwg.org)

remoteReporterApiUrl() propagates these errors, and runs.js logs the caught error through a console transport without redaction. A credential-bearing URL can therefore appear in build logs. Apply the same change to the parse and HTTPS validation errors.
